Superman 2025 analysis
500 words — made after watching
Superman (2025) is about humanity, love, and family. From the very beginning, Superman, all of the people of Metropolis, and Jarhanpur’s citizens are all in bright lighting. This use of cinematic lighting shows the overwhelming positives of humanity.
This bright coloring and almost blinding lighting project a sense of hope, most clearly seen when Superman saves a woman from a tower toppling over her. Even when his name is tarnished and he is hated, Superman does not let the death of someone pass by. This light follows Luthor as well.
Despite the negative framing of Luthor, he is still shown some light, even if it's dimmed. His pocket universes are dim, shallow, and lonely. The dark lightning allows the viewers to feel a sense of loneliness when these scenes appear. Luthor himself is a sad man, engulfed by envy. Despite it all, Superman does not try to kill him. Instead, he tries to talk to him, even if it’s futile. Because no one deserves to die, they all have a sense of humanity. They all live, laugh, and love the same. Even if Luthor’s world is desolate and lonely, he is still human.
Just like Luthor, the people of Jarhanpur are just as human and do not deserve any casualties. They too live and love, they have families just as the people of Metropolis and Lexcorp. Just for living the life they just so happened to have, they are patronized to make a profit. Exploitation of any kind is not deserved, no matter the context. Innocent people—such as the street vendor and the ones in the pocket universe—are put at risk for the use of personal gain and exploitation. This is what Superman tries his hardest to stop. He wants to be able to protect the innocent from the horrors of war. A war that should not be happening in the first place.
Even with all the backlash Superman gets, the film is never filmed depressingly. When people throw things at Superman, the light never goes away; he does not let this kill his humanity. He tries his best not to let it get to him, and even when it does, he does not stop believing he has humanity in him or that humanity should be protected. Even in the pocket universes, there is some sort of light. It is never fully dark, never is the film shown to have given up that light—that hope—in any way.
The movie Superman (2025) is the light in the dark; that no matter how bad it gets, there is someone or something for you. Clark Kent had his family and friends behind him; there will be something for you as well. No matter what is thrown your way, you can overcome as long as you have hope and do not let go of what is important to you. That is what Superman is about: your ability to have hope in yourself and others, and how you overcome the challenges life has in store.
