“but that’s neither here nor there” well where is it then.
“I hate getting shot.”
the storage bay was enormous. steel rafters disappeared into the darkness overhead, while forklifts sat abandoned between rows of pallets wrapped in cloudy plastic. the pulsing red lights throwing shadows across the bay. the moment he stepped inside, reno slowed down.
stop. take a beat. listen.
the alarms made that fucking harder. but err on the side of caution and assume the mark knew he was here - of course he did. moving between the stakes of crates, reno kept his sidearm low, eyes tracking the shadows the emergency lighting cast, quickly acclimitising himself to their routine so he could pick out any other movements in the bay.
nothing. no movement. but there was a sound; a barely-there rustle of fabric brushing against plastic to his left. a smirk tugged on the corner of his mouth as he spoke, voice lilting in a sing-song tone, ' c'mon, kennedy - you made it this far. don't tell me you're getting shy now? '
silence answered him. the turk continued forward - one aisle, then another. until he rounded a stack of containers and found leon standing thirty feet away. for a moment, neither of them moved, the red glare of the emergency lighting pulsed and washed over the concrete, chasing the shadows across the bay in a steady wave from the turk to leon.
and reno couldn't help himself.
' y'know, i'm startin' to think i mightn't have told you exactly what i do for work during our pillow-talk? '
lifting his handgun, the turk kept the a tight smirk on his lips as he levelled the sights and squeezed the trigger. the shot cracked through the warehouse and leon moved in that same beat.
the blaring alarms made it difficult, but reno knew his shot had found flesh - probably not where he'd wanted it to, given kennedy's attempt to dodge, the turk was willing to put his pay cheque on a grazing shot. but it'd still leave blood to track at least.
another shot rang out above the sirens and reno ducked on reflex, ' — fuck! ' the swear left his mouth on the foot of a laugh when reno's shoulder settled against the crate he'd sought cover behind. another shot and this time a round buried itself into the crate a few inches from his head, spraying him with splinters of wood.
' now that's just bein' rude. ' reno laughed into the cavernous bay, moving back further and repositioning himself - probably better to put some metal between him and leon, wood wasn't exactly known for his its bullet-proof qualities. dropping into cover behind a pallet of chemical drums, he checked his angles and listened again.
' i hate getting shot. '
the deadpan statement was enough to draw a bark of laughter from reno as he used the distance between them to check how many rounds he had left in his sidearm.
' — if it makes you feel any better, that wasn't my best shot. '

“Fight, goddamn it!”
“I hate getting shot.”
“This can’t be normal.”
“What about my rights?”
“You will not be forgiven.”
“Which way’s the shower?”
“You had to go be a dick…”
“I said, stay the fuck down.”
“You ask a lot of questions.”
“Somebody wants me dead…”
“Your body is not who you are.”
“You broke my goddamn nose!”
“Some people just need killing.”
“Let experience wash over you.”
“That’s gonna keep him a busy.”
“Who cares? We’re getting paid.”
“He had it coming. He was rude.”
“This enemy, you cannot defeat.”
“I’m not real. What’s your excuse?”
“Wow, you really stuck that landing.”
“My microwave is smarter than you.”
“Are you a moron or just an asshole?”
“Like I said, I’m not from around here.”
“I could find a way to arrest you for this.”
“What, you see through the walls, now?”
“Have you always been such an asshole?”
“How long… how long have I been down?”
“How do you decide who deserves to die?”
“Luck isn’t a word I’d associate with myself.”
“If I’d meant to die, I would, indeed, be dead.”
“Please don’t put me back in the dark, again!”
“If you do that, it won’t all go away… just you.”
“There’s more here than you’re willing to see.”
“Ignore your assumptions. Don’t trust anything.”
“There aren’t any people like me. Not anymore.”
“I don’t know how to be in this world without you.”
“So, along with everything else, you’re a coward.”
“How can I ease your journey through this world?”
“I could take you myself without even breaking a sweat.”
“The first thing you learn is that nothing is what it seems.”
“You’ll have to forgive my endlessly misplaced optimism.”
“We’re gonna have to sedate you if you don’t settle down.”
“Expect nothing. Only then can you be prepared for anything.”
“It was all monologue there for a while, so I kinda… tuned out.”
“So, this hasn’t been a conversation, it’s been an interrogation.”
“They have forgotten who and what we are… make them remember.”
“Close your goddamn mouth, or I’ll put a whole right through your head.”
“When you wake up, the world will not be what it was. And neither will you.”
“Little bit of this. Little bit of that. Blew some shit up and killed some people.”
“Is it true you can look into a person’s eyes and know exactly what they’re thinking?”
“One thing I can promise you: coming back from the dead is a bitch. Every single time.”
