3RD ANNUAL LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL TEA FESTIVAL
JACKY LAU - Content Contributor
Walking into this event, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. Being Chinese, I have some knowledge of general tea etiquette, but through and through, I was out of my element. My initial reaction to this event: cozy. The 20 or so exhibitors could have been explored within 5 minutes, but like all fine things in life, drinking tea is a slow process meant to be savored and enjoyed, so off I went.
The festival swag bag provided a porcelain teacup that allowed the attendee to taste the various teas offered for sampling. I was surprised by the abundance of fruit tea at the festival. My first tea was provided by Chado itself, located right next to the festival, the person pouring my tea listed off 5-6 ingredients in the tea, but to my untrained palette, it tasted just like agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus tea). One benefit of the festival being cozy was that I was able to converse with the vendors in much more depth. They were able to educate me on the 6 tea bases available: green, white, black, red, oolong and fruit/mixed. Although educational, I was thirsty in no time. I moved down the line of exhibitors and kindly asked them to pour me cup after cup. Behind one of the vendors, I read, “Kids Tea”. The Tea Gallerie’s seller told me, “It’s Rose Parade for the big kid in all of us.” Rose Parade was an unmistakable party in my mouth. I read the ingredients, more hibiscus. I’m not sure if that is going to be the ongoing theme of the day. The telltale sign of the sweet yet tangy taste of hibiscus was prominent in this tea.
As I moseyed around a few more vendors and coyly asked to try tea at every booth, I looked at my watch, I noticed I have spent my whole afternoon at this festival taste testing everything in sight. Besides being waterlogged, I probably have enough antioxidant to fight off the incoming flu season. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stop by the educational events where they paired tea with chocolate or tea with cheese, that would be on my to-do list for next year.

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS
A9ent 760 - Staff Writer
On October 15, 1997, Project 760 Productions was established after its first television project Paintball TV aired on San Francisco's CityVisions Public Access TV. A few months later, Project 760 Productions aired its first television show on anime fandom called World of Anime in February 1998, but not before taping its pilot episode in January that year. Since then, Project 760 Productions has been a part of the anime and cosplay community in Northern and Southern California, including having its own convention and collaborating with other conventions and festivals. We've also included non-anime projects into our repertoire of media and events, with our most recent being [SPOT] in the past 15 years. Fifteen years later, we're still around doing what we do best: Providing our viewers and our event visitors with an invitation to appreciate the interests that we have been a part of, whether it's Japanese animation and cosplay or street festivals and special events. While we are still growing, we feel that there are still many things to explore and learn from, which makes the future even more exciting.
One of our new projects will be coming in 2013 and we'll have a formal announcement about it on October 15th, our Anniversary date. I hope that you will be able to join us for our special announcement.
On behalf of myself and the countless others that have been a part of the Project 760 Productions crew over the last 15 years, we wholeheartedly thank you for your support and we hope to continue working with all of you for many years to come.
[SPOT] Los Angeles 2012 Obon Festival
Derek Dyrenforth - Contributing Writer
Nestled near the heart of Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles is the Higashi Honganji Temple. To many regulars to the area, it’s often a quiet Buddhist temple but for the weekend of July the 27th to the 28th it was anything but quiet. On this particular weekend an Obon Festival was held on the temple grounds. The Obon (or “Bon” by some) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor one’s ancestors, in Japan you will find temple grounds and street corners alive with a variety of live acts, dances, food stands and carnival games.
For the Obon Festival in Little Tokyo, the best description of the venue is that it was a combination of the traditional and modern. As I drew closer to the temple ground, the first thing I was greeted by a tune from surf rock legend, Dick Dale by one of the live bands. Such a sound appropriately set a ‘California’ vibe for this festival in LA. Most of the bands primarily stuck to 1950s-1980s rock music which the attendees seemed to enjoy, myself included. While the music may be “old” to some, all ages seemed to enjoy it. Proof of that was when I and other attendees saw a child no older than four years old doing ‘the twist’ to the song “Pretty Woman” as a small crowd awed at the absolute cuteness.
There were also more traditional Japanese performances during the festivities that gave me a warm reminder of my experience of Obon such as taiko drums, martial art exhibitions and Minyo bands. However, the centerpiece of any Obon is the bon dori, a dance that is designed to welcome ancestral spirits. Attendees in Little Tokyo danced in a large circle to the infectious beating of a drum. It was interesting to see people in traditional Japanese dress such as kimono and yukata dancing alongside others in modern western clothing such as jeans and shirts.
Along with the performances there were also other activities for attendees in the form of carnival games. They were all mostly designed for young kids but there were definitely some adults that were hyped to play. One such game was a rubber duck race in which the object was to propel a rubber duck with a spray bottle past a finish line; for one “kid at heart” it was the first time I saw an adult so amped to win a toy car. There were other games like penny toss and a tic-tac-toe game by throwing softballs into squares. I was rather sad to not see my favorite game, the goldfish scoop. It’s a game that I remember seeing as kid watching Anime in which a player uses an extremely flimsy paper net to scoop a goldfish into a bowl. One’s prize is the goldfish they catch, it’s pretty much a scam since the paper in the net dissolves the second it touches water but I wanted to play it.
If performances or games aren’t your thing or you just worked up an appetite, the food at the festival was very delicious. Attendees had their choices from Japanese dishes such as somen (cold noodles), teriyaki and dango (a Japanese pastry). There were also Western dishes like burgers, hog dogs and tamales. Finishing any of those foods with a shaved ice really hit the spot when the heat started to hit hard this weekend. I tried a little bit of everything myself throughout the day and felt guilty going off my diet but felt I amazingly satisfied all the same.
Being thoroughly entertained and well fed these past two days, I definitely came out happy with attending this Obon festival. One doesn’t have to be Buddhist or even believe in sprits to have a good time. If you love fun and food and were in the area but didn’t attend, you missed out but there is always next year.

From now on, look for convention tips to at the end of my select World of Anime 760 articles. People I meet at conventions ask me about different things they should do to prepare for conventions, so I thought that integrating these tips into my articles would help everyone get ready for a show. I hope everyone will enjoy reading them and can give me some feedback :)
You can find an example of my convention tips in the World of Anime 760 link I posted here.
