A New York state of mind
Jim double-checked to make sure the note with his appointment to return to Planet Pepper to pick up his new outfit was safely in his wallet, then headed out to 39th Street and turned toward 8th Ave so he could catch a bus to the Port Authority terminal at 42nd Street.
Before SHIELD came crashing down, he would have been happy that he’d left his Mack in Weehawken, where this trip’s turnaround was, but now, over a month since that day, he was getting suspicious looks from everyone he passed, including enough of the police officers that he found himself scanning for doorways he could duck into if anyone started stirring up trouble.
In fact, he was focusing so much on where to duck to avoid trouble, his first clue that he wasn’t watching where he was going closely enough was when he felt someone bounce off him and stagger back a few steps.
“Oh! I’m sorry.” Jim offered a hand to grab for support. “Are you OK? Can I help?”
The little girl squeaked, bouncing onto her rear and whining softly as she rubbed her sore behind. “Owwwieeeeeee.” the whine sounded strangely robitic as she stood up. Her hat had come off, revealing two black kitten ears as she looked up. “That hurted.”
Jim blushed and got down on one knee so he could rescue the little girl’s hat. As he offered it to her, he said gently, “I’m sorry, miss. Can I do anything to help? Do you have a big brother or big sister I should look for for you? This isn’t a safe place for a little girl to be running around by herself.”
The little neko nodded, taking her hat back and holding it in her hands as she sniffed his hand. “You smell funny, but a good funny.” She determined at long last, rubbing her cheek against his hand and purring. “We friends now?”
A boy with a baseball cap, some black jeans and an orange shirt ran up, picking up the little girl and setting her on his shoulders. “Sorry about that sir, she slipped out of her harness before i even noticed.” He smiled sheepishly, holding a bright pink back pack with a harness attached to it. “She likes to run off whenever she thinks I’m not paying attention, and with a city like this she also enjoys climbing onto roof tops.”
“Meanie big brother.” The girl pouted, reaching over to try and get to Jim. “I wanna play!” She pouted, looking at him with a face so adorable that only a dead man could resist… Or her older brother.
“Nina, stop trying to cuteify people.”
Jim chuckled, then smiled as the little one rubbed her face against his hand, just like a cat. “As long as you don’t try to claim me from MY little girl,” he teased playfully. “She’ll share, but she won’t let anyone take her Daddy.”
When the big brother ran up, holding the pink harness, Jim had to laugh. “Trust me, I understand. My little girl used to do the same thing to me, before she got too big to be able to run off like that. Now, she stays home with my husband, and they help take care of her Uncle Ted. So what brings the two of you to the big city?” He carefully plucked the hat from the little girl’s hands and set it on her head. “You might want to hide these, sweetie. Humans don’t generally like anyone who’s different from them.”
At the big brother’s warning, Jim broke into laughter. “Don’t worry. Bindi’s been giving me the Big Eyes since she was a toddler. I’m pretty resistant by now.” He held out a hand and smiled. “I’m Jim. Jim Cole. I’m up Florida with a contract from Stark Tower. What brings the two of you here?”
“Tomas Levesque, and this is Nina, my baby sister.” He smiled, shaking his hand with a firm grasp. “And trust me, if she put her power behind it you would fall for it. She got the Hulk to actually give her a piggy back ride. Not kidding either.” He sighed, rubbing his forehead as Nina giggled.
“Green giant fun! He likes climbing like I do!” She giggled, rubbing her cheeks with her fists cutely.
“Green giant also tried to beat me to the ground.” Tomas reminded. “Most of the time she is pretty good about the harness unless we go by the park, something has her riled up and I’m positive it wasn’t candy. As for why we are here, we just wander from place to place and avoid being killed. Or worse yet.” he shivered, tightly gripping Nina’s ankles. “Being tamed like a couple of house cats. It almost happened once, but never again.” Tomas seemed more than a little uncomfortable about the topic, instead looking at the man before him. “And a job. I take on what jobs i can but they don’t usually last very long. No one wants a cat boy working for them.” He sighed softly.
Jim laughed. “That’s not such a surprise, from what I hear. He’s supposed to be a sucker for kittens. I heard rumors the Avengers keep a pack of kittens for him to cuddle when he’s big and green and they need him to not be.”
