new york was meant to be the city of dreams for a young upstart like mason greene , but instead of hope & promise , he found nothing but heartache & disappointment. after constant rejection from tryouts & subjugating himself to an asshole of an abusive boyfriend , mason decides to finally stop sinking & start out fresh in a new city. unfortunately for the aspiring artist , mason had little prospects due to his less than stellar bank account. he didn't have a lot of options lined up for him , so he went to the next best place that he could barely afford ━━ gotham city. finding a cheap apartment doesn't take him long , even if it's in one of the more dangerous places in the city. still , anywhere was better than in his old shitty ny apartment , & at least here , he can truly restart his life again. a few try outs here & there leads him to playing at a few jazz clubs into the dead of night. eventually , an opportunity of a lifetime comes his way & somehow he manages to score it: a pianist for the gotham opera house. the job is just what he needs to really turn things around & he moves out of the dangerous area into something more manageable. soon , he is invited to play at his first gala & that's where he meets bruce wayne , the infamous prince of gotham.
as expected , bruce wayne is as charming & handsome as the pictures & stories portray. bruce immediately begins his attempts to woo the pianist , but having been through enough trouble with his last ex , mason wasn't really interested in anything casual , especially with a man with a reputation. because of their interwoven circles , mason & bruce would often see one another at events & shows. they become friends as they spend time & chat with one another , with bruce often trying to ask the pianist out to dinner & mason in turn gently rejecting him.
one night after a long rehearsal , mason his fellow orchestra players would attempt to leave the auditorium. they soon find that all the doors are shut & then smoke immediately covers the room , knocking everyone out in an instant. everyone wakes up to the joker & his gang having taken over the building , determined to have the orchastra & the actors perform a show based on his life , wanting to capture his legacy for people to remember him by. joker's thugs enforce his desires by roughing up many of the musicians , while harley quinn picks a few people from the crowd to be ❛ directed ❜ by joker personally. mason , unfortunately , was one of the lucky few chosen.
the stage actors are forced to do embarrassing things or face being killed by the joker , who not at all patient. the whole thing was being streamed to anyone who could watch , with the hope that batman would eventually make an appearance & help close out the show with a big bang. mason is forced to play upbeat , corny piano music at the request of the joker , but any mistake made by a nervous hand is met with ❛ discipline ❜ by joker's thugs , with harley instructing the men to avoid ❛ hurting the merchandise , ❜ ie , his hands & face. in the end , mason messes up so bad , he's actually slapped off his bench by the joker in a fit of frustration , & before he can end the show & mason's life in one fell swoop , batman steps in & puts a close to joker's play for good. everyone in the opera house survives & is rushed to gotham general , with many sustaining all sorts of wounds & horrendous trauma.
mason is knocked out cold towards the end of the whole debacle , waking up in the hospital without a clue where to go from here. does he give up on gotham , or keep on trying ? just when he thinks he's decided to up & leave this place , bruce wayne visits him in the hospital & things quickly change after that. mason becomes closer to bruce , who opens up to him a bit more , revealing a more true version of himself that the public doesn't see. overtime , their friendship becomes something much stronger after a while , & eventually there would be feelings that they both obviously share , but were too afraid to come to terms with or admit to.
not long after the construction of arkham city is announced , bruce would ask mason to move into his penthouse in the city since his apartment was in the area where the new arkham would be located. mason would move himself into the home & get even closer to bruce , who would pop in more often than ever before , leading to lots of heart to hearts , dinners & just enjoying each other's company. before they can become more , bruce reveals himself as batman. the truth does shock mason initially , but he would understand his reasons for keeping it all a secret & find a whole new admiration for the man he's begun to fall for. the two would decide to commit to trying something serious together & not longer after that , bruce would be dragged into arkham city after it's completion , forced to stop hugo strange & ra's al ghul plot once & for all.
the whole incident leaves mason absolutely terrified for bruce's life , but nothing could have prepared them for what happens next. upon learning that bruce is infected by joker's blood & on the brink of death , they talk about the future & mason soon becomes involved in the knightfall protocol. once the city was safe from scarecrow & bruce said his goodbyes to all his friends & allies , he would walk into the mansion with alfred in full view of reporters , which would later explode into a blaze of fire , all but confirming bruce's demise. mason would suddenly go missing as well & police would believe mason had run off or worse.
in reality , bruce , mason & alfred would have made it out alive & escaped the city they've come to know & love so well. they would move to a new , secluded location with more privacy & new identities , deciding to live a happier life from now on & to fully commit to one another while dick , tim & jason continue on carrying the batman legacy.
