Mankind’s curiosity has always had ambitious goals. To put a man on the moon would be the greatest scientific achievement of the modern world. But after the moon, mankind kept reaching. When NASA and the US Government shutdown space shuttle flights in 2011, they made no mention of their future plans. But behind the scene, since the early 2000’s, NASA had been working on something much bigger. Operating in secret, the plan for a human mission to Mars had been born, rejected, reborn, shut down and brought back to life time and time again. Technology advance. Science got better. And soon enough, there was no reason to funnel money into the shuttle program when Mars was in NASA’s grasp. Twelve astronauts have trained and prepared for a mission that sends them into space and towards Mars. The world is waiting with baited breath to find out if mankind can really set foot on Mars. ||
Hello! I am so excited to announce the return of Project Ares! We are a revamped, oc roleplay that is based around a mission to Mars, using content created by Andy Weir and his novel, The Martian. When THE TRAVELER entered the world, their father let out the biggest hell yeah heard in America that day. The sixth, and final child, of the THE TRAVLER’S family was finally a boy/girl. Their father loved all his boys/girls, gave them the best and honestly would have been just fine had THE TRAVELER been a boy/girl but he finally got his boy/girl. Their childhood was levels of happy under a dad who worked endless hours at a bank and a mom who loved teaching as much as she loved her kids. Even the littlest sibling of five brothers/sisters, THE TRAVELER was doted on by all of them endlessly
Still growing up in a small town, THE TRAVELER wanted to see the world, wanted to do something great and meaningful with their life and everyone understood and supported that. They was the all state athlete at the school and lead the Titans to their first state championships ever. THE TRAVELER caught the eye of a few schools and they planned on maybe trying to go college then pro. But the Twin Towers fell and suddenly, THE TRAVELER felt called to make a difference. Despite some disagreements with their folks, at seventeen, they enlisted in the United States Marines Corp and was ready to be an grunt. It was hard for their parents to ship them off to war but THE TRAVELER swore all they wanted was to protect their country and be a patriot.
But war wore on THE TRAVELER. Every day their brothers and sisters were dying, and it felt like they’d never win against the enemy. After their unit was ambushed, their Humvee blown to shreds and their best friend died in their arms, they had to get out. Adjusting to civilian life was rough on them. While in the service, they got their degree in psychology and advice from their dad led them to working at the local VA with other vets. It fit THE TRAVELER but it didn’t help the part in them that was restless and the part that just wanted to great things. When NASA announced they were recruiting a new astronaut class from the general public, a few nudges from their family led to them applying. Out of 6,147 applicants, THE TRAVELER was picked as one of 11 to try.
Life came back to THE TRAVELER through the training and they graduated a success. Working for NASA brought them back to life and helped them deal with the horrors they had seen. When Project Ares was announced, they kicked their ass into gear to get one of the seats on the mission and it paid off. Getting ready to go to space is a little different than war and THE TRAVELER’s still healing so some have concerns about them but overall, they’re ready to prove that they earned their seat and that they are going to make a big damn difference as one of the first on Mars.

Some kids were born into NASA THE LEGACY was one of them. Their grandfather was a navy pilot select for an Apollo mission and after blowing out his knee, took a job within NASA. Eventually he was a mission director for Apollo missions, their father worked his way up as an operation to a mission director for the Columbia missions and THE LEGACY? They knew from the time they were four years old they were going to the stars for their entire family. Whenever their elementary classes study space, they knew everything and more. Turns out bringing in moon rocks actually makes you a rock star.
THE LEGACY lived a typical suburban life. Their parents loved them, put them into any activity they wanted and supported them. They managed to talk all AP and gifted classes in high school, asking for private tutors to ensure that their scores were high enough for an ivy league. Those scores eventually got them a scholarship to Brown and knowing space was the ultimate goal, they gained their bachelor’s in astrophysics and instantly applied to NASA.
Applying to the Astronaut Training program at twenty-two, THE LEGACY worked their ass off while taking additional courses for their master’s degree. Knowing THE LEGACY through their father and grandfather, they were selected at 24 to head up to the International Space Station and became the youngest human to ever be in space, a title that they holds quite close to their heart. Despite being well versed in astrophysics, they came into their own as a payload specialist, knowing exactly how many kilograms of supplies, food, fuel and more any given flight or mission would need. They flew countless missions between earth and the ISS, each time being more and more amazed by the stars.
After the announcement of Project Ares, THE LEGACY was informed internally they’d be going, in part due to being one of the most experienced astronauts NASA had in their arsenal. They never dreamed that they’d actually get to go to another planet, and they take that quite seriously. THE LEGACY has also has the responsibility of making sure the rest of the crew is ready for a prolonged life in space, especially the crew members who have never gone before. When it comes down to it, there are few as faithful and steadfast as THE LEGACY.

