ATTENDANCE (3/25)
Hey y’all,
For attendance today, I want you to reblog this post using a GIF that describes how these online classes are making you feel. Here’s mine:
How to survive a breakup [boys edition]
In my previous post, I mentioned that I would be writing about overcoming what teenagers think is the most tragic and traumatic event they’ll ever go through- getting their heart broken. Adults commonly see teenage relationships as “puppy love” or just a high school relationship that’ll mean nothing in the future. While they may be true, The Conversation says otherwise. In their article, “Teenage heartbreak doesn’t just hurt, it can kill“, it is stated that break ups are the leading cause to suicide and substance abuse. For this post, I interviewed five guys and asked them what was the hardest thing they experienced through their tough times and what they did to move on. To the boys who are too embarrassed to talk to somebody about getting their feelings hurt, you’re not alone! Your homies in this post got you ;)
1.Thatrandomguywholikescookies
When asked the question, how did you get over your first heartbreak? Thatrandomguy replied that his answer should not be considered since he has only gotten his heart broken once. Whether it be five or only one, a heart break hurts nonetheless. He said, believe it or not, that he cried it all out. One of the biggest problems teenagers in a break up face, is letting go. So I asked how did crying help you let go? He explained that he just poured everything that was left inside of him out through tears. This made him feel lighter in a sense that he could finally start to move on without the suppressing feeling of sadness in his chest. This is a boy that has played three different sports, telling me that crying is the solution to break ups. To those struggling with the process of letting that special someone free, try getting out tissues and just have a good ole crying sesh.
2. Juan
I asked Juan what hurt the most for him during his breakup and he replied, “I think it was the fact that she was my best friend and partner at the same time, so I lost the person who held a lot of positions to me. Realizing what she was and having no one else there, well that ain’t it chief.” Sometimes you do not realize what you have till it’s gone. I then asked the question, “So, how did you overcome the feeling of losing someone of that importance?” He explained, “I think the best way to get over it isn’t to distract yourself by doing drugs or anything like that, but just to handle it head on. Let it in and get used it and just remember there was a time in life where you didn’t even know the person.” In high school, it’s not uncommon for teenagers to turn to drugs as a supplement to fill the void or relieve some of the pain. It might work for the time being, but after the affects wear off you’re right back where you started, maybe even worse. I do believe facing the fact that your significant other is gone and learning how to adapt to the feeling, is the logical solution.
3. _xweirdgid
Holding a grudge against your ex-significant other is usually the main reason why people can never get over a break up. _xweirdgid says that “Imma have to forgive that person then be honest with myself about how I feel and then I can finally do me.” In order to truly let go of that person, forgiveness is extremely necessary. Unforgiveness can cause problems in your future relationships causing you to get held back. You’ll never really be able to move on with another person if you have unfinished business with a past lover. Forgiveness is a decision not an emotion.
4. theweirdislandguy
Theweirdislandguy says the hardest thing for him was “seeing her with a new dude just broke my heart, how I’m not the one she’s with but someone better than me.” Boys, if she leaves you for another guy, let her. If she can’t see what a great person you are already, then she isn’t the one. Never let the thought that you weren’t enough take over your mind. You are enough, you always have been. The weirdislandguy said, “As a boy, getting over a heartbreak is very very tough. I may seem happy and alive on the outside, but deep down I am as broken as I could be. I listen to sad songs, I surround myself with friends who can help me cope with the situation, I work out to use that pain as motivation. And then eventually, after quite some time, I get over the person.” These methods are usually sought out by the majority of teenage boys.
5. Skuxx Guy [saved the best for last!]
When asked the question how do you deal with a broken heart, Skuxx Guy had a faultless answer. Skuxx Guy with a carefully thought reply explained, “For me it was Jesus, like for real, for real. I trusted in the Lord that he had a better plan and that it happened for a reason. It’s what helped me recover in a flash.” A relationship with Jesus is the only way that you’ll be able to fill the emptiness in yourself. He is perfectly capable of mending your heart and making it anew. Yes, hanging out with friends and having a good time may help, but I think your relationship with Christ is the only solution that’ll really be able to repair you mentally and emotionally.
