Oh, scandalous… suppose I’ll just have to make my own assumptions, then. Are you poring over a beaker, or a magazine?
Won’t you make them, regardless of what I say.

Just yours~
What are you doing, anyway.
Nothing I could disclose to you, I’m sure.
dexteramortem
Did I! Damn. That’s what I’ve got you around for, isn’t it, you’ve always got my back. Thanks so much. Imagine if someone heard me talking so flagrantly about whores on the radio, I could lose my job.
If I didn’t know better I’d think you revelled in humiliation.

Broadcasting is an interesting way to put it. Wrong. But I can’t begrudge you your language skills, I’ve never seen you outside of work. Just admit you were lonely and eavesdropping, pervert~
I would sooner lose my hearing. I was merely suggesting you find some humility. You are aware you spoke aloud.

I don’t want to hear about disjointed priorities from You, Crane.
Perhaps, then, consider not broadcasting your escapades for the whole city to hear.
Fucking hell, how could I have spent so much at a fucking lounge in a month…
Lack of self restraint. Disjointed priorities.

A frown was fixed over Giovanni’s features; not out of the ordinary, but the shadow of doubt there might easily have been missed by the others in the room. Mere seconds had gone by since the drug had been administered, and already Lucas’ reaction was concerning. Giovanni’s suspicion that the drug could make the subject incoherent, unreliable, appeared increasingly likely. After a moment’s hesitation, he stepped towards the chair.
“Lucas.” The man released a sharp cry, his good eye so wide it seemed almost lidless, blood vessels standing out on it and tears streaming down his face. The other eye, the one that was swollen, was leaking thin blood. Lucas pressed back against the chair as far as he could as Giovanni drew closer, babbling pleas and bargains. “Lucas, are you listening to me?”
The man’s voice died down to a whimper behind his clenched teeth and he went rigid. His head was turned at an uncomfortable angle away from Giovanni. Giovanni bent slightly; not too close, he didn’t want to risk being bitten. “Tell me where the base is. Now.”
Crane caught the sight of Lucas’ fingernails curling into his palms and was struck by the feeling that they were watching constrain something trying to forcing its way out. Lucas grunted and seemed to be holding his tongue between his teeth, breathing harshly through them, colour drained from all but his swollen eye and wounds on his face and neck.
“Zone five--” he gasped eventually, blood smearing down his cheek as he pressed his face to the chair, oblivious to the pain in his eye. “Past--an hour past a gas station, another two from--” he choked on his words and retched, bile showing at the corners of his mouth. “From a hotel, i-it’s a w--a warehouse, used to--used t--”
He shook his head vigorously and retched again but swallowed hard enough to keep from vomiting. “Please don’t kill ‘em, please, whatever you want, I’ll do it if you--”
Behind him, Crane could hear the dracs whispering amongst each other, some of their voices quite animated, urgent as though Lucas’ words meant something. Saying nothing he kept watching, waiting for Giovanni’s reaction, the joints in his shoulders loosening and something bright blossoming in his chest. It was perfect. Lucas was alive, and coherant, and the worst of the unintended effects was really nothing at all--vomiting was quite a reasonable expectation.

Giovanni’s eyes moved from the injection site to the man’s face. A certain unusual intensity filled the room now; the few draculoids present were still and quiet as always, but they watched Ortiz with a new interest. Ortiz himself displayed a visible anxiety, but nothing unusual for the situation; he struggled against the belts holding his arms in place, his breath huffed out through his cheeks, rasping, his eyes flicked between Dr. Crane and his arm.
“What did you–fuckin’–”
Ortiz made a choked gargling sound, brows knit together as he frowned towards the floor. Then his eyes went wide and unfocused. His chest began to heave. The muscles visible in his neck and arms went taut. He slowly raised his head and gazed around the room with trepidation and then horror. He made a quiet whimpering noise and jerked abruptly at his restraints, arms twisting with no apparent regard for his injuries.
The dracs exchanged looks. Ortiz’s eyes fell finally on Giovanni and an unbridled terror filled his face as a scream tore out of him, filling the room. Then his eyes began darting everywhere, as if following the movements of many quick, invisible things at once. Hoarse cries and incoherent pleas ensued. Giovanni looked again to Crane.
"Everyone is affected differently," Crane said softly, tilting his head so Giovanni could hear over Lucas' cries, whilst keeping his eyes glued to him. "But he is hallucinating. Perhaps you could ask what he sees," he said, more like he was entertaining another's idea than suggesting it. "Though, he seems quite afraid of you. What was it you wanted to know? He's quite delirious, I assure you."
Blood was starting to blossom from Lucas' inflamed skin as he writhed and threw his limbs repeatedly against the restraints, uselessly thrashing against the chair and shrieking all the while, tears starting to follow the taut lines in his face. "Please!" His voice scraped against itself. "I'm sorry, I--fuck! I didn't know what to do, what else's I supposed to do, I--?!" He cut himself off with the wet and guttural sound of his own terrified screaming, every pause marking a new swolen tear in his throat. "There's nothin' I could do, I didn't wanna, I don't--! God, help me!"
As Lucas kept pleading, screaming and crying, Crane looked up to see the exterminator's reaction. "Try asking again."

