Green house - Ben Lockwood
@abyssaliisâ asked:
"Did you have to use your nails?" Lovecraft almost sounds... concerned (or disappointed?) as he looks at the spot in question. It's a bit of a mess, really.
âYeah, wellââ He winces as his fingers lift to his neck, feeling the blood caked there. Thatâs messier than his normal work, for sure. Fingernails arenât nearly as effective as a knife, but... âGuy knocked my knife out of my hand. Didnât really have another choice.â
Despite the pain and the brutal self-inflicted gouging of the flesh of his neck, Steinbeck offers Lovecraft a warm little smileâitâs the specific smile reserved for his partner, comforting and sincere. ââve done worse.â His expression turns somewhat pensive. âUsed to do it like this all the time, actually.â With the grape vines gone, thereâs some fresh blood running down his neck again, staining the white of his shirt collar even more. (Thatâs a common occurrence, and the RV is well-stocked with peroxide per his maâs old trick.)
Torn skin and blood are also caked on and under his nails, but heâs undisturbed. âHurts a bit more than the knife, though." If heâs being honest.
âstageplay steinbeck tears into his neck with his fingernailsâ is what made me get muse back, what about it
Iâm what the kids call âan atrocity to godâ.
anyways thereâs probably a death parade verse incoming, despite the fact that almost no one knows about that anime
steinbeck was an arbiter but now works in the information bureau and is very chipper despite how fucked up and draining it is going through hundreds of humansâ memories an hour
useless agendas make a useless breed â all you can eat in a world of need. a discount price for all your good deeds; tell me, isnât that all you need?

abyssaliisâ:
âGood.â Heâs doing his best to quietly radiate approval. Not being very practiced at smiling is making this hard. Â
âMaybe I did. But having a reminder is nice.â
Itâs easy to tell when Lovecraft is in a good mood, smiling or notâto Steinbeck, at least, and heâs wholly relaxed with that knowledge.
âYeah? Hmm. Well, Iâll be here to remind you. Alright?â His blue eyes squint a bit as he grins reassuringly up at Lovecraft. Canât quite say always, but...
abyssaliisâ:
âPart of me wonders how you all got this far as a civilization. Iâm morbidly impressed.â He nods at Steinbeck. âItâs nice to see you, though.â
âI think the, uh, morbid impression is well-deserved.â Interesting word choice there, but apt.
A smile breaks through his thoughtful expression. âYeah. Nice to see you too, Lovecraft. Always is. But you probably knew that already.â
â as long as i have you by my side
is that the happy guild couple?
abyssaliisâ:
âSomeday Iâll learn not to see. And then I wonât have to know what certain people are up to.â
âYâknow... next time Iâll just trust your opinion and not bother lookinâ myself.â A pause, almost considerate. âHuh.â
Good boy (?)

ORSON Scott Card was known best simply as a cleanup guy. Simple, polite, professional, he would come in after anything went sideways just to fix the memories of bystanders, witnesses, and/or important figures whose opinions needed a little encouragement to change. He was not a fighter, and certainly he was not a grunt, dubbing himself far too important to be used for such menial work, but a leader? Him? Unlikely. His type simply wasnât cut out for it; he was far too temperamental.
Yet, when the time came to step up and gain further influence in the remnants, Cardâs time under Fitzgerald honing his ability was put to good use. It did not take any time at all for him to become a faction leader. Such a position, he learned, would require more than just a fancy ability to retain, though, especially as people donât seem to enjoy when one invades their headspace for personal gain. As such, he was stuck with what perhaps was his least favorite part of this new role: speaking to superiors about grievances.Â
Clearing his throat and glancing absentmindedly across the list in his hand, Orson spoke with detached coolness. â Mr. Steinbeck, sir, Do you happen to have a moment free? I need to discuss with you some issues among my division; if not addressed, it could lead to defectingâ neither of us want that, I believeâ so I suggest, in my so humble opinion, you not take these lightly. âÂ
Truth be told, Steinbeckâs not sure if heâs cut out for leadership at allâbut the thing he finds himself thinking every time his mind drifts in that direction is, Do I really have a choice? Picking up the remnants that Fitzgerald left behind, now the remnants that chose to stay away from him and his new Guild, was a daunting taskâis a daunting taskâand every passing day seems to add more weight to his shoulders.
And people... people have always been his weakness, too. Fights, violence, that sort of thing? That was easy. That was mechanical. But dealing with people when he feels so little connection to any of them...
The sound of a throat clearing catches his attention, and he offers a small, almost apologetic smile. âJust Steinbeck is fine.â But not John. Never John (for anyone, now). Storm blue eyes drop towards the paper Card holds in his hand before lifting back up to his eyes. âDo you want to sit down to discuss this?â
He nods to the seats beside themâaround the table used just a minutes before for a faction leader meeting.
