Max for Live (Introduction)
Max for live is a add on software package for Ableton Live 8. You purchase it from ableton.com and activate it through your account and then download the MAX software from cycling74. It installs Midi, Audio & Instrument devices with presets that you can then use with Live.
you can also try it out here and learn more about it.

In a nut shell it is a Modular object based (connect things together) programming GUI (graphical user interface) embedded into ableton live's API (it talks to the various functions behind the scenes of the ableton software) which gives you the tools to process, control and create most aspects of digital audio (try saying that 10x in a row)
It's very similar in a lot of ways to Native Instruments Reaktor but more geared towards advance multi-media control and in the case of Max for live, it gives you a second layer of effects, instruments and control that you can use directly in Ableton rather than running plugins.

It comes from a program called MAX/MSP which is kind of two programs in one. (it's like inception really) one of them MAX is kinda like the controls, buttons, scroll bars, messages, tempo ect...where MSP is the audio processing side which lets you mess with signal processing and effects and various other options. Max 6 is a stand alone application and I think if your going to get into actually making patches It's best to buy Max 6 so you can fully learn the program and then you can just upgrade to Max for Live after you get your head around it (which can take a while)
When you create a effect or instrument using Max for live you are making a max patch which you can then save to Ableton's library or you can also download many user created patches. There are 3 types (just like Ableton Live's devices) Max Instruments, Max Audio Effects and Max MIDI, some patches deal with Midi and Audio at the same time.
Max for Live & Max both have a pretty steep learning curve, It's not overly user friendly to the beginner but some of the user effects & instruments that are out there are really good and very usable for music production.
There is some really good documentation that can teach you how to put things together if you want to go down that road which you can read here. It gives you a full breakdown on the programming of a patch http://www.cycling74.com/docs/max5/vignettes/intro/docintro.html
but If you are new to Max for live it's best just to jump straight over to http://maxforlive.com/library/index.php?tag=all and browse through all these patches.
Is it worth it? well, yes ! considering the fun toys you can just throw straight into ableton live off the shelf it's worth the purchase, but as I mentioned before if you want to get into actually making your own instruments and effects it's best to by the full program.
