Trinity’s Fort Point
Picture this: It’s a quiet Sunday morning in Trinity, NL.
Half the town is in church, heads bowed in prayer, when suddenly a thunderous roar echos across the harbour.
There’s instant panic.
It isn’t because no one knows what’s happening — that’s the problem. It’s a sound they’ve been dreading. The noise had come from the signal cannon at Fort Point. The watchman at the mouth of the harbour had just sounded the alarm:
the enemy was at the door.

John Vincent: The Fisherman Who Painted The Pope
"[Vincent's fishing scenes are] doubly interesting, for they represent a characteristic phase of the life of Mr. Vincent's native Newfoundland, in addition to being good examples of technique. The spirit of the scene has been caught and admirably revealed." -- Architectural Review, 1919
SPARKS by The Way East
The Way East is a St. John’s-based four-piece, rock band that has been releasing single and winning fans from all over. It’s easy to see why.
Their brand of alternative/ progressive rock brings to mind the best of the Canadian alt music scene of the 90s — think high-energy production, infectious hooks and anthemic choruses.
The Way East? Think high-energy production, infectious hooks and anthemic choruses.
I was a big fan of their first two singles — High School Locker and Closer — but they may just have been the warm up. Their latest offering Sparks, written by band member Chris Hibbs and produced by Krisjan Leslie, takes the song craft to the next-level, doubles down on the 90s-vibe, and easily establishes them as one of the most exciting local bands making music today.
Thematically, the track explores the struggles within relationships and how hard it can be to ‘start a spark’.
The song is worth your attention. Add it to your playlists today… It’s on all the usual streaming platforms.
Keep an eye out for The Way East’s debut album Broken Memories. It’s due in the spring of 2026.
