There is no universe where Bucky 'Yearner' Barnes is not staring lovingly at Sam's retreating back, and making sure he's sitting close enough that Sam's head can rest on his shoulder during long flights, and doing extra touches that he can pass off as Platonic

Bucky who cradles and nurtures his love for Sam for years without the other man knowing, without ever expecting it or thinking it would ever be reciprocated- wishing and hoping and wanting are different- and just watching from the sidelines as Sam finds and falls out of love again without himself ever going on dates or doing anything, going to Sam at the drop of a hat, staring at him adoringly and defending him to his last breath

Meanwhile Sam doesn't realize it until he almost loses Bucky, or he himself almost dies because then he sees Bucky's soft satisfaction and apology, or his crushing panic and grief and it slams into him all at once, like a cascade, like a fucking avalanche and he's buried under it and he can't breathe and the second he can he's screaming "I LOVE YOU" and jumping Bucky right then and there and-

Yeah. They are 'fell first' 'fell harder' to the highest degree and as much as I would love to reverse those tropes... mmmm