If you are currently going through a breakup or have been for quite some time now, I hope that you are able to find peace within yourself through Christ and move on. Don’t worry girls, I haven’t forgot about you all. Stay tuned for next week’s blog, the girl’s edition!
@english128-3rdperiod @crazyenglishteacher684
I think one of my favorite parts about reading this heart break series is the fact that most of the students were all able to move on. It was also nice seeing how every person had their own type of way to get through it. From this, it gives perspective to us students that there are multiple ways we can get through our situations, and that we don’t have to follow a specific formula. We all go through things as teenagers, and, of course, heart break is going to be one of them. However, just like you said, we have to realize the fact that you’re going to be more than capable of moving on. It may be hard, but it won’t be impossible, and I really like how this blog page emphasizes that. Although we go through tough times in life, it’s never the end of the world. Other than that, I think this post was very well written and the interviews were great. Shots on the work, tokz.
What is the best way to treat acne?
Before I go on with my blog post, I would like to talk a little bit more about acne. Do you know what acne is? Acne is defined to be a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Wondering what hair follicles are? Hair follicles are the living part of the hair that contains cells and connective tissues. Acne, also, is a disorder that affects the skin’s oil glands. It is also known as pimples. I’ve seen so many people here on our island suffering from acne. Acne is the most common skin disorder of teenagers affecting about 85%. It does destroy one’s beauty leaving them to look displeasing. Acne often causes whiteheads, blackheads, pimples as I mentioned before and it usually appears on the forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders.
Maintaining a good and healthy skin care routine can prevent acne breakouts. Like I’ve mentioned in my previous blog post, make sure to wash your face twice a day with soap and water. Washing your skin especially your face and hands with water and soap daily can help lower the spread of coronavirus which is currently spreading all over the world today. So we must start a good skincare routine to protect ourselves from skin problems and diseases as well.
As Samoans, we need simple and affordable products to get rid of our acne. We barely have any products here on our island that can help us get rid of acne, pimples and blackouts. Therefore, I will share with you some home remedies of your choice that can treat acne below.
1: Baking Soda
Baking soda is a pleasing home remedy that can help a person get rid of acne/ pimples because it exfoliates the skin to remove excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. First, you must make a thick paste by mixing one teaspoon of baking soda with water or lemon juice or anything you want. Baking soda has plenty of uses. Using it to cure acne is one of it’s uses.
2: Oatmeal
Oatmeal is another remedy that can help cure acne. It is naturally soothing, and this simple oatmeal mask can help clear acne. Mix 2 teaspoons of oatmeal, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and add some enough water then can form a paste. Rub the paste all over your face and gently rub it in.
3:Simple Honey Mask
This mask is simple. Before applying this mask, make sure to rinse your face with warm water to open up pores. Then apply honey and leave it on the skin for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, rinse the honey off with warm water then rinse it again with cold water to close the pores.
4: Cucumber Face Mask
The cucumber face mask is a cooling, soothing face mask which will help smooth your skin, which can often feel rough from acne. Smash one cucumber, strain the water, add 1 tablespoon of sugar and mix well. Apply it to your face and leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash with cold water. ~Cook-Bolden.
I hope these have helped those of you with acne that needs to be cleared and has satisfied you enough. Those are some of the easiest home remedies I’ve found online that will help you get rid of your acne, pimples, pores and so forth. So instead of looking for expensive products that are nowhere to be found here on the island but online, trying those simple remedies, listed above can save you. Have a Blessed Weekend and stay safe<33.
