Mandragora Chapter 16 Preview

Happy Saturday! Here’s a quick look at next week’s chapter. This one is a bit more Caleb centric!

Caleb only knew hunger.

It was his curse, to starve, to feed, but never be fully satisfied. It was the cost of his immortality—blood for strength. He was a killer, a beast, and endlessly selfish, filled to the brim with avarice. The fact of this threatened to eat him alive every day for over the past century, his guilt close to swallowing him whole. He had pushed it down—suppressing it for most of his very long and wretched life.

That feeling was gone now.

The taste of iron was sweet on his lips. It was refreshing to have an actual drink—plasma fruit did him well, but it paled in comparison to the real thing. Actual blood, from a warm body with a beating heart, would actually sate him for some time. He was so completely lost in the taste of it, in satisfying his endless hunger that he couldn’t even feel sorry for whatever poor soul was in his grasp. The guilt could come later—for now, he would feed.

Once his hunger was sated, he pulled away with a sigh. He caught his breath as he licked his lips. Bright red cascaded down the flesh in front of him, trickling along the throat of his unlucky victim. Still in the throes of his blood-lust, he leaned down and lapped it up, dragging his tongue up the length of his victim’s neck. This had been his finest meal in years—he couldn’t let any of it go to waste. He continued his clean-up, licking up the rest until he found himself nestling his nose into red hair.

Caleb’s stomach turned to lead.
