You know, proper cowbell micing technique is of the utmost importance. One millimeter off in the wrong direction and the entire song is ruined. And I ALWAYS go with a Neumann U-87 in order to capture the full essence of the cowbell. The harmonics must be fully distinguished as well. Old-Skool snare micing: Shure SM-57 on top and a Shure SM-81 on the bottom. This is a mahogany snare so it’s a bit darker than your average snare. Very woody. Mic selection is the most important step in the recording process. I’ve got a great female vocalist coming in today that has a thickness in her lower-mid vocal range.
