Up until I was like 9 I thought that “gunpoint” was an actual place where crimes happen. Think about it. It’s always on the news:
“A man is being held up at gunpoint.”
“Terrorists are being terrorized at gunpoint.”

Bret Weinstein warned Congress last week that Evergreen State is just the most visible example of a despotic progressive “cult” on college campuses.
Campus police advised Weinstein to leave campus, saying they could not ensure his safety, but the protests continued to escalate, climaxing when students held the school’s president and other high-ranking administrators hostage until they agreed to fully comply with a list of demands.
The hostage-taking earned the students praise from faculty members, but drew a rebuke from the school’s Board of Trustees, which called the protest tactics “indefensible.”
Referencing his subsequent experience at Evergreen State, which later led to a $3.8 million lawsuitagainst the institution, Weinstein warned the committee that lawmakers “should take my tale as cautionary.”
Weinstein, however, warned against simply characterizing the demonstrations as a free speech crisis, asserting far more pernicious problems lurk beneath that surface.
“Is there a free speech crisis on college campuses? One can certainly make that argument, but that portrayal is at least as misleading as it is informative,” he said. “What is occurring on college campuses is about power and control—speech is impeded as a last resort, used when people or groups fail to self-censor in response to a threat of crippling stigma and the destruction of their capacity to earn.”
“These tools are being used to unhook the values that bind us together as a nation: equal protection under the law, the presumption of innocence, a free marketplace of ideas, the concept that people should be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin,” he added.
According to Weinstein, the wave of activist demonstrations “functions much more like a cult, in which the purpose is only understood by the leaders, and the rest have been seduced into a carefully architected fiction.”

The incident took place during the second day of demonstrations demanding the resignation of Professor Bret Weinstein, who angered many students when he challenged the school’s decision to ask white people to leave campus for a day of diversity programming in an all-staff email.

If they aren’t in that room, then we did something wrong, so you all need to watch that door, watch all the doors, the windows, you need to keep eyes on them,” one protester commands, referencing all of the potential exit points that administrators could use to make an escape. “Somebody needs to go in that room real quick to make sure there’s no way for them to leave.”

The parents what to travel to Italy for alternate treatment however the government has blocked them from leaving the hospital and order the child’s breathing tube to be removed. The doctors believed he would die immediately but its been..two days(?) and he hasn’t. So last I heard they weren’t giving him food or water (I think that may have changed but Im not 100% sure). Parents are going through UK court system which keeps denying their request to let their son travel to Italy and say he must die. Italy has provided the boy with a citizenship and a helicopter to get him to the hospital there.
Okay so I read about it a bit more and here are my thoughts. I understand the recommendation to not pursue treatment it happens. Treatment can be brutal and in a lot of cases it’s just suffering piled onto dying which is why palliative care exists. You can’t always save someone. Maybe it’s the right call maybe it isn’t I’m not a doctor.
The part that’s outrageous is that the decision is being made for them. It’s their fucking child and if they want to pursue every option who the fuck are you to say no, order 12 guards to prevent them from leaving without a dead child and deny them the ability to travel. Fuck the UK I hope your burn yourselves to the ground you fucking deserve it.
And the fucking court oh my God these pieces of shit not only keep rejecting their appeals but got pissy with the parents for even trying, making some snarky comment about it not being groundhog day and they don’t get to keep trying every day. They’re son is dying and you’re not letting them pursue options..maybe pick a better spot for a shitty joke you fuckwad.
At the last court hearing, that same Italian helicopter mentioned was waiting at the hospital, ready to fly little Alfie straight to the Vatican hospital they wanted to take him to. They were waiting and ready. Prepared. I have literally been on and off crying over this case for weeks because I don’t want another Charlie Gard. I really don’t.
And the no food thing hasn’t changed. He’s allowed water though from what I’ve heard.

I have seen such studies, and I’m aware that people use guns successfully to defend themselves all the time. However, there are problems with this. For one, it’s not enough. It simply doesn’t work on the large scale. We still lead the civilized world by quite a margin in things like school shootings and other domestic terrorism, despite having some of the loosest gun control. The cases where someone actually kills a person who would have killed them first are extremely rare, and most times someone brings a gun into the situation, even in defence of themselves or others, a preventable death occurs. For another, those “bad guys with guns”? The vast majority weren’t committing crimes that would have carried the death sentence. People get killed for things like breaking and entering, mugging, etc. when they should just get a few months of jail time and a fine. These aren’t “bad guys” getting killed by “good guys”, it’s poor people turning to crime to support themselves because the capitalist economy failed them, then getting murdered for it while their murderers are celebrated as heroes for “standing their ground.”
What is a large enough scale? Kennesaw GA made gun ownership mandatory and crime dropped. Population has tripled.
Would you support trying it on a larger city?

Also, the root of the issue here is the culture and the climate in which these concerns are even rooted. The issue isn’t whether or not someone should be able to defend themselves from an attacker. The issue is *why* some citizens resort to crime, including and especially violent crime, and also, what kind of society do we want to create? What kind of culture do we want to live in? Would it be better to address the economical problems that lead to higher crime rates, or just let the economy collapse and instead make sure everyone has a gun? The answer should be pretty obvious.
If we instituted proper gun control like places like Singapore and Japan and Australia have, then we might be able to get away from the culture of “us vs. them” and “stand your ground” we live in. We need to stop being so afraid of each other and start using reason instead of force to solve issues. Otherwise we will continue to have many times more gun deaths per capita than almost any other first world country and perpetuate a culture of fear and dehumanization that has already left is divided more than ever before.
Guns give you something to hide behind. Have the courage to use your mind instead of bullets. Violence is the coward’s way.

I’m going to add my own experience here.
I have a cousin who has been a crackhead for over 20 years. Now, even the rare times she IS sober she’s still highly irrational, violent, and ultra-paranoid.
She has broken into and assaulted quite a number of people, stolen vehicles, lunged at family members with a weapon, she’s even found a way to cut power to an entire city then break into a police station because she thought she could erase her info from the mother ship (whom all the townspeople worshiped, worked for and and spied on her to gather said info...which was also sold to ISIS...she used another term but it’s extremely racist and I don’t wanna use it).
I’m not even exaggerating, that was literally what she thought was happening. There is no talking reason to her.
Obviously you’ve lived an unusually privileged life if you don’t believe there are plenty of crazed and violent desperate addicts who break into places and assault people. Or even believe they’re such a rarity that the victims just have to be “one of the unluckiest people around”.
Reason will NOT reach people in altered mental states. That aside, reason will NOT reach people who have decided they are going to hurt you. The sound of a gun cocking definitely will, though. Even if I never plan to fire, at least there’s the high chance the sound itself will scare them off.
