this scene has always made me think about the difference between harry and lupin regarding the death of james: while they talk about him and lily; lupin looks back, as if he were still tied to the past, while harry looks straight into the future. they chat on a bridge, as if it were the line that connects the past to the future. what do you think of this point of view?

It's a nice thought, and I do like the element of surprise it would have; a seemingly-creepy and off-putting kid being deemed a fit for the heroic house. But Snape's life would have been even worse if he were in Gryffindor; no place to run to and he'd be picked on the Sytherins on principle. He probably wouldn't have joined the Death Eaters, nor accepted by the "good." Lily would still want him, but she's only one.