I think it’s pretty great what you’re doing, which is educating us students about skin care. Honestly, I’ve never really given much thought into skin care, because I never deemed it as important for myself. I have had my shares of pimples and zits, but I guess it was never really a huge problem to me. For myself, it was the norm for teenagers to get a few pimples here and there, so it never really bothered me when I had. However, I’ve seen how acne, pimples, zits, blackheads, etc. can really take an effect on a student’s self-esteem. I know some teenagers who no longer take photos, or go out without their friends, or even look at themselves in the mirror anymore because of their acne. For some students, it really does damage their own self-esteem and how they view themselves. Therefore, I think your blogs are super important and can really help a student currently struggling with skin care. Great work uce
Top 3 Future Careers
My talents include singing, dancing, acting, being creative, and also being the best there is. I have always dreamt of becoming a professional and inspirational performer. I feel that I am perfectly fit to become a performer, I meet all the requirements and I’m very comfortable with entertaining. A performer is a person that entertains others with everything he/she has. I can sing in all four types of voices, my personal favorite is the soprano, alto, and tenor. I am known to be one of the most talented people in my family, church, and even in school. I’ve actually displayed my astonishing gifts to a few people, reason being is because I lack confidence and I feel that I am not good enough. Some of the students and teachers encouraged me to proceed the effort that I need to pursue my dreams. I am also known to be a great dancer, I’ve choreographed dances for our youth programs, MTV videos for my friends, public entertainment, and even class projects that deal with learning different cultures of foreign countries. With my capability, I am sure that I could bring glory to our school, and so can you.
Another career that I have in mind is to join the military in the Marine Corps Branch and become a healer. I want to be able to lose tons of weight and I feel that if I join the military, I would be able to do so. Since I am planning to attend college and further my education after high school, I think that it’s best that I do join the military. The military provides various benefits and opens numerous doors of substantial opportunities such as paying for my education, traveling for free, don’t have to pay income taxes, don’t have to pay medical fees, and so much more. I also wanna be U.S. combat medic soldier so that I can serve the country that has given me multiple privileges. I also want to be a part of the fight, the fight of freedom. Since ancient times, our glorious nation has and will always be superior. I guess I just want to be able to give back to our community for the many blessings that we have. But to be honest, the main reason why I want to be a Marine Corp Combat Medic Soldier is because they pay really good. Call me greedy or whatever but as we all know, money is how we survive this messed up world. With the money that I’d obtain, I’ll be able to provide for my family and that’s all that matters.
My last and most important career is to become a teacher, not many people realize it but teachers are the most essential figures in history. Teachers are defined as people who sacrifice their time to educate future generations to become productive and effective citizens within the community. Teachers are the reason why we see so many successful people in the world. Without the teachers hard work, dedication, and ambitions to see minors triumph in this world, there wouldn’t be any role models that we have now. I want to be a part of something that allows future generations to commit to excellency, strive for the best, and make this world a better place. I want these young kids to leave a mark of their great work and accomplishments. I want them to live their lives doing what they love to do. In oder to do so, I must first auspiciously complete school and acquire a Doctor’s Degree in Education. Then, maybe I could open up my own school to educate young minds to dream big, to think out of the box, to stand our from everyone else, to go beyond the limits, to become the best of the best.

This was definitely a colorful post. I say this because I feel like you creatively painted this huge picture of telling us readers what you want to be and why. I enjoyed how you expressed your feelings towards these jobs and didn’t hold back the truth. From reading your post, I believe you can accomplish whatever you want do in the future because the amount of confidence you have in yourself. Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right.” If you think you can do it, you can. Also, I think it’s really great you have a handful of ideas of what you want to be in the future. Majority of us students don’t even have a clue of what we want to do with our lives, but you sound like you got it all figured out. Great job on your post and I know you can do anything as long as you seek the Lord!
OVER HERE!
Here are ways to relieve stress from homework. There are many ways to relieve stress but here I’ve found the ways that I think are best to relieve stress. There’s only one way to find out if it’s true or not and that is to try it. Join me, and we can be stress free together, because who knows, you might need it for whatever reason why you’re stressing out.
Cry it out
Crying out may sound like something only a weak person would do but, it actually helps. There is this girl that I’ve talked to and she said that, what she does is cry her stress out, and fall asleep which helps her calm down. The thing is, is that she only cries when no one is around, she cries herself out secretly. Even another guy that I talked too, said the same thing. That is why it doesn’t matter if you are trying to put up a tough face, crying will make you stronger.
Exercise
Exercising actually helps many people relieve stress. That is because working out makes them bring out all the anger and the emotions kept inside. Sweating is one way to help focus and concentrate better. Running, and making your heart beat increase, helps calm down nerves and brings you back to reality. If you can’t cry your anger out, you might as well sweat it out. Try it every now and then when you are having trouble with anything.
