PSON Big Bang Invites Out

For everyone who signed up for the Prodigal Son Big Bang so far, invites have gone out to a temporary Discord server that we will use for group collaboration throughout the remainder of the challenge (through the end of October). Sign ups remain open, and we will continue to add people who sign up through July 13th, when team formation will start on the Discord server.

If you’re having trouble finding your invite: If we could contact you on Discord, invite went there. Then, if we could contact you on Tumblr, invite went there. Then, if we could contact you on Twitter, invite went there. If you can’t find your invite or it’s expired, please send a DM and we’ll get you a new one. We had some invite link expiration issues and can get you a new one easily - sorry for the trouble.

Folks are coming on in to start meeting each other, find answers to frequently asked questions, and ask additional questions. If you signed up, hope to see you there. :)

Prodigal Son Big Bang

The Prodigal Son Big Bang 2020 is a challenge for writers to write at least 20,000 words and artists to create at least one art piece inspired by that work in any medium. All ratings, genres, pairings, and art types welcome! The sign up deadline for writers, artists, and betas is July 13, 2020. After sign ups close, all participants will be invited to a group discussion to pair up with a teammate. There are 2.5 months of writing and art creation time. The paired writings and accompanying art pieces will be released the last week of October.

Respect Expectations

The Prodigal Son Big Bang Challenge is a safe space for writers and artists collaborate exploring and expressing their creativity. As such, joining this challenge means:

All people are welcome.

All subjects are welcome. Stories and art pieces will be appropriately tagged.

All pairings are welcome. YKINMKATO: your kink is not my kink, and that’s okay. Ship shaming will not be tolerated.

General rudeness, aggressiveness, or argumentativeness will get a warning from a mod. Repeated warnings or behaving in an intentionally malicious way will result in your removal from the challenge.

Openly communicate needs for help. Mods will not know you need assistance unless you ask. As this challenge is running for a while, mods can more effectively help you the sooner you reach out.

Challenge Expectations

After sign ups close, everyone participating will be invited to a group chat, where you will be asked to share:

During this one-week time period, you’ll have the opportunity to find a teammate (artist or writer, whichever one you aren’t signed up as) to work with over the next 2.5 months. Mods will assist the team formation process until everyone has a teammate.

After you’re matched, we’d encourage collaborating on brainstorming to get to a common idea for the pieces to mesh together as one cohesive collection of writing + art piece.

FAQ

Welcome to the Prodigal Son Whump Big Bang 2020 FAQ

If you have other specific questions that need to be addressed, please ask via Tumblr or contact a mod.

If I finish it, can I submit a WIP I’ve been posting?  No. No part of your story can be posted anywhere prior to your assigned posting date.

Can I submit a sequel to a story I’ve already posted?  Yes. If the submitted story is completely stand-alone, does not end in a TBC, and meets all other requirements.

Can a story be AU?  Yes.

Is there a word limit?  There is no upper limit, but the story must meet a 20,000 word minimum.

Can writers collaborate on a story?  Yes. As long as it meets the story requirements. Collaborating writers will need to sign up together on a single google form.

Can an author turn in more than one story?  Yes. All submissions must meet story requirements and deadlines.

Can an artist do more than one piece of art?  Yes. For the claimed story, the more the better!

Is there a size limit on art?  No. As long as it’s postable, you’re good.

When I post my story, can I also use art that I or someone other than my artist has done?  No, not before the end of the posting period. We ask that the writer and the artist collaborate.

Can I give my artist direction on the art?  No. This is not a commissioned piece. It’s a good idea for the artist and author to talk about the work, but the ultimate call on art is made by the artist, just as the final say on the story content is made by the author.

Can I turn in my rough draft to my beta before the deadline?  Yes. Follow the instructions to upload your draft to AO3 and notify the mods.

I haven't heard from my author/artist in weeks, what should I do?  Please contact the Tumblr account or mods ASAP and they’ll arrange for a pinch hitter to step in. PLEASE do not wait until the day before you’re scheduled to post to bring this up. If you haven’t heard from your partner (author or artist) in a week’s time, and you’ve made an honest effort to contact them, please message us immediately.

Writers

Expectations

Stories must have a minimum length of 20,000 words. There is no maximum length.

Stories can be gen, any pairing, any subject, including AUs and crossovers. All welcome!

The central story element must focus on characters from Prodigal Son Fox.

In Prodigal Son fics, at least one character must be a canon character (one seen on-screen).

Completed stories must be posted to AO3 under the Prodigal Son Big Bang 2020 Collection. A master list with links to each story will be posted to Tumblr, as well.

Stories can NOT be posted anywhere prior to your assigned posting date.

Stories must be betaed. Any story that has not been betaed will be rejected from submission to the collection.

Stories must include artist recognition and beta recognition in the beginning author’s note. The artist must be referenced as a giftee, and the artist’s work referenced as an inspiration.

Writers must agree to stay in communication with mods and with their paired artist. Disappearing with no explanation will result in being dropped from the challenge. If a deadline will be missed, please let mods know as soon as you know so we can best help you.