He studied the two children thoughtfully. “No family? HYDRA? SHIELD? Or someone else? Oh yes, and are either of you subject to being easily frightened?” He nodded to himself, then continued. “I’m asking because one of my friends is very sensitive to other people’s emotions, and fear is actually painful to him. It causes him so much pain that he can’t think clearly until he makes the fear go away. And, sadly, that usually means burning it with his bodily secretions. My little girl isn’t afraid of him, but that’s because he’s her Uncle Ted, who helps her color things and design things she wants to make. As for jobs, how are you at security? Have you learned how to sniff out evil yet?” He considered what Tomas had said about Nina’s reaction to the park, and added thoughtfully, “Or is that more your sister’s specialty? Tell me, Nina? What is it in the park that has you so worked up? Can you show us?”
He gave the two a smile and a shrug. “I can give you a place to live, you’d have to negotiate wages with my husband, although I have to admit that we’re tight on money right now, unless this Stark contract leads to regular work. Still, we have several buildings that used to be living quarters, besides our own house and Bindi’s special place, plus a full section of property, on the edge of the Everglades. We’ve put sensors and cameras around the most likely avenues of approach, but we could really use someone who knows how to avoid threats, to help us work out where we’ve missed, and what we could do best to fill in the gaps.” He looked at Nina and said sadly, “I have to warn you, if you decide you like the idea, that when I left home, Bindi was forty feet tall. Unless someone threatened Other Daddy or Uncle Ted, she’ll still be that tall. If someone DID threaten them, though, she’ll be taller. Well, unless my mother found a way that she can shrink again.”
He gave Tomas a wry smile. “As for no one wanting a cat boy working for them? I’m half ogre. Can you imagine how much fun I have getting a job? that’s why I drive a truck. Well, and …,” he glanced at Nina and shook his head. “If you’re interested, my truck’s parked in Weehawken - at least until I confirm my contract with Stark. Or you can follow me, if you don’t mind being fussed over by a tailoring shop full of drag queens.” He chuckled. “And I’m pretty sure they’d take one look at both of you and fall in love.”
“Would not surprise me at all. It’s amazing how gentle he can be sometimes.” Tomas smiled softly. Even if he had almost been beaten down, Hulk was doing the exact same thing he would have done.
“Nope, Mom died giving birth to this munchkin and dad.. Well Nina feels guilty that she wasn’t able to cutify the ones who killed him off. HYDRA was a pain in the ass for the one week i worked there and SHIELD I haven’t tried yet. I can sniff out the negative, but Nina seems to be able to detect it early. Example, I took a job as security for a press review and there was a bomber hiding as a reporter. Nina was riled up all week about it until i sniffed out the bomb, that was not a pretty situation.” He sighed and rubbed his forehead again. “On the bright side, lots of fish for lunch.”
“I like fishies!” Nina blurted out, giggling as she looked around. “Man went to sleep, like papa and mama, but he smell bad funny. And he still moves! Bad, bad funny smell.” She mumbled.
“So… A zombie is in central park?”
“Some days he not. He gives bad candy to grownups.”
“Oh, it’s just a drug dealer.” Tomas blushed. “That’s the description you gave last time. As for scaring easily, for the most part its just if I can’t find Nina or if she is in danger or hurt. Are you easily scared Nina?”
“I’m not scare of no things!” She huffed, puffing her chest out as well as her hair to make her seem bigger.
“Loud booming noises, people who smell bad funny, and monsters under the bed.” Tomas corrected, reaching up to give Nina head scratches. “That is no issue at all, i know how to make and set traps and early warning systems in case someone tried to intrude. Although since it’s the Everglades, it should be a little simpler ifwe take into consideration the natural inhabitants.” He started thinking, tapping his fingers against Nina’s ankles. “It wouldn’t hurt anyone, just scare them off. As for your daughter being 40 feet tall, don’t be too worried. Nina would probably be climbing up on her shoulders and in her hair for fun. I’m surprised she didn’t try to climb on you at first.”
“You said to make sure they don’t smell bad first.” the little girl pouted, giving a small yawn as well.“
“We have no issues following you around, it’s better than wandering aimlessly around anyway. As for being fussed over, i draw the line at wearing pink, purple, and green. They don’t exactly compliment my skin tone, and no hair ribbons.” That time the neko blushed a dark red, not looking the other in the eyes like he was embarrassed. In a way he was, but normally his excuse was his sister dressed him up.
Jim mused thoughtfully. “A zombie, or maybe a drug dealer, huh? Maybe we will have to visit the park, so Nina can feel less worried.
He grinned at Nina’s huffing, and fluffing of her hair, and took a photo from his wallet. “Mom’s gonna love you. This is a picture of her.” She as covered with black fur, the same color as Jim’s, with sharp, pointy teeth, and muscles strong enough to pick up a pickup truck - which, in the photo, she was doing, holding it above her and her half-human son, who was at least a foot shorter. In the photo, Jim was facepalming, while his mother was laughing as she held the truck in the air. “That’s my mom. Bindi thinks she’s the best thing since Everglades deer. Except she doesn’t eat grandma, of course, she’d insist I explain if she were here.”