Laugh (LOL)
Laughing is my all time favorite one. This is what I do all the time when I am struggling with something. It helps me be me again. Whenever I struggle with something I try my best to find a way to make it funny so that it would be less severe. For instance if I have piles of homework, like I l’ll be having for the break coming up, I make it fun/funny to learn about it. If I am lost, I would just laugh out of nowhere, because of me being lost. After laughing and telling my family, I would understand it next, and get back on track with finishing the assignments.
No matter what the case is, there will always be a way to overcome obstacles. Here is something that my little brother said for his project that other day, “No matter what kind of barrier it would be, “We”, the people will always be here to break it down.” That is just a little something that I would like to share about. Remember this, you are not alone. There are others in this world that are going through the same problems as you, and will have in the future. Whether it would be a 5 year old, a 10 year old, everyone will go through something different or the same as you. That is why you need to stay strong, so you can share your experience and help them cope with what they are going through. “We’re all in this together!”
@english128-3rdperiod
Especially with this whole “home school” thing going on right now, I think this post is great for what students are facing right now. I don’t know why but it’s as if several of our teachers have doubled the amount of work they usually give us. But no shade to our teachers though, because I know they’re all struggling in this as well. And you’re right, sometimes it can be extremely stressful and we’re all searching for ways to relieve that stress. This is where your post comes in to help our struggling students. For myself, I usually just find solace in the fridge by grabbing something to eat. In this way, I can distract myself from all the open tabs on the laptop telling me I have millions of assignments to turn in. But from reading your post, I know now that there are other options out there rather than stuffing your face. Additionally, I really like how you ended by saying we’re all in this together. Being at home nowadays, you tend to forget that there are all our other classmates going through the same thing. Great job on your post man!
Let go and let God
So in this week’s blog, I was going to talk about the various different challenges our high school students are currently undergoing. However, when I asked students around school this week of what struggles they were going through, I quickly realized a common thread throughout the students’ responses. As a result, I found that almost every single student was dealing with problems within their own families at home. Therefore, instead of writing of the multiple difficulties teens are facing today, I chose to close in on one specific topic. Family.
After realizing the prominent issue our youth today bears, I then asked the question of, “How do the issues you face within your family affect your own personal life?”
Jake Williamson. Student at THS.
“Growing up, you could say my home was always a full house. There were my parents, ton of siblings, and my cousins who also lived with me. But as I, being the youngest of the bunch, became older, everyone began to leave. One by one, every sibling and every cousin headed off to college. One day, all of sudden, I realized it was only me and parents left in the house. However, the house didn’t get quieter like I expected it to. It was then, when everyone was gone and the house was empty, it was then, I could hear the arguing and the yelling. I thought it was usual to have a few arguments, and that it was okay. But then, it was like everyday I came home, there was just always something that had to be bickered about. It got to the point where I barely went home anymore. Thankfully, for me, I had my cousins right next door. I basically lived with my cousins for one period of time. My uncle started calling me his son, and my all friends actually thought that that was real my home because they always saw me there. But as the years passed and I became older, I realized the actual situation. The times I actually went back home, it hit me that it wasn’t really arguing, because when arguing, you go back and forth. No, this wasn’t arguing. This was my dad always gunning for my mom. No matter what she did, she would constantly get blamed for everything. Even if it was something I did, my dad would still take it out on my mom. When I realized this, I moved back into my house. I felt like I needed to protect my mom. Every time my dad would yell, I would jump in and say something. I tried talking to my dad, but that made it even worst because he thought I was taking my mom’s side over his. I didn’t want to be angry at my dad because he was still my father and he still loved our family even though he had some issues to work through.
So how has this affected me? Honestly, because of this, it’s difficult for me to trust people. I never want to allow myself to open up to people because you never know who they really are. I keep a small circle being that I don’t want people seeing too much into my life at home. It’s as if, I continuously put up walls in order to keep people out.”