“So, avoid blunt force trauma to the base of the brain, and energy weapons fired at the head.”
“So, if someone doesn’t tell me what the fuck this is all about… I might very well lose my temper.”
“Don’t trust anything. What you see, what you hear, what people tell you, what you THINK you remember…”
“Depends on the day. Anything could set me off… interstellar dictatorship, genocide, people who talk too much.”
im so sexy and fun and fucking doomed
you need to understand that i have two sets of headcanons. there's the set of realistic headcanons based on my genuine reading of the show, and then there's me playing pretend with my dolls.
rereading a story you wrote yourself to satisfy ur own SPECIFIC thematic explorations and such
Luis frankly couldn’t afford to trust Reno fully just yet… the ache in his jaw, cheek and nose was far too present still yet. So, the Turk just got a ‘haha, no thanks’ look thrown his way.
“Hm.”, Luis hummed to Reno’s reply, “A safehouse from and used by the Turks solely? That sounds like the least safe place I could be in right now, if I am being honest, Hermano.”
Still, Luis didn’t stop his tinkering. Maybe it really was to keep his frayed nerves calm. Something to focus on. Because the world was tilting towards hell and shit.
“They’ll go try to find you here, won’t they? Your friends. Sooner or later. And they'd shoot me right between my eyes. I’m not stupid.”
That meant they needed to move. Soon. Luis wouldn’t risk for Reno’s colleagues to get the chance to catch up.
Then, Luis suddenly laid his tools to the side, instead resting his head on his hands, looking over to the other man with a grin. The adrenaline and trauma chasing each other through his system made him feel lightheaded.
“Oh? You know where all the skeletons are buried? What skeletons, too? Tell me, I already uncovered the worst secrets of this damn corporation, I thought. We will just make it a game, eh? You reveal one thing you know, I reveal one thing I found out.”
did luis raise a valid point? yep ... was he going to admit that aloud? hell no. mister-doctor was a variable right now, not a trained turk or soldier or operative, if reno admitted that there was a very real risk of one of his fellow turks tracking them and finding them, it'd just spook the guy more.
and right now they didn't need panic or anxiety. panic made people do stupid shit ... so did anger. point in case; his own current condition. he'd given into his anger and frustration and he'd dropped his guard long enough for luis to bury an injector into his thigh.
fingers tightening around the edge of the bed, reno shook his head, a white lie to try and assuage the other man's concerns, ' we've got time - they won't look for me straight away, they'll trust that i'm doing my job, ' try as he might, reno couldn't stop the snort that lodged in the back of his throat - gallows humour at its best.
he was second in command of the turks. if he went off-grid on a job, tseng would assume he was just cleaning house; getting rid of evidence or a problem - he had about a day until his grace period ran out. by then they'd have harvested the footage of him walking luis through the corridors and clocked that one of the vehicles were missing - and then the fun would start; who would tseng send after him?
glancing up when he heard luis' voice change, a tinge of excitement creeping into his tone and when the turk's eyes flitted to the other's face, he saw an actual fucking grin on the doctor's face.
' yeah ... we ain't there yet doc. we're at a truce alright, but i'm not about to go full whistle-blower - you keep digging and eventually the hole's gonna swallow you too. '
He wasn't sure how Reno'd take the revealation that he knew somethin' o' their lives before comin' to Lucis; the kid hadn't exactly been on the best o' terms with him lately. Let alone him bein' allowed some knowledge of their past.
But he didn't explode in a temper; that was a relief. Dave knew the other hunters' come back at the sound o' shoutin' on the haven an' he wanted to ahve this talk with the teenager 'fore they all bundled back into trucks in the mornin' for Meldacio.
"I know ya don't," the words were low, interrupted by the sound of the hunter pourin' two steaming mugs of instant coffee. Hnadin' one to Reno, Dave nodded slowly. He could see the boys were slowly becomin' part of the HQ's community over the last year an' a bit. It'd taken a few step backwards with Reno when he found out that he an' Ida weren't just friends, but he was getitn' through it. Hangin' around with others his age, one specifically.
"But yer mama's the one who'll decide what happens, not me or you." Ida had fled from Gralea to here, lost her husband along the way, thought she'd lost her boys too. He couldn't be selfish an' think she wouldn't move someplace else t'keep them safe. He would do it for Kimi.
"Which is why maybe yer the one who should tell her 'bout this, or both of us." Keepin' the magitek's actions a secret were a no-go, so maybe hearin' their two perspectives might help. He didn't know if it was a good idea or a bad one, but they had till mornin' to figure out a plan.
he took the cup from dave on reflex, the warmth of the coffee seeping into his hands through its metal. the teenager's mind kept replaying the altercation with the magitek, trying to slow it down and spot something - anything - he hadn't noticed yet. any detail that might help him figure out whether it was merely a case of the MTs being programmed to target hunters or whether it had registered him as a defector.
if it were the latter, surely there'd be soldiers dispatched? or airships flying over the locality? letting out a breath as he clutched to that straw, reno raised the cup of coffee to his lips and took a slow mouthful.
yeah ... yeah that made sense.