Jim listened, then nodded, and laughed. “Oh, trust me, there won’t be any colors thrown on you unless they think they’ll make you fabulous by doing it. I’m more into poodle skirts and angora sweaters, myself. And, of course, I have a very nice pink wig to top it all off.” He chuckled softly. “No hair ribbons, huh? Nina likes to do that to you? Or is it the morons who can’t tell the difference between cats and yappydogs?”
Jim stood and checked his watch, then grinned at the pair. “If we move and we’re lucky, we can catch the last bus to New Jersey before rush hour. Otherwise, we’ll be stuck in traffic until well after dinner time, and I don’t know about you two, but when my stomach is hungry, it makes noises that scare the other passengers on the bus.”
“Yeah, she can be pretty ferocious.” Tomas smirked, gently taking the picture and smiling. “Reminds me of mom, she strong and kick butt. She and dad actually used to be warriors in the feral colony before we were banished.” He handed the picture back and held onto Nina. “In our community, pure black kittens are bad luck, even more so if the mother dies in child birth. But so far that’s not exactly true. While we are hunted down most of the time we’ve either managed to avoid them or escape. Plus she’s just a little different is all.”
The blush returned, this time darker than before. “Yeah, only Nina is allowed to put me in hair ribbons. I promised her i wouldn’t let anyone else even try.”
“If they do i get to grow up and kick their butts!” The little girl giggled, another yawn escaping her as she laid her head down on her older brothers. “I haven’t really had much experiance with cross dressing myself honestly, but its fun to do every once and again. But yeah, let’s get going! Which buss stop did you want to meet at? We can meet you their.”
Jim shook his head. “Damn. Seems to me that she’s a big advantage, as long as you can understand what she’s warning you about.” He grinned at Nina and nodded. “Yup. You and Bindi will get along just fine. She won’t even complain about your claws when you climb her.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You can meet me there, huh? OK. Well, I was headed to the Port Authority bus terminal. I pick up the express bus to New Jersey from there. You sure you want to travel separately?”
“Yay! I get to be tall!” She cheered, hugging Thomas’s leg as sge was set down on the ground. She looked a little shy with such an act, but she didn’t really seem to mind.
“Positive. We have a… Different method of travel that we prefer.” Tomas smirked and started walking between the two buildings “Port Authority huh? Thats about 20 minutes walk so we should get started. "Up up Nina!” Immediately the two of them began to climb and jump up the buildings, disappearing on the roof tops as they made their way over. Nina was only a pace or two behind her brother.
Jim looked after the two, then shook his head and said softly, "New York,” while chuckling. Only in New York would people traveling like those two not even get a second glance from any bystanders, although he was sure they’d ended up on the Post a time or three. Not the Daily Bugle, though. That paper seemed to reserve its front page for the publisher’s favorite whipping boy, Spider Man.
He watched the two, until they vanished over a rooftop, then shook his head again and made his way down the sidewalk. Like Thomas had said, it was a twenty minute walk, so he needed to make his way there if he was going to meet them in time to catch the bus.
Tomas and Nina were waiting patiently at the bus stop when Jim arrived. Well Tomas was anyway, Nina was curled up in his lap sleeping. Spotting the half-ogre, the neko carefully stood up and walked over to Jim. "Sorry about that. Nina isn’t a fan of public transport so it’s easier for all of us if she just takes a nap for the trip.”
“Sounds like a good plan. Luckily, we got here before rush hour, so it’ll only take a half hour or so once we get moving.” Jim nodded to Tomas, then smiled when he looked over the sleeping kitten. “She’ll be just fine. For some reason, people don’t tend to be a bother around me. At least, as long as they’re sane and sober.” He grinned, revealing a healthy set of pointy teeth. “Oh yes, there’s a diner near where I parked my truck. They serve enough to satisfy even my appetite.” He chuckled. “With five or six orders, at least.”

"Mom’s gonna love you.
"Yeah, she can be pretty ferocious.” Tomas smirked, gently taking the picture and smiling.
"Damn. Seems to me that she's a big advantage, as long as you can understand what she's warning you about." He grinned at Nina and nodded. "Yup. You and Bindi will get along just fine. She won't even complain about your claws when you climb her."
He raised an eyebrow. "You can meet me there, huh? OK. Well, I was headed to the Port Authority bus terminal. I pick up the express bus to New Jersey from there. You sure you want to travel separately?"

