Bigger than fake news: Trump’s rise was fueled by a deeper narrative of fake history

Trump's lies about crime, Muslims and immigration aren't meant to make sense — only to confirm his followers' fears

Fake history showed up early when Trump first announced his campaign, blaming Mexico for “sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” The clear implication was that crime and illegal immigration were both growing problems, that they’re interrelated, and that politicians had dishonestly minimized them out of active malice toward “real Americans.”  

All of that was total BS. Both crime rates and unauthorized immigration are down significantly from their historic high points. Violent crime rates peaked in 1991, and have fallen by roughly half since then. Net “illegal” immigration has fallen to roughly zero, if not less than zero, since the Great Recession began. (In other words, roughly the same number of undocumented immigrants have left the country as have entered.) Trump’s whole rationale turns to dust if the actual history is acknowledged. Logically, at least, there’s no there there.

While Trump lied in many different ways about many different things throughout his campaign, fake history provided the surrounding mythological framework that made his other lies work. It justified them, made them sound plausible and formed the foundation for other lies he built on top of them — especially the notion that he was a unique truth-teller on the side of “real Americans” and that anyone who said anything different was out to get them, especially anyone who challenged Donald Trump.

For good reason, Trump never tried to refute the actual historical record, choosing distraction and misdirection instead. First he made the baseless claim that “You have hundreds of thousands of people [i.e., undocumented immigrants] going to state and federal penitentiaries. That just came out in a Homeland Security report.” (No such report existed.) Then he took advantage of a single tragic but essentially random murder — which statistically proved nothing — to justify his entire fake-history-based argument. Put that together with his constant distraction strategy, faithfully supported by the media, and he got away with it.

He won because Republicans spent 25 years turning Hillary into the embodiment of whatever you hate the most, and Bernie Sanders picked up that torch and gave it to a new generation. He won because racial demograohics and social mores are progressing faster than anyone could have imagined even a decade ago. He won because Mitch McConnel stole a Supreme Court seat from Barack Obama and dangled it as the ultimate prize in front of social conservatives. He won because people think being rich makes you intelligent. He won because people haven’t cracked open a history, haven’t studied how democracies falter. He won because a third of the country lives in a hermetically sealed alternative reality governed by Fox News and sundry racist blogs. He won because Vladmir Putin aired all the dirty laundry of the Democratic party to a populace who had never seen how the sausage gets made. 

He won because demagogues from Cleon of Athens to Joseph McCarthy always win, right up until they face a humiliating defeat. Cleon was killed by Spartans, Hitler was forced into suicide by the Allies, Mussolini was butchered by rebels and hung by the heels on meat hooks in a square in Milan. McCarthy was dressed down on live television and drank himself to death two years later. Trump will either die or be cast out and humiliated, almost certainly by overreaching and angering all the wrong people. 

But here’s the part that you always have to remember whenever discussing Donald Trump: more people voted for Hillary Clinton. He won the presidency because the founding fathers knew they couldn’t have a viable country without the slave states, and the slaveowners knew they were outnumbered, so they demanded a system whereby a state that had relatively few eligible voters, but high population, would have outsized power through an electoral college. So whatever I’m doing must be popular, because Hillary got the most votes.

That last paragraph is a lie. The outsized number thing because of slavery is the exact reason they 3/5ths was added. It was a way to discount slave owners and tell black people they aren’t even a full person.

The problem is that the electoral college doesn’t give outsized power to large states. It actually gives it to low population states. That’s the problem. How can we honestly allow a guaranteed minimum representation to small groups of people? It’s disgusting. The liberal majority should have 100% full say over everyone. 

It treats states as individual entities rather than a single country. This is problematic. Liberals in California should decide how much people in Wyoming are taxed and what laws they have to follow because we are part of one nation and we out number them. The mass majority of people should control and decide the future for smaller states. It’s what’s in the best interest of the masses.
