I’m in love
Black Lives Matter is held to such a ridiculously high standard. If anyone who is REMOTELY associated with BLM commits an act of violence, white people use it as an excuse to smear the name of the entire movement.
Cops can murder unarmed Black people and many white folks still jump to defend the police force.
This is racism. This is white supremacy culture.
Flat irons and relaxers were never used on set. Ahead of the movie’s premiere. In the Cut talked to the head of Black Panther’s hair department, Camille Friend.
What was the overall creative direction for the hair in Black Panther? There were three parts. For the “traditional” look, we used inspiration from the Zulu tribe, the Maasai tribe, and the Hima tribe. Then we looked at the modern styles in the natural-hair movement. Finally we looked at the Afropunk movement, which has a lot of natural and creative styling. Also, there are five tribes in the story, and we had to create different looks for each tribe.
What was it like working on a movie where everyone was styled in natural hair? There’s no press and comb in this movie. No relaxers, no nothing! That was one of the things that I really was firm about. I requested that people come with their natural hair. People were like, “Are you sure?” and I was like, “Yes, I am sure! We have a qualified staff of hair people who are phenomenal and who are well-versed in natural hair.”al hair.”
How did it feel being a part of this movie? I don’t think black hair has ever been seen in a movie like this. It was an honor to do it and to have an open form to design and take hairstyling to the next level. That’s what we accomplished; we had a great crew and we worked really hard.
What do you want people to take away after seeing this movie? That black hair is versatile and it’s beautiful. With the right products, anything can be re-created.

Get Out (2017) not being nominated in the Drama/Thriller/Horror category and placed in the comedy section instead is not just ‘White People at it Again’ like the whole ‘Hidden Fences’ debacle. It wasn’t innocent ignorance; it was blatant and deliberate disrespect. They couldn’t let such a poignant film that so specifically called out the exploitation of Black People, Black Culture and Black Bodies have the full and proper respect it deserved and that was their way of diminishing the hard work of Jordan, Daniel and everyone else in that movie.
That fact that the film received not one award was insane. It was literally the most talked about and culturally relevant film of the year. It grossed so highly and had such incredible critical claim both by the audience and professional critics. The snub was disgusting.
Also Daniel Kaluuya was robbed.

Vote 👏🏼 in 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 2018 👏🏼 Midterm 👏🏼 Elections 👏🏼
SERIOUSLY
If you vote in Democrats, they’ll be able to block Trump’s policies
It’s not just that they’ll be able to block Drumpf’s policies for the (hopefully only) remaining two years: the entire House of Representatives is up for re-election in 2018. Whoever wins the House in 2018 will still control it in 2020, when we have our next census. This means we voting districts will get to be redrawn and if Republicans retain control of the House in 2020, they will make gerrymandering even worse than it is now, which already favors them.
But the odds are severely in favor of Republicans for 2018. The election is ridiculously lopsided: 23 Democrat seats and both (there are only 2) Independent seats (who Caucus with Dems) will be up for the taking compared to only 8 Republican seats. Not to mention midterm election turnout is always far less than POTUS elections and Republicans consistently turn out for midterms while non-Republicans fail to show up worse than they normally do.
It gets worse. This is the Senate race in 2018:
Arizona - Currently Republican
California - Currently Democrat
Connecticut - Currently Democrat
Delaware - Currently Democrat
Florida - Currently Democrat
Hawaii - Currently Democrat
Indiana - Currently Democrat
Maine - Currently Independent
Maryland - Currently Democrat
Massachusetts - Currently Democrat
Michigan - Currently Democrat
Minnesota - Currently Democrat
Mississippi - Currently Republican
Missouri - Currently Democrat
Montana - Currently Democrat
Nebraska - Currently Republican
Nevada - Currently Republican
New Jersey - Currently Democrat
New Mexico - Currently Democrat
New York - Currently Democrat
North Dakota - Currently Democrat
Ohio - Currently Democrat
Pennsylvania - Currently Democrat
Rhode Island - Currently Democrat
Tennessee - Currently Republican
Texas - Currently Republican
Utah - Currently Republican
Vermont - Currently Independent
Virginia - Currently Democrat
Washington - Currently Democrat
West Virginia - Currently Democrat
Wisconsin - Currently Democrat
Wyoming - Currently Republican
All of the states in bold were awarded to Drumpf, 11 of which are currently held by Democrats. Republicans hold a 52 seat majority right now. If they can maintain the 8 seats they have to defend, they only need 8 Democrat and/or Independent seats to have a 60 seat supermajority and the power to pass basically anything they want under Trump for two years.
If you think it’s catastrophic now (and it is), imagine Drumpf and the Republicans with a 60 seat supermajority for two years plus a Republican House with the power to redistrict in 2020.
And that is why organizing now is critical. Getting people to run against every GOP House Member and tying every action by Trump to them. Make the 2018 elections ALL ABOUT TRUMP. This is also about taking back Governor’s Mansions.
It is NOT impossible, but it requires effort. 2018 elections efforts SHOULD ALREADY BE UNDERWAY!

Colombian human rights defender Emilsen Manyoma
Afro-Colombian human rights activist Emilsen Manyoma Assassinated
On Tuesday police in the Pacific coast city of Buenaventura announced they had discovered the body of Afro-Colombian human rights activist Emilsen Manyoma, 32, and her partner Joe Javier Rodallega, who had been missing since Saturday.
A prominent leader in the Bajo Calima region since 2005, Manyoma was an active member of the community network CONPAZ where she was an outspoken critic of right-wing paramilitary groups and the displacement of locals by international mining and agribusiness interests.
For the past year, Manyoma played a key role in documenting attacks on human rights leaders in the region as part of the recently created Truth Commission.
The police said they had found the bodies in an advanced state of decomposition in a jungle area beside the highway. The Justice and Peace Commission, an ecumenical human rights group, reported that both bodies were severely wounded, with Rodallega’s hands reported tied. Radio Contagio reported that both bodies were beheaded.
While police did not release the names of any suspects, just days before their disappearance on Saturday, Rodallega reported being threatened and said a truck had been circling Manyoma’s house.
According to the human rights organization Front Line Defenders, at least 85 human rights defenders were murdered in Colombia in 2016 alone.

Akira Armstrong was in two Beyoncé videos, but couldn’t find an agent to represent her as a professional dancer because of her size. To change the narrative around what a dancer’s body should look like, Akira started her own dance company, made up of plus-size dancers. “Pretty Big Movement” is destroying dancer stereotypes, one routine at a time.