Most people realized that THE CHEMIST had a mind unlike most anyone else within two seconds of meeting them. Born in EUROPEAN COUNTRY to a pair of teacher parents, it was clear to their parents that their intelligence was off the chart. Developing faster than most other children, by the age of five THE CHEMIST was strictly set on chemistry while most boys were out playing football. Living in the west afford more freedoms to the BENTLEY’s and they were able to get THE CHEMIST tested and accepted to a prestigious boarding school in Switzerland. Maybe most kids would have struggled to understand why their parents were leaving them but THE CHEMIST understood perfectly.
Despite efforts to entice their attention elsewhere, chemistry owned their heart from day one. There was something about taking dangerous gasses and liquids and being able to pull the base elements from them that challenged THE CHEMIST in a way that little else could. By the time their schooling in Switzerland was complete, THE CHEMIST headed across the Atlantic to attend Yale and quickly blew most of the professors away with their vast understanding of a complicated field. Earning their BA was quite simple and while others wanted them to stick around and earn their Master’s and Ph.D through the school, there was something of an adventurer in THE CHEMIST and they needed to go elsewhere and experience chemistry in a new way. There was a return to COUNTRY OF ORIGIN for their Master’s and then a stop at Cambridge for their Ph.D.
Many assumed that following the completion of their education, THE CHEMIST would simply pursue teaching as well like their parents had. Instead, seeking a challenge, THE CHEMIST wrangled themself a position as a scientist at the World Health Organization, researching disease and testing if perhaps the elements could defeat them. While dedicated to their work. THE CHEMIST was easily swayed into considering a position within the European Space Agency. With so many planets in the solar system, and beyond, THE CHEMIST’ expertise when it came to the gas plants was highly sought after. Eventually they relented and joined, only going through the astronaut program to be able to perform experiments in space, THE CHEMIST found that they did in fact love outer space and decided to use their months long stay at the International Space Station to become an EVA Specialist.
With the Mars mission revealed, the ESA put forth THE CHEMIST as another candidate for one of their two seats within the crew. While there would be some value to having a chemist on Mars just in case, it was the EVA Specialty that sealed the deal and got THE CHEMIST picked. This is the greatest opportunity they’ve ever received and while making things go boom in space is bad, maybe there will be some use for the boom.

When THE CHARMER was ten years old and the space shuttle Columbia launched into outer space with its’ first six person crew since the Challenger explosion, they knew that one day they wanted to be on one of those shuttles. Growing up, THE CHARMER lived the All-American life as the child of a detective and teacher. Their grades were decent, could have been better had teachers bothered to test them for the gifted program, sports were their thing and even though they did have a weird fliration with soft grunge in the 90’s, THE CHARMER worked their ass off to get into the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.
For the longest time, THE CHARMER figured they wanted to be a badass Navy pilot like in Top Gun but after taking a general mechanical engineering class as a requirement, they couldn’t stop fixing things. THE CHARMER received their commission into the US Navy at the age of 22 and earned the rank Ensign. The Navy stuck them on the submarine pipeline and while most people would have lost their minds stuck inside a hunk of steely death trap, THE CHARMER thrived and thrived.
Despite only six year into their naval career, and one of the quickest to ever earn the rank of Lt. Commander, THE CHARMER was hand selected by the Chief of Naval Operations to begin testing and training to become an astronaut. The ten-year-old in them couldn’t believe it was finally going to happen. In 2009, THE CHARMER entered space for the first time on the STS-128 Discovery. After that first taste, they couldn’t get enough, flying three more mission, including one with the Russian space agency.
After the shuttle program was grounded, THE CHARMER floated between sea rotations and flight missions as rumbling of a Mars mission finally reached their ears. When it came to candidates to command the Bravo Team, THE CHARMER’s name was at the top of every list. Making sure they passed all the tests, the day they got word that they were going to Mars was probably one of the best days of their life. While THE CHARMER has been in command of ships before, this is their first time in command for a space flight. They’re a fair, loyal and kind commander that knows when to put the jokes in reserves and focus on the task at hand.

