"I closed my eyes & lay still, and envisioned everyone I've ever met laughing in a brightly lit house, grazing each other's cheeks with their hands, while I watched from far away in the cold, slowly evaporating into air."
Nicolette Polek, Bitter Water Opera, p. 45

Young girl’s gymnasium suit with fencing waist, Harper’s Bazaar- 1905
"A most present thing occurred, like a flare, all flame, from all sides. A presence shook me; it was strong and wild, shattering enough to place at the front of something.
There on the flat expanse, surrounded by brutal rising mountains, I was awash in what felt like a mix of terror & grace. I became small & unnoticeable, but it was a smallness where something wonderful surged around me. The smaller I became, the more I could see it. Like a fractaling reveal, tying my days together with a single thread. I crinkled down onto the sand.
I felt the squint that happens when one is staring directly into the sun, but it was my entire body squinting at love.
After a long moment, I walked, soundlessly, across the flat ground back to my car. I drove slow through the mountains with the windows open.
I was surrounded by emptiness, and didn't wish to fill it.
I ambled back into the lobby, flush-faced. The shock turned to ecstatic giddiness. Who could I tell this to? I thought. God's touch! Everything else in comparison was gray-washed. The mycelium of heaven, beneath everything making small plush things grow from din."
Nicolette Polek, Bitter Water Opera, p. 101
