PROTO is a contemporary art gallery located in Hoboken, New Jersey presenting group shows of new art from well-known and emerging artists in all media. Exhibitions are assembled by gallery staff or guest curators, displayed in a 2500 sq. ft. space on the ground floor of the Neumann Leathers factory complex.

FORK IN THE ROAD

January 20, 2018 to February 27, 2018

FORK IN THE ROAD features recent paintings depicting flooded towns, distorted campgrounds, logged forests, and laboriously painted blurry images of trees. Unnatural colors, subtle patterns, and unexplained voids give the scenes a surreal sensibility. Human-made objects such as tents, telephone wires, decrepit vehicles, fences, or ropes make subtle appearances and act as metaphors for interpersonal relationships and psychological states. Our contentious attempt to control nature is suggested by these objects, but with little to no portrayal of figures, one is left to wonder what has happened to the human race. The environments appear simultaneously celebratory and post-apocalyptic, highlighting Hitchings’ interest in opposition, indulgence, and rationality. The exhibition title refers to our drive for adventure but inescapable need to make decisions based on reason.

Jen Hitchings investigates the significance of communication, camaraderie, perception, and memory in contemporary American culture, using painted images of places and events where people gather and interact. In 2017, her work appeared at PROTO Gallery in the WE LOST OUR TAILS group exhibition (curated by MEN Gallery, LES NYC) as well as in group exhibitions at The Wassaic Project, Geoffrey Young, Pierogi, and 86 Orchard Street, and several of her paintings were recently installed at Newark Liberty Airport. She also presented a large outdoor mural on the facade of Ideal Glass in New York City in summer 2017 and curated DEMAND CURVE at PROTO Gallery. She is a co-director at Transmitter in Brooklyn.

Project Studios is launching a new ceramics workspace at Neumann Leathers in Hoboken at 66 Willow Ave., right next to PROTO Gallery.

Primarily, the studio is intended for artists, and non-artists interested in ceramics, of all experience levels to use on a monthly-membership basis. Classes in wheel throwing and hand-building will be added to the program in fall of 2017. Fee-based firing for non-members is also available. The studio can be accessed 24/7 via a coded entry door.

The studio is located a few blocks from the Hoboken path station, an easy connection in lower Manhattan via various subway lines to wtc path, or from Brooklyn via the L to the 14th Street path station. The studio also has free parking for members on-site.

At this time, we are offering an introductory price of $150.00 per month with all firing fees waved for work created at the studio. Clay and glaze are byo or can be ordered via the studio. The studio has an array of unique custom and out-of-produciton glazes and custom clay bodies that members can purchase for use (or share) on a case-by-case basis.

AFTER NOON An installation by Sofia Quirno

AFTER NOON, unlike afternoon and very much like tomorrow, is a promise of something that is inevitable and yet never comes. It belongs to the mystical world, where what exists is that which can only be shown.   That is the world which Sofia Quirno’s works inhabit.

Inspired by the idea of the gallery space in continuous flux and the grid as the ultimate starting point to establish coordinates, the artist created a new multi-media installation for the inaugural exhibition at  M E N. The space, the work and the viewers are treated by Quirno as integral parts of the image, creating a constant tension between the limits and borders of the piece. The artist invites the visitors to immerse themselves in the experience, in the space where revelations are imminent, even if never attained.

Sofia Quirno was born in 1978 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied at the Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte in Buenos Aires, in 2006 and received her MFA from Parsons (The New School of Design) in 2015. She is a recipient of the Robert Sterling Clark fellowship, and the art residencies at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Vermont Studio Center and the Triangle Artists Workshop, NYC.   She lives and works in NYC.