“I’m glad to hear it. Even better if it’s true.” Giovanni turned slightly towards the closed door and lowered his voice minutely. “As I said in my email, the subject’s well-being isn’t a high priority, so long as his life isn’t wasted. The only thing you have to worry about, doctor, is wasting our time here.”
No sound emitted from the room as Giovanni swiped his key card and pushed the door open. He was taking a steep risk, he knew that. A ‘Crow squad had gone to a lot of trouble to bring this subject back, and the company would not be forgiving if he failed. If this experimental chemical rendered the subject a drooling twitching mess incapable of speech. They were already breathing down his neck more than he’d like, and the last thing he needed was to attract the company’s explicit displeasure right now.
Lucas Ortiz’s head swayed violently when Giovanni strode back into the room. The eye that wasn’t swollen shut tracked Crane behind him, his mouth gaping with his shallow breath. A draculoid closed the door again. Giovanni did not bother with introductions this time, and led Crane towards the back of the room to a steel counter. An armored case with an array of tools lay open on it, beside a steel sink and a flattened piece of bloodied gauze. A few teeth lay there with the roots still intact.
“I’d like you to explain how it’s administered. Please.” Giovanni gestured to a clear space on the counter and moved back slightly.
It was starkly different to where Anders had sent him -- though the floor was flecked with blood and some pooled beneath the chair, particularly where it seemed to have flown from crusted stumps where fingers used to be, it was nothing like having to walk through it, congealed. It was dried up around Lucas’ mouth and around one of his eyes, and was soaked into his clothes, staining them dark red and brown. It bubbled audibly in his throat when he tried to breathe and contrasted his pale face and neck.
Avoiding the puddles, Crane followed Giovanni to the back of the room and laid the briefcase flat on the counter. “Of course,” he said, unlocking then opening it. Inside were three syringes with needles fitted, all of them filled with the same brown, translucent liquid, along with a box of rubber gloves and a bottle of disinfectant.
Lucas watched, his eyebrows furrowing more than they already had from the pain. “What is it?” He croaked, voice low and hoarse. It seemed like he might have broken ribs, as he couldn’t breathe very deeply at all or evidently speak for very long. Crane didn’t acknowledge him or answer.
“It’s simple, like most other injections,” he said to Giovanni, rubbing disinfectant on his hands before pulling on a pair of gloves. He picked up and twisted Lucas’ arm within the restraints with little resistance to expose the inside of his forearm. The tattoos there were messy and healed badly, the skin over them scarred where the artist had been heavy-handed. A clear one towards his elbow showed three thick ‘X’s. Crane rubbed disinfectant over it and picked up a syringe, picking apart the plastic wrapped around it.
“As long as it enters a vein,” he said, pressing down gently to release the smallest amount of liquid, ridding the barrel of any air that might be trapped inside. “There should be no problem.”
“What is it?” Lucas attempted to demand but spoke and fought so weakly that he might as well have said nothing. He was ignored again, and Crane pushed the needle into a vein near his elbow, below the tattoo, injecting the entire contents of the barrel then quickly stepping back, dropping the syringe into the sink and watching closely, wide-eyed but otherwise unreadable.

“This way.” The drac gestured dispassionately again as he led the way down the hall. The light was not so purely white down here; there was a barely detectable yellow tinge. Cheaper light strips. Even lower down, they flickered chronically and sometimes there would be halls with several completely dead strips. A single roach lay twitching upside down near the baseboards as they slowed to a halt, the draculoid seeming to ignore it totally.
“I’ll get the Exterminator. Wait here, please.” he said even as he turned away from Crane to swipe a key card through a reader beside the windowless door. The door closed behind him with an echoing metallic shunk, leaving Crane alone in the corridor.
It was nearly five minutes later that the door heaved again. The draculoid from before did not emerge, but a much taller, darker clad man. Giovanni sighed through his nose as he closed the door tightly again and extended his hand.
“Dr. Crane, yes? I’m Giovanni Rossi, I’m overseeing the investigation here. I included a brief description in my email, but I doubt you needed it.” Giovanni did not muster any polite semblance of a smile, and his voice droned much like the draculoid’s had, only from ill-concealed exhaustion. The circles beneath his eyes were nearly black, and gave his eyes a terribly sunken, skull-ish look. Particularly with the way he stared unblinking back at Crane.
A second froze and extended before Crane nodded, took Giovanni’s hand and shook it. As far as it were possible he kept expression from his face despite Giovanni’s appearance, tall and thin, light strips casting dark shadows beneath his eyes and the bones under his skin. As though it wasn’t just the walls and lights decaying as you sunk to the bottom floor, but the people of the place as well.
Discomfort wrung his stomach and from it came a sudden thrill which brought the (ignored) urge to grin, cover his face and start beaming until it was gone. Which turned out not to be long after. “Yes, thank you,” he pushed up his glasses, yet again reminded they had to be fixed. “For your time. Though it shouldn’t take long.” His fingers tightened on the briefcase hanging by his side. “It never does.”
He checked his watch. Six minutes past seven.
"Doctor Crane?"
It was a question, but asked monotonously. Jonathan turned towards it and cleared his throat before answering, tightening his grip on the briefcase he held. "Yes."
Stepping back against the door behind him, the drac pushed it open and gestured lethargically through to the corridor it revealed, finding a way to stare vehemently whilst apathetic. "Right this way," he droned.
The hallway led to flights of stairs and two elevators, which the drac called for then stepped back and resumed watching Jonathan, as though he couldn't be seen in return. It was uncomfortable in a way that brought attention to the collar of his shirt touching the skin of his neck, itching to be adjusted, an urge Jonathan felt important to resist. If the unease was orchestrated, best not to give into it.
Ding.
As the sterility of the place already had, the smooth opening of the elevator doors jarred him without clear cause. It was strangely difficult to remember how he had imagined the inside of the building, having never before seen it, though he hadn't expected such dedication to keeping up appearances. He couldn't see it as a place often visited by anyone worth impressing.
Though, three floors down, the doors slid open to reveal a similar corridor with some subtle differences that seemed to hint towards a hierachy correlating with the levels' depth. A chipped tile, a black mark where a rubber sole might have scuffed the floor. Just enough to give off the impression that the further down you went, the worse it may look.
