Kinect 1473 issue
Getting the newer kinect 1473 to work (is a pain in the)
So here are some vital links to get the newer kinect version to run with librefreenect, openni, kinect a etc. at least as far as i know. it all is based on minimum open ni version 1.5.something.

End of 2013, a very forward thinking ad-campaign for UN WOMEN created by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai succeeded in bringing widespread attention to the issue of women's rights, gender equality and the deep rooted sexism in today's society, by utilizing and visualizing the very recognizable google auto complete search function in regard to the positio of and attitudes towards women today (based on search terms dated March 9, 2013).
Attempting a typology of moving image formats which might be and are used to project or develope issues of int. political/current affairs, regardless on if content is handled in indirect, direct, subversive, goal oriented, random, informative, artistic or pedagogical manner and for which exact reason or purpose to topic was chosen. maybe it does not need to be the most direct and obvious, to the point way, to carry a message or issue to reach a particular audience. the planned work is showing different approaches in various moving image media and motivational contexts and 'unrelated' perspectives or motion image media formats and how these possibly carry/handle a general theme of one particular current affairs topic. A multitude of ways to carry/approach a broad content.. demonstrated in an immersive, reactive video installation – which tries to highlight the various existing media representations that exist to 'sell' polit. content, points of view or that are generellay used to portray polit. phenomena.
some preliminary design and layout specifications for a front and a back projection setup of the installation. here working with two projectors and in the scenario of utilizing the fhnw hgk building facades.
After having tried out a bunch of different options in regard to projection mapping and maxmsp, I got the Madmapper external to work. map your heart out.

Bruno Latour on Art, Politics and Religion.
In regard to his most recent œuvre An Inquiry into the Modes of Existence, and his interest in the intersection of different scientific disciplines, here regarding Politics, Religion and Art, a commentary & paper by critical/cultural theorist Bruno Latour – Two Lessons from an Old Imam, which was published in Le Monde [read article as pdf], highlights exactly this interrelation, here referencing particularly Abderrahmane Sissako's Timbuktu (2014).
Latour is also the initiator and director of the Sciences Po programme École/ Experimentations en Arts et Politique (SPEAP).
Timbuktu (2014) by Abderrahmane Sissako.
A film in which Timbuktu is under the occupation of Islamists bearing the flag of ISIL. Throughout the film there are subsidiary scenes showing the reaction of the (muslim) population to Islamists' rule, which they view as absurd, including the opinion of an old Imam. The film also hints at the failure of the Islamist occupiers to live up to their own rules. [Watch excerpt via youtube]
MAX sending messages via network
When setting up multiple camera/image analysis/interpretation inputs in combination with a multiscreen and parallel video playback projection set up, i need multiple computers to distribute the tasks to, for the installation to work. some potential solutions include maxhole (although likely outdated und maybe less reliable) and other network solutions integrated in max, or even quintet.
however i will also need to test in which way the interpretation of footage and sending of input, and running max in general functions, using different operating systems.

patch, software and hardware tests with glued videos distributed in matrix. anticipated with various different videos distributed in matrix and same reaction clip for all, however had to be reduced to only one video multiplied in matrix with same reaction clip. different video inputs and face recognition trigger to different/reaction video input to some parts of the video output.
tests made with different matrix settings, various video input and reaction clips.
specifications: Max/MSP 7, FaceOSC, Camera, 3 Screen Set up with Matrox Triple head. (for projection need to use video mapping extensions, f.i. MadMapper)
several issues: processor capacity to play multiple different video files at a time and in a glued matrix whilst running face recognition triggerresolution; low resolution video only; differences of resolutions and video codecs for glued matrix.
lessons and steps to look into: min. 2 or 3 computers needed, with better processors and video capacity. how to play high res video input at the same time and in matrix, potentially feed via VLC/Quicktime and Madmapper instead of gluedmatrix. use maxhole to send input from diff computers on same network. need for multiple cameras or wide angle cam, or kinect with synapse or kinect eye to recognize the exact position of ppl instead of eye/faces. also, design/ video clip wise, and reaction clip, some further variations need to be created as it is still suboptimal, and does not create the desired vis effect.

"Ahead of the British general election on May 7th, Game of Thrones anarchist-in-chief – and first-time voter – Maisie Williams has a message for the youth of today." A very effectful campaign, addressing the generation selfie - not to sell a political position - but to vote! Watching this video made me rethink the concept of my research and installation, into a possible campaign style direction. decisions to be taken soon.
Disinformation and Propaganda today
Disinformation and Propaganda today
A recent commentary published by Chris Morris of BBC Europe, brought up one interesting distinction, or rather denomination to the topic of propaganda in the 21st century. As connected to my research interest of political representation, communication and media, this is quite fascinating. Where is the difference between propaganda and disinformation, or is the latter simply a less value loaded term for the former? Either way, it is very interesting to see how for a very long time, the Kremlin has stepped up its strategic disinformation and propaganda campaigns, particularly in regard to the events in the Crimean region.
The 'EU strategic communication responding to propaganda "non-paper"' signed by four EU Foreign Affairs Ministers – Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania and the UK – highlights the strategic and increased developments in regard to the Russian governments disinformation and propaganda campaigns and the central role and responsibility for the EU.
The communiqué focuses on four aspects of advised EU action, Awareness, Assertiveness, Alternatives and Accountability, providing guidlines and the basis for legal and political action against the strategic attempt to spreading disinformation.
Here two examples include an extensive three hours 'documentary' broadcast by the Russian TV on the 'annexation' or inclusion of Crimea; or the more blatant attempt at trying to discredit NATO satellite imagery as 'fake' and propaganda campaign against Russia in a widely broadcast 'information session', which actually gave evidence of an increase of troops at the Russia – Ukraine border, and the disregard of that particular boarder by some of those stationed troops. However, the russian officials response to this attempted to discredit this factual imagery as an old satellite image, from roighly six months prior. The list of incidences goes on and on. In any case, no matter if it is called disinformation or propaganda – acknoledging that there is a difference – it is definitely time for the EU to have taken pro active measures, which has now happened. And I hope more countries will join the effort to curb the spread of malinformation, disinformation and outright propaganda and raise awareness against their strategic use by any entity (a more detailed article to follow soon on mag.crrrnt.com)
