I really don't get the people who claim there's no evidence to support the theory that Eraserhead is a metaphor for parents that have a disabled child and can't/won't care for it. Because 1) I would argue that being an infant is about as disabled as one can get because you are totally reliant on those around you, and 2) David Lynch has a history of portraying disability as something otherworldly and supernatural. In twin peaks, the man with one arm, the man from another place, and the giant all have physical disabilities and they're also spirits from the black lodge. In Wild at Heart, Lula's PTSD from her assault as a child gives her semi-psychic abilities. The same with Laura Palmer's mother. Why is it so impossible to imagine that the Eraserhead baby is a similar metaphor/plot device?

I watched it earlier because I love that baby.#literally could not be more clear that it's about parents not wanting to raise a disabled child #it's not even subtext it's just the plot ??#people just seethe when any fictional story has themes of disability this always happens :/#but yeah. you're literally right that's literally just the plot of the movie #like. before henry was alone with the baby he did NOTHING to help his wife take care of them #only AFTER he was forced to did he do literally any caretaking #AND THE CHICKEN HER FAMILY WAS EATING!! her dad said they were created and not grown #I don't have any deep analysis of eraserhead rn bc it's so fresh in my mind and I haven't unraveled everything yet but.#the chicken thing came off as really similar to thalidomide which caused lots of babies to be born deformed and disabled #I could keep going on but it'd be really sad. anyway you're so right #it's literally just the plot of the movie idk how people could argue against it outside of deliberate ignorance #or just really poor reading comprehension
