The other day I was reading my D&D book and I started thinking about how Thorin would react to seeing a dragon walking around on two legs normally...

A SERIES NOW. First part of head-canon here. I was asked for glimpses of Fili&Kili’s part in this story, so there’s what we have. There was another side to Erebor’s swiftly growing prosperity and wealth – toughening laws and harsh punishments for insubordination, garrison state and dangerous alliances with those who were considered foes for hundreds of years. As one might expect, not all dwarves were content with that state of affairs, including former company of Thorin, as they could hardly recognize their king in his horrifying actions. At first they suspected it was the Durin’s curse, a gold lust, redoubled by Arkenstone, but even Thror never was so cruel and cunning. Somebody had to do something until the consequences of Thorin’s actions would become irreparable, even if it means to disobey direct orders and act behind the king’s back. It worked well until Fili had become a witness to something much worse than evidence of gold lust. Whatever it is he saw, the retribution was immediate – death sentence, but before the execution he spent several days down in the torture chambers where Bilbo interrogated him about other insurgents. Fili’s execution was the final straw that convinced Thorin’s company that their king is more than sick - he is possessed by something that needs to be stopped and if king’s death is what it takes to save him, then so be it.