Geniuses come in all shapes and sizes, but THE GENIUS Mara was a tiny, lethal little genius. They could break any crib or gate to sneak away and get the cookies. Their mother had even tried to hide the cookies on a top shelve and THE GENIUS managed to build a ladder out of boxers on the pantry floor. Yeah, they were a force to be reckoned with and those who took an eye of them for even half a second typically paid the price heavily. Since THE GENIUS could read and write by the age of three, their parents took them to MENSA to get them tested and they blew the test out of the water, nearing Einstein range.
Determined to give THE GENIUS a normal childhood though, their parents stocked a library and hired the best tutors they could while allowing them to attend their local elementary school. By age 11, THE GENIUS had finished 8th grade and was beginning high school, finishing that just as fast and looking onward to college. Honestly, THE GENIUS just wanted to get school out of the way so they could find something they enjoyed doing instead of being the freakishly smart kid. College was a breeze and for a bit of fun, they decided to take on medical school, finishing in two years by taking courses year-round and doing their medical internship in D.C.
Medicine kept them busy for a while but seeking another challenge, THE GENIUS picked up a Master’s in mechanical engineering and found a bit of joy in tinkering with things to make them work better. Their genius IQ had caught the attention of many agencies around the US and world but the only one they gave any interest back too was NASA. Capable of handling anything thrown at them, THE GENIUS sailed through astronaut training and began waiting for their chance to get a mission operation. They were useful to NASA though, solving problems that typically a flight surgeon wasn’t required to fix, giving the shrinks head exams for fun. They were a versatile weapon that NASA knew they were damn lucky to have.
The decision to assign THE GENIUS as the flight surgeon for Alpha Team was a constant back and forth. The flight director argued of their value while the NASA director argued they were too important to lose. Finally, it was settled when THE GENIUS’s name appeared as flight surgeon on the final twelve-man pick. This is their first venture into space and they know that their intelligence might turn off most people, the rest of this crew is far from most people. They’re ready to step up and help out where they are asked too. After all, it’s not every day a genius goes to Mars.

Everyone agreed that since THE SOLDIER came into this world kicking, screaming and covered in blood, they’d go out the exact same way. Born in Kansas to a farmer father and homemaker mother, THE SOLDIER hardly had a happy childhood. Their dad was a drunk that like to hit their mom and as a little kid, there wasn’t much that they could do to stop them. Of course, every time the beating stopped, THE SOLDIER would hurry over to her and try and help her feel better. They may have been little then but they wouldn’t stay little long.
By the time THE SOLDIER was 13, they were finally big enough and strong enough to their back. In one punch, THE SOLDIER put their father through a glass door and out of their lives for good. For a while they wondered if they’d actually manage to graduate with their low grades and time spent trying to take care of their mom. Then their mom met a good guy at church and suddenly THE SOLDIER had that weight lifted and was focused on getting into school somewhere. Turned out that somewhere was Tulane and a history degree had their name on it. Unsure about what to do next, THE SOLDIER joined the Navy and ended up operating a F/18 for four years. Something about THE SOLDIER intrigued the Navy and they sent them through astronaut training. However, THE SOLDIER’s big mouth kept getting them in trouble and despite their skill, after their one space trip, they was benched. Sick of the Navy and NASA, THE SOLDIER left and decided to go freelance. Freelance meant buying a single engine plane and letting people pay them to take ride. Really not the best use of their time.
When word of the Mars mission reached their ears, THE SOLDIER briefly thought about going and begging for another chance but passed on it. Instead, they bought a one-way ticket to Syria, got a new plane, got a partner and started flying over ISIS control with their new buddy shooting terrorists. Well that got back to NASA, the US Government and NATO just as quick. Stalled in the search for a second pilot who could handle the demands of a MARS mission, NASA requested THE SOLDIER come back and stop the Wild West Willy routine. Flying for NASA is a little more fun but part of them is missing the whole lack of authority they had until recently.

