ELLE rolled her eyes. those people were always the worst ; however she never considered throwing them in front of the bus. she was more likely to just publicly shame them more than anything else. “ ah , well that could be a different story , ” she mused. “ if he doesn’t think anyone tripped him , you could be in the clear. that’s for his and the vehicles insurance to deal with … i think. ” she wasn’t so knowledgeable about the latter part of her comment. she waved it off. “ however , if he catches onto you , or anyone , trying to trip him ; the former charges still apply. you could maybe play it off as an accident , but you better hope there’s no witnesses. or traffic cams. ”

“ okay, change of plan... ” janis paused, thinking about what would be the best course of action in order to not get caught in this hypothetical. it was a good thing elle was going along with it, because she could already feel her anger at the situation dissipating. “ the old banana peel trick, maybe ?? someone else drops one and he slips on it and falls in the street ?? ” she laughed a bit, shaking her head. “ okay, i’m calm now. thanks for entertaining that and not thinking i’m crazy. ” janis leaned back in her chair, smiling. “ how’re you ?? ”

          SIGHING AS HE WATCHED janis clean up, cliff leaned against the wall to their right, “hopefully none of your shit got ruined, i remember when my sister spilled a soda on one of my amps….shit sucks. but, i survived or whatever, if that’s any help?” he explained before kneeling down, helping take over once janis looked defeated, “yeah? tell me about it, i’m all ears.” cliff offered, picking up the drenched sketchpads and placing them on the counter behind him, “unless you have somewhere else to be?”

“ it’s not entirely ruined... ” at least, she hoped so. it was hard to tell when the book was still dripping. and even as she said it, her voice was filled with disappointment and doubt, as if she were convincing herself and not him. she chuckled at the story, shaking her head as she stood up, looking at the pile of drenched books on the counter. “ no, nowhere to be. just... it feels like the whole fuckin’ universe is against me today. missed my bus so i missed this big meeting with a gallery who were going to show a few of my pieces but now i bet that’s down the drain, then this... ”

Cady knew Janis meant well. Teasing was just the way they showed affection. It was one of the first things Cady had noticed about Janis, that they never sugarcoated the truth or lied to make anyone feel better. “Well, maybe….it would have to be a really cool fact.” She explained, biting her bottom lip to keep herself from smiling too much. Yet as Janis’ request, Cady pulled out her phone and flipped through to Matt’s bumble profile. “Cute, right? With his little glasses and curly hair.” She sighed, unable to stop the grin now. It had been a while since she’d been on a date, she would be lying if she said she weren’t excited. A little nervous, sure, but mostly excited. “I take it back, he’s definitely not a serial killer. I’ve looked death in the face on more than one occasion, I’d recognize a killer if I saw them.”

they just laughed again, shaking their head. really, they were excited for cady -- she hadn’t been excited about a date in a while, and seeing her this excited and happy made her happy too. one of the few things janis wanted in this world was to see her best friend unbelievably happy. “ i mean, as cute as a straight guy can be to a nonbinary lesbian. ” they shrugged, grinning back as they chuckled. “ i’m kidding. he’s adorable, cady... just don’t fall too quick, yeah ?? i don’t wanna have to beat some guy for being reckless with you. ” it was just the truth, really. if anyone were to hurt their best friend, they’d some to her defense without hesitation.

ELLE’s jaw nearly dropped at his assumption. she did not simply glide through law school , especially in the beginning. “ yes , yes i was , ” she admitted. “ but i worked hard for that !! you wouldn’t believe how much i had to study !! ” she was proud of herself for what she achieved. she earned it. “ i wouldn’t have even passed my first law class or gotten my first internship if not for my … ” she hesitated for a second. “ for my ta. ” obviously emmett was more than just her ta , but … that wasn’t relevant right now. no need to dig up those feelings. thankfully , she couldn’t linger too long at the thought as josh began to look around the room for her sisters. “ you’ve met some ! ” she reminded with a laugh. “ my sorority sisters , to be clear … surely , you’ve met my girls in delta nu !!! ”

he laughed a bit, nodding as they got to the kitchen and grabbed a beer for himself. “ okay, okay, so i overestimated you... is that a bad thing ?? ” he grinned, leaning against the counter as he cracked it open. “ yeah, i wouldn’t have passed without my... ” he also paused, letting out a little laugh. “ my almost step father. ” which didn’t fully convey everything -- the guy was the closest thing to a father he’d ever had, but it was too much to get into at a party. the realization dawned on him as he took a sip of his beer, trying to hide the shocked look as he laughed. “ i knew that !! ” he covered, shaking his head. of course he knew delta nu girls -- his ex being one of them. “ but i still wanna meet the ones i don’t know. ”

