Publishers’ Binding Thursday
Today’s Publishers’ Binding Thursday post features four books from the Easy Growth in Reading series: Faraway Ports, The Story Road, Along the Way, and Today and Tomorrow. The series was published by John C. Winston Co. in various editions in the mid-1900s. John C. Winston Co. was founded in Philadelphia by, you guessed it, John C. Winston in 1884. The company started out printing photo albums and soon after focused on publishing the Bible in almost 600 different editions by the time Winston passed in 1920.
The company spent the next few decades focusing on publishing young adult books, including a science fiction series that is quite collectible. The Easy Growth in Reading series was created to help young people improve their reading skills, and features large text and stories about children. Several of the volumes also feature illustrated endpapers, shown here. The waving chicken and raccoon in the orange endpapers from The Story Road are our favorites!