' both of us. ' reno answered a little too quickly, pointedly glancing up to meet dave's eyes, arching a brow to try and soften his words into a question.
truth be told, a part of reno still felt guilty about the last argument he'd had with his mother - he'd just walked in on her and dave and he'd said some pretty shitty things to her. if he landed back at meldacio with a story about MTs shooting at them, she might think it was an elaborate plan to make them move and snuff out whatever was starting between her and dave.
' if you're not there, she might think you're trying to keep it from her, same if i'm not there ... and well, uh ... yeah, i said some nasty things last time we talked. i don't want her to think this is about the same thing. '
He sat down after another pacin' route of the haven; good. Patience didn't come easy to Reno an' neither did calmness. He was more a knee-jerk reaction kinda youngster. An' that was completely understandable given what he was trained t'be. No time for sittin' an' thinking when yer cover might be bruned as a spy.
"Yer mama told me'bout that." Dave nodded slowly, again choosin' his words carefully. Ida an' his new level t'their relationship wasn't Reno's favourite thing, an' the hunter couldn't blame the boy for that neither.
But he had learned about the mech armour pilots an' how young those soldiers were chosen an' trained. Sounded horrific t'him.
"Seems t'have a chip on his shoulder against the hunters." An' Lucians as a whole if what he had heard from Vyv, Holly and Jeanne was true.
Levellin' a look at Reno, he let out a sigh an' his shoulders dropped. He hadn't wanted t'give away his full hand, but maybe the boy needed a bit of surin' up. Ida would need a whole lot more. But if she deicded t'move her boys elsewhere after this revealation, he couldn't blame her. She had t'do what was best for her kids.
Dave reached out an' moved the boilin' kettle off the campfire. "- I'll have a tak with yer mother. Ain't no one knows y'all're at Meldacio. I got some folks dotted around the continents with ears t'the ground. No word about yer family aside from passin' away durin' the sea crossing."
yer mama told me'bout that.
those words hit a chord inside the teenager, stilling the storm that had been swirling; dave knew. his mama had told him about it ... about a truth that few people in gralea had even known about. about the straw that had broke the chocobo's back - he had distance now, and reno could look back at their lives in gralea and understand that things had been mounting on his parents' shoulders.
they had been prisoners in a gilded cage.
reno understood now that his placement in the turks had been orchestrated to keep him out of the military, though he'd been too angry at the time to realise that. it had earned his parents a few years of space before they had been informed of loqi being enrolled in the magitek armour program ... and dave knew those truths too now.
flopping back into his camping seat fully, reno let out a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding. he listened to dave's words, his inner voice telling him to correct the hunter - to tell him that his boots on the ground wouldn't be much good when it came to spotting turks, to point out that there were already likely turks living in the crown city or dotted elsewhere across the mainland, but he didn't. instead, the teenager kept his gaze on the fire and spoke lowly.
' i don't want to move again. i ... i like living in meldacio. loqi's happy there - ma too. '
"I know," they had seen it time and time again, whether is was small settlements dotted around the continents or tiny contingents throughout Midgar. Someone said they could communicate with god, or the planet, or receiving some kind of sign from some kind of deity. And then shit went sideways.
"You can talke to the gods, but if they talk back then get yourself a doctor." The words were usually laughed out or said with some kind of humour, but Freya couldn't muster that as she sipped her coffee. It bothered her how little she could drag up on this new researcher too.
"- what about your mother?" The words were carefully picked and she glanced up to gauge Reno's expression; he didn't like his personal life being brought into work conversations. "She's the head of her department and would have had a say in who was hired ... maybe she knows more baout this guy than us?"
there was a very select number of people who could broach that subject with him - enough to count on one hand and still have a finger left over; veld, tseng, rude and her.
' i haven't spoke to her about it yet, ' reno answered after a few seconds, coffee mug in one hand and a twinge at the corner of his mouth that could have been half a grimace. he knew he had to talk to her about it sooner or later - there were samples going missing and it was her lab. but on the other hand, part him wanted to let it play out a little longer - to figure out where the leak was and seal it shut before it had a chance to involve his mother.
blowing out a breath, reno eyed the dregs left in his coffee mug before knocking it back, eyes flitting to freya as he poised a smirk.
' guess i'm gonna have to bite the bullet sooner or later ... was hopin' to figure out whether this new guy was the leak or not before i involved her. '