At the big brother's warning, Jim broke into laughter. "Don't worry. Bindi's been giving me the Big Eyes since she was a toddler. I'm pretty resistant by now." He held out a hand and smiled. "I'm Jim. Jim Cole. I'm up Florida with a contract from Stark Tower. What brings the two of you here?"
Jim blushed and got down on one knee so he could rescue the little girl's hat. As he offered it to her, he said gently, "I'm sorry, miss. Can I do anything to help? Do you have a big brother or big sister I should look for for you? This isn't a safe place for a little girl to be running around by herself."

Wishing SHIELD were still around
"Just - just be careful, OK?" Bobby had given up on arguing with Jim. They needed the work, and as much as he'd rather Jim stay safely on the farm with him and Bindi, he couldn't work without going out into the world. Ever since Sokovia, he'd worried more about what could happen while Jim was out working, especially given how big a target the truck was.
"I'll abandon the truck if I have to, OK?" Jim said, pulling Bobby into a hug and giving him one last kiss before climbing into the cab. He was worried, too, but he couldn't let it show, or he'd never leave the farm, and with all the money they'd spent on security systems after finding out that SHIELD/HYDRA had once had a supersoldier research facility nearby, their savings were down to the point that they wouldn't be able to pay the taxes if he didn't get some contracts. Bobby could do most of his work from home, but that wasn't enough to pay their expenses, so he would have to get back on the road.
Bindi bounded over for her good-bye hug, and Jim wrapped his arms around her leg to give her a good squeeze.
"Daddy be careful!" Bindi demanded. "Daddy come right home if bad men try to hurt, OK?"
"I promise, sweetie," Jim said. Bobby worrying about him was bad enough, but Bindi was already 40' tall, and since she grew every time she got upset, he had to bed as calm and reassuring as he could be. "Daddy will come right back if bad men try to hurt him. You'll keep Other Daddy and Uncle Ted safe, right?"
"Uncle Ted keeps Bindi safe!" Bindi giggled. "Bindi will keep Other Daddy safe. Promise!"
"That's my girl," Jim said, and gave her a toothy grin. Being half ogre, and therefore a lot less breakable than any human - even Captain America - Jim didn't have any real worries for himself, but Bobby and Bindi worried enough that he would do whatever he could to reassure them. He just hoped he wouldn't have to lose the truck. Not only was it a significant investment, it was his only way of making a living. Things had been a hell of a lot easier when SHIELD had been paying him to haul stuff for them, through fronts or not. Now, it took all Bobby could do to scrape up the contracts he'd been able to get. Jim hated to think it, but he really wished SHIELD were back in business. Just one of their contracts would have them set for the next six months, at the very least.
"Keep ... safe," Dr. Sallis said. "Don't ... want ... Bindi ... worrying."
"You and me, both," Jim said. "You'll keep her schoolwork up to date, Ted?"
"We ... will," Dr. Sallis said, the tendrils handing down either side of his face shaking with his laughter. "She'd ... have made ... a ... good student ... when I ... was ... a professor. As smart ... as she is ... big."
"No arguments there," Jim agreed. "Do you have that list of books you wanted me to pick up while I'm out?"
"On ... your pad," Dr. Sallis said. "Ask ... Dr. Strange ... if you ... can't find ... any."
"Dr. Strange?" Jim asked. "Oh! Right. The doctor in New York." He reached into the cab and pulled his iPad out, scanned his list of contracts, and nodded. "Right. My first contract is for Stark Tower. I can swing by the Village while I'm there."
"Good ... good," Dr. Sallis said. "Have ... safe trip."
Bobby grabbed Jim and gave him another kiss before letting him climb into the truck, and the three of them stood back to watch as Jim put his Kenworth into gear and circled the yard to pull out and start work. He wished he wasn’t deadheading all the way to New York, but the money from the Stark job promised to be worth it. He waved to the three of them as he drove away, watching in the rearview until Bindi vanished from view.
Maybe, if they liked his efficiency, he could turn the job from a one-off to regular hauling work for Stark. It’s not like they could do all their transport by battlesuit, after all. He turned his thoughts away from that subject. Stark got away with being public because he was rich and a media whore. Jim couldn’t afford that. He lacked the first quality - at least, financially - and too much publicity could expose Bindi, and that would be bad.
Muse questions
So the purpose of this meme is to give a little info on your muses without having to rely on others to fill your ask with meme questions. You can fill it out as many times as your heart desires (we all know muses can change with their character development.)
