Thoughts on Donāt Breathe
I'm ashamed to admit this, but recently I made a mistake. I went to see Don't Breathe. I was selfish and wanted to take my mind off the election and its dark apocalyptic visage. "This'll be fun," I told myself, "no one will get hurt." Boy was I wrong.
In the movie, the characters descend into a house where they don't belong, looking for cheap thrills and monetary reward. Much like the viewing audience, they get only misery and pain in return. While they can only stand so much torture and abuse before dying, so too can the audience only withstand so much torture porn. The characters are actually luckier than the audience in that they barely have names and lack all but the most stereotypical of backstories. Their motivations are vague at best; they almost certainly couldn't pass the turing test. They almost all die within 90 minutes, while we, on the other hand, must go on living with the knowledge of what we have seen for decades.

My favorite book passage
Walking Dead showrunner Scott M. Gimple tells Fresh Air producer Sam Briger watching the violence on the show and creating it are very different experiences:Ā
āWatching it is one thing and doing it is another. And even the most violent moments on this show ā even ⦠where Rick bites out the neck of that gentlemen ā itās a very strange thing because I know how hard it is to make that look real, and I know the work of everybody that went into it, and I know the people who worked on it. And so when Iām on set and itās 2 o'clock in the morning and Andy is biting into pieces of chicken of somebodyās throat and somebody is standing off to the side pumping the blood thatās coming out of that personās neck, and Iām thinking about the actor being freezing with the blood running down his shirt ā it isnāt getting desensitized to the violence, I see everything that went into it to make it horrifying and to make it hopefully emotionally resonant, but itās more like looking at a football play or a dance.
Iād say the hardest part is in script form because thatās before all of this work to make it real gets involved. There have definitely been times that Iāve been so deep in a script and writing these moments and sort of backing away from the screen and being a little uncomfortable or just horrified myself that it went that way.āĀ
