I will never be able to fully express how being a lesbian is not considered cool and sexy to average people, who aren't terminally online. i’ve been attempting to write a paragraph about girls’ generation’s legacy, purely linked to and contextualized by the use of into the new world in protests and the women’s marches in south korea for a while now. a video documenting student protesters singing the song while they were surrounded by police symbolizes how into the new world is no longer just the debut song of a popular and successful girl group. it is an anthem of change. a song that so often unites the voices of the disenfranchised in south korea. a song commonly used during lgbt pride parades. a song that was used during protests that led to south korea’s president being impeached. a song used to celebrate the south korean supreme court ruling an abortion ban unconstitutional in april 2019. that is girls’ generation’s legacy. a legacy that transcends chart performance, streams, album sales, petty fan wars and mv views. girls’ generation’s debut and success truly marked the beginning of a movement for progress (most specifically for feminism and lgbt rights) in south korea. their success completely changed the kpop industry, opening doors for girl groups that had previously only opened for men. their legacy is timeless, and should forever be respected.