Everyone always said that THE SAVANT was so lucky to be born beautiful cause they’d never need to worry a day in their life. Every single time someone said that to THE SAVANT, they grew stronger in their course to crush everyone who underestimated them. Raised in a foster home after they were abandoned at a fire station, THE SAVANT didn’t have that picture perfect childhood that most children did but their foster parents were pretty decent at making them feel special every once in a while.
After their foster parents died in a car accident, THE SAVANT bounced from home to home, never really settling in one place. What they had going for them was their incredible smarts. They excelled in school, even if they were busy causing trouble in their free time. THE SAVANT never crossed a line they couldn’t jump right back over but they were flirting with a dangerous life. With the guidance of the only teacher THE SAVANT ever actually liked, they filled out the college applications and scholarships and waited. That waiting paid off when Princeton, Cornell, Georgia Tech and more came calling when their scores blew everyone else out of the water.
Turned out college was great for THE SAVANT and they found their calling in computer sciences. There was no program the school threw at them that they couldn’t re-code and make even better. Their undergrad years were spent garnering attention left, right and center from most tech companies and even a few government agencies. When it came time for their Master’s, they focused on debugging a lander that NASA had sent to the moon and firmly put themselves on NASA’s radar. The second they graduated, NASA came calling and calling hard. Not many in the organization could handle computing at the speed they did and THE SAVANT was a gift that could keep on giving.
Actually, becoming an astronaut was never in their game plan but after writing much of the code for the Project Ares, they were convinced to give the training program a shot. Turned out that they kind of kicked ass during the training and was the most promising candidate out of their group. THE SAVANT was picked off the bat as one of the system operators. They know they can do the job but the whole idea of space and depending on other people when their entire life it had only been theirs is going to be the real test for THE SAVANT. It’s either going to make one hell of a story or one hell of a bad day. They’re in either way.

Born to an American Air Force Major and a foreign hippie, THE FLYER spent their childhood roaming from country to country based on their father’s NATO assignment. While to the outside world Major FLYER was a hardass American with no sense of humor, to THE FLYER, he was the warmest and most loving father who couldn’t have supported them harder if he tried. And their mother? Well their mother never grew out of being a free love hippie. It would be tough to find a solid criticism against THE FLYER’s life.
At the age of 14, their family permanently settled in the United States so THE FLYER could attend an elite All-Boy/Girl’s College Preparatory. While most of the students there were already set on becoming lawyers and doctors as their families had planned for them, their parents made no such obligation and told them to follow their heart. Their heart lead their to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University despite offers from Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Brown. Turned out that most of THE FLYER’s favorite childhood memories were the ones where their father took their up in his plane and did barrel rolls. And if they could make a career out of flying? Well hell yeah they was going to do it.
Upon graduation, THE FLYER surprised their parents by announcing their intention to return to COUNTRY OF ORIGIN and apply for the Air Force. And just for kicks, they also announced they intended to become a fighter pilot. But like everything, their parents supported their and rooted for their. With ease, THE FLYER sailed through their initial training and was sent back to the US to attempt the NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program. It would have been stupid to bet against them since they graduated first in their class and began a prolific career as a fighter pilot. THE FLYER flew 14 combat missions overall, earning them the callsign of ‘Diablo’ for being the devil and raining hell.
THE FLYER had no intention of leaving the Air Force until the Prime Minister of COUNTRY OF ORIGIN sent them a personal letter asking their to step down and join the European Space Agency for all of COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. After finding out that their father had long tried to get NASA to recruit him, they said yes and began their training. Turned out that they liked going to space as much as they liked being in a fighter jet. After two missions with a Russian space crew through the ESA, THE FLYER was selected by the ESA to serve as one of two foreign astronauts for Project Ares. Going to Mars is slightly mind blowing but their entire life, THE FLYER has been knocking down barriers with no apologies and if someone is gonna pilot a spacecraft to Mars for the first time, it’s sure as hell gonna be them.