When hearing Jake’s story, I was actually concerned and asked if I should call the police or talk to an adult. However, he told me that things now at home are actually okay. He explained that, “Eventually, I was out of options and I didn’t know how to fix this ongoing problem between my parents. But then I remembered something I heard in church, ‘Sometimes, things will happen where it’ll seem like you can’t do anything. But you can always do something. You pray.’ So, I took it to my heavenly Father. I would ask Him to please work on my dad’s heart and to change my dad. It took awhile, but I actually began to see a change in my dad. He wasn’t always yelling at my mom and he would actually listen to what we have to say. I believe there’s still more to work on but he’s actually a lot better now and I owe it all to the Lord. We serve a God who hears our prayers.”
As Samoans, we all know the importance of family. However, we also know that family time isn’t always pretty. We all grow together and, at times, it does get tough. I, too, have had my share of rough patches with my own family. But, I believe what Jake said was absolutely true. When things spiral out of control, the only real answer is prayer. I know for myself, I always feel like when things happen I need to try and fix every situation. But, sometimes, things will happen that, even, we can’t fix. However, nothing is too impossible for God. So, let go and let God.
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26

Spiritual self care is not only about religion, though it could be, spiritual self care is taking the steps to know who we truly are. This is the real us, not a mask that we put on or a charade we play so that others will be pleased with us, this is who the person behind all that. It’s different from the way that we project “ourselves”, it’s deeper than our temporary gratification from soulless validation. If we practice spiritual self care we will tune into ourselves, and it will not only lead to greater inner peace, but it can help us develop and/or strengthen our standards and principles. There are easy steps in which you can start your spiritual self care journey.
Give Yourself Space:
A good way to start is to clear the space around you. You are constantly moving and changing the things around you, it’s time to take control of your space. You can’t connect with who you truly are in a cluttered area, take the time and do you right. An empty space will reflect an empty slate, start over and give yourself a little bit of that love you’ve been giving out. When your space is clean it will be easier for you to focus on other things. Clean your space, burn a candle, make it smell nice, and keep it clean.
Meditate:
Meditation is the easiest way to connect with yourself or something else spiritually. It might take awhile to get started, depending on your life or just your will to do it. When you are able to start and you do it everyday you will feel the peace within you build up and continue with you throughout the entire day. There are many benefits to meditation besides spiritual connection, but the most important one is that it reduces stress. Meditate everyday and watch the benefits unfold before you.
Journaling:
Journals are another way to self reflect and understand a deeper, more meaningful part of you. Writing helps you organize thoughts and actions and when you look back on your past writings it can also give you a bigger perspective on certain situations. Negative thoughts and emotions can cloud your mind and be self destructive writing and reflecting over them will help you realize this and help you overcome them. Remember to do what feels right for you, so if you wanna try a different type of journaling go ahead it’s all up to you. Try and keep a journal.
Forgiveness:
Don’t ruin your life by holding grudges and keeping things that are toxic to you. If you can’t forgive someone then that is on your head and you will have to deal with that. So much time and energy is wasted every day into holding hate in your heart for others, let go and let yourself grow. Hate will only stunt your growth and stop you from moving on and being happy. Be better than the people you hate and move on.
It is important to live in the moment and to not let a single second pass you by, and you can’t be doing that if you are wasting your seconds on someone who doesn’t deserve it. Don’t complicate your life and make it difficult, keep it simple. If what you’re doing doesn’t work then try something else, you’ll find your perfect plan in no time. This is your journey and as long as you are happy and satisfied then there is no right or wrong way. The most important thing you do is stay true to yourself, don’t compromise on you and don’t settle, you are worth every second of every day. So don’t waste time on people who don’t think so.

This was a really well done blog post. All these points are of significance and I fully support point number one, Give Yourself Space and the last point, Forgiveness. I believe giving yourself space is a must in human life. Whenever things happen, it always helps to just take a step back and be able to think about the whole situation that is at hand. Therefore, I think it was crucial to include this step. As for the last point, everything you mentioned about forgiveness was absolutely true. Holding grudges really will hold you back. Throughout life, I know so many who have said they’ll never forgive this specific person that hurt them. As a result, it really does show in them. All the unforgiveness usually conforms into toxic traits, just like you said. Shots on the great work, uce.
