i've seen people clowning on the "therapy speak" aspect of the wildehopps confession, and trust me, as someone who really loathes therapy speak in media, this is not a case of that.

one defense i haven't seen made to these people (and now i am gifting to all of you) is like. this is obviously a callback to the very beginning of the film. you know, the beginning where they're incapable of communicating with each other so they're forced into partners therapy. where the therapist calls them out on this. with therapy speak.

and then the whole movie is a series of problems that keep happening because they still can't communicate with each other.

the part of the confession scene w the "therapy speak" is a humorous callback to the very beginning of the film, because only now are they able to be open and communicative with each other. it's supposed to be awkward but endearing. the dialogue is supposed to be unnatural; they are literally taking the accusations the therapist threw at them and are finally admitting to it.

therapy speak where the characters inexplicably know how to talk about their emotions with the proper terminology is excessively sanitized and boring. zootopia 2 does not do this. if anything, it is subverting this.

Hang on, are people actually missing that it was a callback? Their therapy session was like 36 hours prior to the confession and they didn’t sleep at all, of COURSE they’re calling it back and it was perfectly awkward and perfectly communicated. They even put them BACK in therapy at the end to drive the point home. Are people this media illiterate??

I think the thing about it for me is, like. I think there's something to be said for, like, characters who have been therapized and who use the language and methodology in their everyday life -- I think Kaidan Alenko from BioWare's Mass Effect series is actually probably a good example of this. But this has an in-universe basis as someone who experienced fucked up things, struggled to cope on his own, and went and got help for that.

Rook’s languaging at times really does fit a therapist being in a session, with things that a therapist would say to a client at times. I do think there's something to be said for doing your homework to create dialogue for the type of character and dynamic you want to create, but the problem is that when it feels perfect, it doesn't strike me as real. I also think we spent a little too much time with characters who were actively processing emotions versus just emoting.

For the most part we're not getting them at their rawest and unfiltered, and there's a level of performativeness to it that just doesn't feel like these are real people saying real things as their world collapsed around them. The dichotomy between the self-awareness to therapize and multiple, on-going, apocalyptic events is incongruous at best, and poorly integrated into the storyworld at worst.

there's a saying i always think of: the best lies always have a little bit of truth to them. and boy does that apply to nick whenever he's playing up a character. his scam where he pretends to be a gentle father in the first movie? the little bit of truth is that despite his mask of nonchalance, he IS gentle and caring deep down. pretending to be a couple with judy in the second movie? the little bit of truth is that he DOES see her as his chosen 'pack'.

the characterization in these films is done so well. nick in particular is very easy for us, the audience, to read despite how much he haaaates being vulnerable. his actions are very loud. i'm always glad to see competent and well thought out writing like this in mainstream media.

incoherent rambling, but one take i LOVE on the kaidan and shepard dynamic (notably during me2 and the time skip between it and me3) is seeing shepard's refusal to reach out as a way to protect kaidan.

for a shepard who sucks at communicating, and fucked up by getting defensive on horizon, it makes sense for them to reflect on the situation and feel even more hopeless.

like, why did this have to happen to them? why couldn't they have stayed dead...? at this point, plausible deniability is gone. shep's too tied in. they couldn't leave, not without consequence. because if they did, they couldn't stop the collectors. cerberus would be left to their own devices. it'd be a mess.

esp since shep now knows the alliance, despite the red tape, WAS working to help the colonies. they also know that the illusive man was not only spreading rumors about shepard, but was also the one behind horizon in the first place. they're trapped. going to the alliance would involve months of trial and reprimanding. the council also doesn't trust them. this is time that can't be wasted as more and more people die.

and shep can’t drag kaidan down with them. they don't even know if they're real or not or if miranda DID put that chip in or not. cerberus is confirmed to have outright lied to them, at the very least. what if they pulled a saren on shep. and they're a sleeper agent . a ticking time bomb.

is it still shepard in there? is it still them? even if not, maybe they were given this extra time to stop the collectors, save the colonies, land a hit on cerberus on the way out, and then die for good.

so shep ices kaidan out to keep him away from the suicide mission and from cerberus. this is to keep him safe. though unfortunately this keeps kaidan distrustful since shep refuses to reach out about their own concerns, or even prove anything. maybe this is for the best. if he knew the truth, and if he knew their doubts and fears and how they wanted to rejoin the alliance….. shep didn’t want him to get tangled up in their business again, like on horizon when he was actively made bait for them.

more thoughts. this still applies during the time skip between me2 and me3! shep is under house arrest and is accused of colluding with cerberus AND causing the deaths of thousands of batarians. without context, this is like. career ending shit. yet another reason why shepard wouldn't want to get kaidan tangled up in all of this.

and then they speak in person for the first time in several months. and they smile at each other. a flicker of hope? then hell breaks loose.

Too shy to add directly to your post, but this has always been my interpretation of the Shenko dynamic in ME2! There's a trope I've seen a few times that always makes me emotional when done right: acting cold to *ensure* your loved one stays away. To ensure they don't miss you when you're gone and to keep them safe. It's like ripping the bandaid off for their "own good". Which is something that, in Shepards position, is the only thing they think they can ensure. But of course, in the grand scheme of things, this only makes Kaidan distrustful and confused. But it is delicious angst! ;)

preface that i'm not usually huge on contrived miscommunication issues in fiction, but like with my og post, this would be one of the exceptions 100%. because shep wants to communicate. but communication is something that could easily be used against them or kaidan! it's too dangerous!!

i always think abt how kelly probes and pokes about shep's relationship w kaidan following horizon, regardless if you're romanced or not. and asks how much he means to them.

any info kelly collects is most definitely sent to tim. if i were shepard, this would be the moment i realize that it's too late. i can't reach out to kaidan anymore. i can't openly apologize and explain everything. it's too dangerous. i might not be able to escape unscathed ..but maybe he can.

if kaidan ever got the full picture, he would try to do something about it. he would try to help. and that cannot happen.

that would be when i look at kelly, lie, and say he means nothing to me.

like none of this was fanfic. or headcanon. it was all in the canon trilogy, platonic or not.
