Is Sam too selfless?

I got a submission from the amazing @keiuolari​, who addressed the problem of whether Sam’s selflessness and self-sacrifice may be doing him more harm than good. This paragraph really hit home (full message and my rambling response under the cut):

[I]s there such a thing as being too accepting, too understanding and accommodating? Where’s that line, between giving unwavering support because you’re a strong, selfless, amazing person, and giving unwavering support because you’ve decided that you just don’t matter as much as your brother?

This is a very insightful; Sam is that enabler of the toxic personality (Dean). Since you went there and mentioned Gadreel; let’s talk about just how horrific that was shall we?

People seem to gloss over the fact that Dean helped an angel basically rape Sam’s soul; that is bad enough in and of itself; but Dean did this with full knowledge of just how damaging it could be. Not in some abstract sense; but after having watched Sam damn near die from angel possession in Season 6 from the aftereffects of Lucifer’s possession. That’s not even adding that Dean had seen what was left of Raphael’s original vessel. Dean for all his talk of saving his brother willingly tricked Sam into saying yes to Gadreel with full knowledge of the danger to Sam. That tells me that Sam’s well-being was the last thing on Dean’s mind when he did it.