3 ways to be the best YOU
The you that’s had a rough week. The you that feels invisible. The you that has the audacity to doubt. The you that doesn’t know how much longer you can hold on. The you that blames yourself for everything that goes wrong in this cruel world. The you who wishes to be someone else when you’re already enough. yeah! that you.
Don’t worry about others, FOCUS ON YOU
- Don’t let other people’s opinions determine what kind of person you are. Let them judge you. Let whoever think whatever of you. Don’t let it bother you because they’re nothing compared to what you think of yourself. Create your own happiness. I’m sure everything will turn out just fine, trust me. You will not fall. You will rise. Don’t you doubt that even for a second.
Think Positive
- Learn to think positive because good things will happen. Your mind will believe everything you tell it. Positive thinking will improve your outlook of the future and can actually improve our overall happiness. A study at the University of North Carolina also showed that positive emotions are more likely to encourage people to plan ahead and think of actions they would like to take or activities they’d like to participate in the future. So take notes and be positive.
Believe in Yourself
- Above everything, please believe in yourself. Tell yourself that you’re strong, that you deserve to be appreciated, that you’re worthy, that you’re loved, that you’re brave, smart, beautiful, kind and that you’re ENOUGH. Bro you already have what it takes. I know you know who you are, but sometimes you forget it for a while. You are literally capable of anything. You are unique. It’s okay to fall on your feet because at the moment, you have the guts to get back up and keep moving forward. What more is there to say? Believe in yourself, you deserve it.
I hope your open to this. Stay tune for more ;)) thank you for your time.
Be you. Do you. For you.
I really like point 2, “Be positive,” because I believe in today’s world it’s very difficult to do so. Often, we avoid positive thinking being that we’ve been let down before or that we’re trying to think realistically, but after reading this blog post, it reminded me that it actually is important to think positively. The Bible also states in Proverbs 17:22, “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” So I do agree when you said that positivity can change your overall happiness. Great job on your blog and keep spreading the positivity bro!
Principal of THS: Room for improvement?
By reading this title, you probably already have a hint and know who this week’s blog is going to be about. But if you haven’t caught on yet, this week’s blog will be about Mrs. Tutuila Togilau, Tafuna High School’s very own principal.
I started out by interviewing several Tafuna High School students about their take on Mrs. Togilau. I asked very basic questions, however, the responses I received were, indeed, the opposite of basic. There were, of course, the pile of negative inputs, which I chose to omit, from the students. I decided not to insert all the unnecessary comments being made about her, for they were more “butthurt feelings” than actual valid arguments. I, also, made this decision being, the fact, that she is still our principal and deserves our respect, regardless of any issues. (1 Peter 2:17) With that being said, in today’s blog, I only selected the response that, I believe, was of significance and should be shared.
“Why do you think students find it difficult to respect Togilau as their principal?”, was the question given to James.
“I actually think it’s because of the decisions she makes on her own. For example, just yesterday, our JV boys basketball championship game was held at our gym. And because the crowd became a bit too rowdy during the game, she publicly announced on the bulletin that, due to “unacceptable behavior”, no Tafuna High School student was to show at the varsity boys championship game held at Samoana’s gym. Look, I know throwing a shoe on the court during the game was disrespectful, but come on man, what do you expect? There’s bound to be some type of misbehavior at a CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. But to make the decision, to keep all our fans from coming to our varsity game? It made us, as a team, feel as if she didn’t even care about us. And then, come to find out, that she made the decision on her own, and that most of the office was actually against the whole “forbidding kids from going” thing. It may seem unimportant to majority of the people who don’t play sports, but man, you guys don’t understand how, for some of us, this will probably be the highlight of our high school lives. It was just really discouraging to find that our own principal banned our students from showing up to the game, when Samoana’s players were actually excused from class periods today to prepare for the game. I don’t know, I guess, it’s hard to respect the things she cares for, when she’s doesn’t even respect the things we students care for.”
