Chandra Hooper-Barnett, the principal of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas, was fired but then rehired at another school after she held a meeting with only Black students to discuss their grades and future success.

Some families said their children felt singled out when she allegedly told them during the meeting that they were the reason the school received a B instead of an A.

However, in a letter to parents, she took full responsibility, writing that the decision “was not appropriate” and that she never intended “to single out or cause harm to any group of students.”

Although she was fired from Woodrow Wilson High School, the school district later appointed her as the principal of another nearby school, Lincoln High School.

The situation sparked conversation about how schools can address achievement gaps among Black students without making them feel discriminated against.
