When clients ask me what they should have or buy to prepare for the makeup lessons, here are some basic items that I suggest that they should have… It is best to have tools to learn to use and take home so that you can practice! I can show you proper usage and techniques but without regular practice, all is moot.
So, without ado, here are beauty tools and makeup to help you elevate your skills:
1. Makeup brush set. It doesn’t have to be fancy but it would be great to have a full set. Here are some recommendations if you don’t have a set already.
Sephora Collection Deluxe Antibacterial Brush Set and the BH Cosmetics Pop Art Brush Set. I have both sets and LOVE them both.
Or, if you’re a fan of Target like I am check out these brushes.
Sonia Kashuk brushes are pretty great and so are the BH Cosmetics brushes... and I love that these are so affordable!
I recently splurged on these babies by Wayne Goss and I am in love. I need to collect them all!
If you think you have enough to do decent applications with, bring what you have!
I will also go over with you on how to maintain makeup brushes and how to keep them clean.
2. Eyeshadow palette… do you have any that you use already? If not, do you have any favorite colors? I highly recommend these palettes.

If you already have palettes, please do bring them. I love drugstore brands and palettes, too. (Such as NYX, ELF and other main stream brands like L'Oreal and Maybelline.) So many to choose from. Let me know if you need more specific recommendations.
3. Eyeliners, liquid preferably. These Marc Jacobs Magic Marc’ers have been tested by me and totally smudgeproof and transfer proof. Best liquid eyeliners ever. No hyperbole. I promise.
My other favorites are Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper and also the same formula in Ink Liner but felt tip. This is what I go through probably the most often. I use this one myself, every single day!
Love these Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayons… They are truly amazing, no joke (worth every penny). Love Blacquer and Brown(out) shades!
A great drugstore brand liquid eyeliner is the L’oreal Telescopic Precision Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. Amazeballs.
4. Primers… Eyeshadow primer is a daily staple, a must. Love Potion from Urban Decay or Nars Shadow Primer are my favorites. They keep eyeshadows on and prevents creasing.
Oily skin? Maybe you need to get a oil control mattifier such as the Murad one here. I also like the Cover FX Mattifying Primer With Anti-Acne Treatment.
5. Ok, and of course, you’d need your own foundatin, mascara, blush, etc. I’m assuming you already have a basic set? If not, let me know!
6. A setting spray is really important (if you want long lasting or if you get extremely oily). I use professional brands for this but you can buy one from Urban Decay here.