- James Williamson, THS student athlete
As a student athlete, I, myself, actually did realize, in my early months of high school, that Principal didn’t really care for our sports. But, I didn’t really take much thought into it, being that she is principal and she probably has more pressing matters to handle. However, after hearing James’ story, I have come to realize that this actually is an issue for some students. I’m pretty sure Togilau is not aware of how she made the boys feel after putting that in the bulletin. Thankfully, a large crown of students still showed to the game to support our varsity boys’ team.
Now, I didn’t write this blog to bash our principal or say she’s not doing her job well. On the contrary, I think she is a fine principal and has been doing her job for the past three years I’ve been at Tafuna High School. However, I do believe, just as the rest of us, there is always room for improvement. We have to understand that she is also human and just because she’s principal, that does not mean she is going to be perfect. So, in the years to come, I do hope she alters her behavior towards school sports.
PS I have been using fake names in all my blogs to shield these students’ real identity due to privacy purposes. So in all my future blogs, you will still be seeing the last name Williamson. It all just isn’t one family.
The Samoan Culture: A blessing or a Burden?
“...our family had no electricity and no running water for a month.”
In my previous blog, I stated that I was going to bring to the public the perspective of various Tafuna High School students. However, after hearing the heart wrenching story of 14 year old Jane, I believe it wouldn’t have been fair of me to not dedicate my first blog post to her.
One morning, Tafuna High School’s student, Jane Williamson had overheard her mother on the phone. She wasn’t paying close attention to the phone call, yet she could tell her mother was upset. Jane later found out that her mother’s family had called for, yet again, another family fa’alavelave. However this time, the family demanded Jane’s mother of, at least, $500. Her mother was compelled and felt as if she had no other choice but to scrape up every last penny of her paycheck to provide for their family fa’alavelaves.
Jane was one of six siblings with a single mom, being that she no longer had a father. If it wasn’t enough to split one paycheck to feed six children, keep up to date with monthly bills, and provide general necessities, Jane’s mother now had to struggle to supply a demand of $500. “Because of this particular family fa’alavelave, our house had no electricity and no running water for a month,” explained Jane. As a young student, Jane struggled to meet ends meet without these daily life necessities. Besides the fact of not being able to shower in your own home, Jane also mentioned how this catastrophe began to take its effect on her school work. Being that she no longer had access to WiFi, Jane was never able to complete a large amount of different assignments given to her by her teachers. “I couldn’t even afford to buy a poster board for a class project,” expressed Jane.
After listening to Jane’s account of her experience with our Samoan culture, it definitely raises the question of whether our culture is a real blessing or an actual burden. However, we see from her story that it was not, in fact, our Samoan culture pressuring Jane’s mother to sacrifice the excessive amount of $500, but it was her family.
Over the years, I believe our own Samoan people, including some of my own family members, have abused the ways of the fa’asamoa. Having the understanding of Jane’s situation, the Williamson’s family should have taken into consideration Jane’s mother’s inability to provide the $500. But no, they left her mother to struggle to find the money needed. Some would say that it was Jane’s mother’s fault and that she made a poor decision. However, Jane goes on to explain, although it may not have been the best decision, but her mom was only doing what she was taught was right.
So, to conclude my very first blog post, the Samoan culture is, most definitely, not a burden, but a blessing to us as an indigenous people. It is who we are. It is only how we mistakenly abuse our culture that turns our beautiful practices into a heavy burden.

Capturing Life through the Lenses of Tafuna High Students
In this blog, I will be going to post weekly interviews from real Tafuna High School students. What I plan to do is interview a handful of different and diverse students of all grades, genders, and ethnicities. Each week, I will have one topic/question related to my weekly themes. I will then ask multiple Tafuna High students, who will be named anonymously, what their views, beliefs, and thoughts are for this topic.
Through interviewing students each week, I will be able to offer readers a glimpse of what life looks like through the eyes of a Tafuna High School student. Whether it be their views on our culture, school system, or family values, students will be allowed to share freely their perspectives. There could be prominent issues that the youth, today, are facing that the world is not aware of. But what better way is there than to create an avenue for them to voice their concerns freely.
Anyways, stay tuned for more blogs about what life seems to look like through the scope of Tafuna High students!