Doctors and nurses swear that when THE LEADER came out the womb, they came out yelling oohrah, a United States Marine Corp rally cry. As the child of a colonel and a grandchild of a general, again and again and again, the only thing THE LEADER ever really knew was the Marines. So from day one when they could walk and talk and plan, they planned to become the most prolific Marine officer in history.
It was actually quite plausible for THE LEADER to become so as at eighteen they entered the United States Naval Academy and began their quest for a commission. Four short years later with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, they picked it up and instantly began applying for the naval test pilot school. Three years later, they got those wings and a master’s from Stanford to make them more competitive as well. Three years into their official military career and already the brass had their eyes on them. When the Iraq and Afghanistan War broke out, THE LEADER became one of the first to fly combat missions in war.
The brass finally approached THE LEADER in the middle of the war to ask if they wanted to head back stateside and begin astronaut training as a candidate for the USMC. True to their nature and core, THE LEADER declined until their tour was over. Shortly after, THE LEADER began their training, aced it and was soon assigned their first mission with STS-122. Eventually they ranked up another three space excursions, a few more promotions and made sure that nothing stood in the way of their goal.
When it came time for the mission team for Project Ares, THE LEADER was unanimously nominated as the Commander for Alpha Team and Project Ares overall. This was what they had worked their ass off to achieve, to be the first person to lead a team to Mars. There is no doubt that every crew member trusts THE LEADER with their life and would follow any order given to them without hesitation. They are the leader Project Ares needs to succeed.

Some kids were just nerds. It happened all the time. How Xzavier Grant became one of them, well his parents still aren’t too sure. Born to Judge and an Ambassador, Xzavier grew up in the land of privilege and wealth, not that it ever got to him. Most of his childhood, Xzavier was in the dirt, digging and examining rocks for fun while the other boys played football or ninjas. Still, any time that ice cream truck came by, Xzavier would buy ice cream for every kid on the street and in turn, they’d listen to that little nerd talk about rocks for ten minutes then go back to playing.
Xzavier’s high school experience was capped by attending the prestigious old Easton Academy just as his father had done. They were a purebreed old money family but his parents had tried to adopt the new, modern way of thinking, so when Xzavier announced he’d be skipping out on joining rowing to start a rock club, they just shook their head and smiled. Honestly, he knew it was a little weird to be so gung ho about rocks but the science and history behind the earth just brought him happiness. It was rewarding to him to examine something so old and know the story behind it and the story of what it would become. Upon graduation, he politely declined Yale and Harvard and headed off to the University of Michigan to study rocks.
As ridiculous as it sounded, college was where Xzavier found himself, in large part thanks to the countless other geology nerds that surrounded him. After getting his bachelor’s, Xzavier opted to remain at the University of Michigan for his master’s and Ph.D, taking on a job as a researcher’s assistant as he did and leading two geology labs for the underclassman. When news broke of the Mars Mission, Xzavier finally used his family connections and asked his father to reach out to whatever NASA contacts he had to see if they’d interview Xzavier for the space program. If study earth and her evolution was cool, Mars would have been so much freaking better.
Thanks to those family hookups, Xzavier got a sit down with the Mars Mission Director and any doubt the guy had about Xzavier for calling in favors was gone. He knew his damn rocks. Knowing the value of having an geologist like Xzavier on board, he got pushed through astronaut training quickly and the moment he passed, was assigned to Project Ares. As the youngest member of the crew, Xzavier is a little overwhelmed by the whole space prospect and the fact that everyone around him is literally the best at what they do. He knows that once they get to the Red Planet, it’s gonna be his time to shine.