Important Deadlines

You must sign up to participate by July 13, 2020.

You will participate in team formation July 13-20, 2020 in order to pair with an artist teammate. Your artist teammate will create one piece of polished art (title banner, illustration, manip, vid, etc.) to accompany your story. Ideally, you will be collaborating with them from the get-go in order to create works that reflect each other.

The due date for your first draft (20,000 words minimum to include summary, rating, story warnings, tags and final title) is October 1, 2020. This is important and required, because betas and artists will need time to work as well. Upload your draft to AO3, and tag a mod (jameena, sonshineandshowers) as a co-creator. This is temporary so we can see your draft work. You will remove this before the final post. Please see How to Post: Drafts for instructions.

Betas are to return their final comments to you by October 19, 2020.

An assigned staggered posting schedule will begin October 25, 2020. Please see How to Post: Final Submission for instructions.

Expectations

You agree to create at least one completed, polished piece of art of any form to accompany one of the Prodigal Son Big Bang 2020 stories.  

Art can be of any type: original illustration, cover art, photo manipulation, vids, etc.

Art can be of any rating you choose, but a good rule of thumb is not to exceed the rating the author gives their story. By creating and posting explicit art, you agree that you are of legal age to do so.

Completed art must be posted to AO3 under the Prodigal Son Big Bang 2020 Collection. A master list with links to each artwork will be posted to Tumblr, as well.

Art can NOT be posted anywhere prior to your assigned posting date.

The author must be referenced as a giftee, and the author’s work referenced as an inspiration.

Artists must agree to stay in communication with mods and with their assigned author. Disappearing with no explanation will result in being dropped from the challenge.

Expectations and Deadlines

By committing to be a beta reader, you agree to beta anywhere from one to three 20,000 word stories depending on the number of volunteers. This is a big responsibility, but vital for ensuring the quality of our fandom works!

Betas must agree to stay in communication with mods and with their assigned author(s). Disappearing with no explanation will result in being dropped from the challenge.

Important Deadlines

Beta sign ups will be accepted through July 13, 2020.  

When sign ups close, writers and betas will receive their pairings July 13-20, 2020. Assigning betas ensures that each beta is given equal workloads. The last chance for writers to send their work to you is October 1, 2020, and we would appreciate that you give your final comments to them by October 19, 2020 or sooner. If at any point you feel overwhelmed or that you cannot complete your duties, please contact the mods (jameena, sonshineandshowers) ASAP.

Writers: How to Post

Draft

1. Go to the Prodigal Son Big Bang 2020 Collection. 

2. Click Post to Collection 

3. Fill out Rating, Archive Warnings, Fandoms, Categories, Relationships, Characters, Additional Tags, Work Title, and Summary as you normally would.

4. Check Add co-creators. Add the mod (jameena, sonshineandshowers) and your artist teammate as a co-creator. This is temporary so they can see your draft work. You will remove them before your final post.

NOTE: Your artist teammate must have Allow others to invite me to be a co-creator enabled in My Preferences for this to work. From any AO3 screen, they can hover over their username in the top right, click My Preferences, and check the Allow others to invite me to be a co-creator checkbox. You will get an error upon saving the draft if they do not.

5. Add a beginning author’s note. Thank your beta and the artist you collaborated with, and give credit to the artist for their work. This can be done in any form. If you’d like a template: Thanks to [beta] for being an awesome beta to work with. Thanks to [artist] for the inspiration and lovely cover art. Please visit, kudo, and comment on their work here: [link].

6. The collection is automatically filled in for you - do not remove it. Gift your work to the artist you collaborated with. List the work of the artist you collaborated with as an inspiration by copying in the work’s link.

7. Complete chapters, language, and work text as you normally would.

8. Click Preview. DO NOT CLICK POST.

9. On the preview screen, click Save as Draft. DO NOT CLICK POST.

10. The mods and the artist you’re collaborating with should now be able to see your story in draft form.

Final Submission

1. Edit your draft work. Delete the mod (Jameena, sonshineandshowers) and artist co-creator from the work by clicking the X next to their names.

2. Preview one final time to see that you’re 100% happy with how it appears. Save As Draft.

3. When it is your day to post, click Post.

Artists: How to Post

Draft

b. In the Rich Text form, click the picture button. 

c. Paste in the URL where the work is hosted.

d. If you have a video, copy the embed code for it from wherever it’s hosted and paste it into the HTML view. 

e. If your art is another type that you need help figuring out how to share, please contact the mods. 

8. Click Preview. DO NOT CLICK POST. Ensure your work appears as you intend. 

9. On the preview screen, click Save as Draft. DO NOT CLICK POST.

10. The mods and the artist you’re collaborating with should now be able to see your story in draft form.

Final Submission

1. Edit your draft work. Delete the mod (Jameena, sonshineandshowers) and writer co-creator from the work by clicking the X next to their names.

2. Preview one final time to see that you’re 100% happy with how it appears. Save As Draft.
