How We Present Ourselves

Disclaimer: This blog assumes most people here are queer in some fashion, both because many of these labels have queer-influenced origins, and it's the expected audience. However, you do not have to consider yourself queer to use them.

Over the course of history, many subcultures surrounding different styles of presentation have formed. However, when looking beyond masculine and feminine for labels to present oneself, the queer community at large seems to have forgotten this. Here, we fill that space which seems to have been left open.

Xenintation

Dandizine (Presentation)

Dandizine is a presentation centered around formal and aristocratic dress, tending toward either neutral or striking colors. Someone who presents this way may be called a dandy or dandizette, depending on preference.

As a presentation, dandizine is based on the dandy subculture and fashion. The carnation was chosen as it's a common flower to be found worn as a lapel pin, an accessory common to the style.

Dandies as a subculture are bohemian and romantic. Bohemian culture was centered around free love, frugality, simplicity, and egalitarianism. Romantic culture centered around artistic expression, imagination, and subjective experiences.

Like many subcultures, black participants had a major influence on its development and are the main practitioners today. The idea of the dandy also has origins in reactions to Romani people, as free-spirited people without care for social norms.

Rococoline (Presentation)

Rococoline is a presentation centered around lively, heavily decorated dresses, often with an emphasis on appearing cute. Color schemes tend toward pastels, darks, or deep colors, and outfits in this style often have an overarching theme.

As a presentation, rococoline is based on the lolita fashion and subculture. "Rococo" is a period of art in Europe which the lolita style takes inspiration from. Cherry blossoms were chosen to represent the fashion's Japanese origin.

Lolita fashion has always been associated with a childlike or doll-like appearance, and embraced the ideas of innocence, cuteness, playfulness, and childishness. A major inspiration for the movement was the book Alice in Wonderland, interpreted as a representation of the whimsy of childhood.

It's closely associated with and often considered a successor to dolly-kei, a Japanese style of fashion inspired by Victorian-era dolls. Dolly-kei has a larger focus on a vintage appearance rather than a cute one, though there is much overlap between the styles.

Androgynous (Presentation)

Androgynous is a presentation centered around neutral, simplistic clothing with added flair. The presentation takes most of its inspiration from masculine presentation, but trades some of its simplicity for the addition of a few eye-catching elements.

Feminine (Presentation)

Feminine is a presentation centered around ruffles, dresses, and softer colors. One of the "conformant" presentations, feminine can be applied broadly to many styles of presentation.

Masculine is a presentation centered around simple, practical clothing, and darker colors. One of the "conformant" presentations, masculine can be applied broadly to many styles of presentation.

This blog is still real!

I've been struggling with the design process for these flags, which is why there haven't been any posts. I want to make sure the flags have a consistent style so they can be easily identified, but doing that and making each one "feel" like the presentation in question has been a struggle.

Currently I'm testing ideas on masculine and feminine flags. Looking at other flags for examples, it really strikes me how they seem to try to match colors associated with male/female rather than the actual look of masculinity and femininity. It makes me wonder if people will be interested in my flags at all?

I've also been doing research on a bunch of the different presentations I plan to include. Most have been pretty simple to pin down, but some have much more complex histories.