There is a thing with geniuses where it turns out, most of the time they don’t like have a sign on them labeling them as a genius. From the time she could talk, Lark Hannson was no different. Her father had immigrated to the United States after the fall of the Soviet Union. As a former Olympic Gold Medalist in Men’s Gymnastics, her father planned to get rich by opening a gym since everyone knew that without foreigners, the US Gymnastics program was finished. So growing up in a gym, Lark took to gymnastics but she didn’t nearly enjoy it as much as she enjoyed books. And after her mother abandoned their family, her father was dedicated to making sure Lark was happy, even if it meant books over back flips.
Lark still competed for her father’s gym every so often but at the age of 15, she quit completely to focus on school and managed to graduate from high school at 16. She had applied to a few colleges but when word came back from MIT that she was in, there was no decision to be made. While her father didn’t quite get why MIT was so great, the whole American Dream thing was something he bought into, after all it was why he had left the Soviet Union. Spending the next six years in school, Lark immersed herself in the environment, pushing supercomputers to their limit, inventing new math equations for fun. She had all the promise of a great success story.
And then Lark shocked them by taking her master’s and going to work for an app company that was famous for making those stupid fruit puzzle games. Even her father was perplexed by her choice in career but she just kept saying it made her happy. Turned out that her company office was right next to the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab and that in her free time she was breaking into the NASA mainframe and downloading whatever caught her fancy. Eventually, ashamed by how easy it was, Lark contacted NASA and told them their computer system sucked and to upgrade. Turned out the upgrade they had in mind was hiring her.
NASA wasn’t a bad place to work out, and programming computers to fly into outer space was actually pretty cool. However, Lark became a reluctant astronaut when her mission director submitted her name for Project Ares, arguing that since sending human to Mars and depending entirely on technology and computers to get them there was so dangerous, they needed Lark on board. All the gymnastics stuff helped since she had no problems with the physical stuff and even if Lark won’t admit it, she actually thinks getting to be the systems operator for the Mars mission is pretty badass.

Growing up all over the world, including stints in Gambia, Indonesia and Pakistan, Sydney Hopper was convinced Earth was the greatest place in the university. Her fathers, both medical doctors and attending a conference, had met in Sydney, Australia in the late 70’s. By the mid-80’s, right at the height of the AIDS epidemic and the fear that they’d never get to live a full life, a young female friend of theirs had fallen pregnant and didn’t want to raise the child. Hank and Parker Hopper decided that they’d take the child and raise him as their own, and thus entered Sydney Margaret Hopper, literally named for the city her fathers fell in love.
Unlike most children, Syd didn’t have the most normal experience. Both her parents worked for Doctors Without Borders and with the AIDS epidemic now hitting Africa, they took him along for the ride of a lifetime. Turned out that Syd took to medicine as quickly as her dads and was always around to help out. By the time she was 12, she knew she wanted to be a doctor. When it came time for high school, Syd returned to the US for the first time since her birth and moved in with her aunt in order to attend school. Working her ass off, Syd graduated valedictorian and headed off to Oregon State to begin her medical studies in the fall.
After graduating college, and doing her medical school and interning at John Hopkins, by the tender age of 29, Syd could finally tack on M.D. after her name. For a few months, she mulled joining Doctors Without Borders to join her fathers who were still with the organization until finally a position came up that intrigued Syd enough to take it; an in house doctor for NASA. At first it was dull work, checking out astronauts to make sure they could handle space, poking them with needles every so often but it gave him a unique chance. After only one year working there, Syd submitted himself for astronaut training and was surprised when she was picked to try the program. After showing she could handle it, NASA sent him up with a Russian mission and Syd fell in love with space.
Turns out that when planning an extended 15 months trip to Mars, doctors are actually needed in space. Selected for Project Ares, Syd knows that there is actually a bit of responsibility on him to keep both the team alive and to contribute beyond band-aids and painkillers. While on Mars, Syd knows she can make use of her chemistry skills and help break down whatever samples are needed. Hell, it’s a long time but that one trip up there was all Syd needed to be hooked.