Bianca Stratford had her eye on something. A most beautiful something she could never have. Bianca was hardly the type of girl to want for anything, and yet here she was gazing wistfully at the thing just out of reach. It wasn’t fair at all. The blueberry scone in the glass counter of the juice bar she frequented in West Hollywood seemed to call out her name. But the calories and carbs were not in her diet plan at the moment. Bianca unhappily reminded herself of this fact as she slurped down the green smoothie she had ordered herself, trying to fool herself into thinking that the smoothing tasted just as good as the blueberry scone would. She was starting and concentrating so hard on this, in fact, she didn’t notice someone lingering in the corner of the juice bar.

matt had also been eyeing the scone for some time now. after he’d seen it ( of course, after he’d already gotten his smoothie ) it was all he could seem to think about, but he didn’t really want to make a second purchase. he sighed before seeing someone else eyeing it just as hard as he had been, and glanced at it once more before speaking up. “ hey, uh... are you gonna buy that ?? because i kinda want it but it’s the last one and i don’t really wanna do another charge on my card, so if you do could you do it quick ?? i can feel my resolve crumbling. ”

“Tapioca.” Duke tested the word out slowly, nodding when it seemed to click with the images in his mind. Well, really, he thought of tapioca pudding, but the flavor at least seemed to match up enough that it sounded more right than tamagotchi. “Yeah alright. Show me the way.” It might have been presumptuous to assume, but Duke nudged the other guy on the shoulder, indicating that he could start walking.

he couldn’t help but grin as the other said the word, letting out a soft chuckle. matt hesitated before nodding, standing with his camera bag slung over his shoulder. he hadn’t really planned on going for boba today, but he craved it now that the other had brought it up. starting to walk, matt held a hand out for him. “ i’m matt, by the way. i got some cool shots of you during the game if you wanna see them later. ”

Jenna could feel her lips pulling back into a smile. Though there was a small part of her that noted how dangerous it could be, another part of her (the child in her) started imagining just how beautiful it could be. The christmas lights shone through the scaffolding, a faint twinkle matching the one in Jenna’s eyes. “Okay, okay, but-” She held up a finger, her eyes already calculating how easy it would be to climb up there. “We go together.” Her lips pulled back into an even wider grin. “It’ll be an adventure, of which you’ll have photographic proof and I’ll have a new post for my instagram.”

“ i knew there was a reason we’ve been friends all these years. ” he laughed a little, nodding at her words. in all their years as friends ( of which there were many ) jenna was there for every stupid thing he did for a good photo ( of which there were even more ). they stuck together through everything, even this, so matt held an arm out for her to take before leading the way to the gate, eyeing the padlock on it. “ scale the gate, or try to pick it ?? ” he asked, raising an eyebrow in question.

he grinned when the other agreed with him, nodding a bit while looking over the scaffolding. matt was definitely the kind of person who was willing to go the extra mile for his art, and having one person justify it with the same logic made him feel even better about his decision. “ yes !! it’ll be easy enough, i’m sure of it. ” he shrugged a bit, walking over to the gate. how hard could it be to climb up and get a few pictures ?? he pulled it open, looking around for a way to start their journey upwards. “ okay, let’s do this. ”

ELLE followed the photographer’s line of sight. she examined the construction site. it was probably safe. ( not entirely legal , but he could probably get away with it. she’d seen drunk boys get away with stupider things. ) she turned to look at the aforementioned lights. “ that’s really up to me , ” she mused. “ cause … i’m sure not helping you much. not in these heels at least , ” she pointed to her shoes. pumps belonged no where near a construction site after all. plus , she wasn’t about to put herself at risk. “ do you really want the picture that bad ??? ”

“ oh i wouldn’t need help, ” matt grinned at the blonde, hands in his pockets. “ just some free legal advice. ” he laughed a bit, studying how safe it was and the pros and cons of climbing for some pictures. he’d done worse before, really, and it’d make for some cool christmas stuff at the very least. “ it’d look cool. ” he justified, shrugging before looking at elle again. “ i could take yours, too !! could be a cool christmas card if nothing else ?? ” he offered, clearly excited about the whole idea already. once he got like this, there was hardly any stopping him.

“What can I say? I got mad schquillz.” Cady shot back, smoothing out her hands in the air in a move worthy of the one and only Kevin G. She grinned back, confident until she realized that Matt had no idea who who was emulating. A faint blush tinted her cheeks as she quickly motioned to the camera around his neck. “Great! You brought your camera. I’ve always wanted to see some nice pictures of all my favorites. My phone camera is fine, but these animals are so gorgeous, it doesn’t do them justice.” Cady explained as she led Matt through the front gates, flashing her membership card as they did so. But the front gate attendants already seemed to know Cady, waving her through without a second glance. “Any requests for our first stop? The Cady Heron zoo tour experience is entirely tailorable to your own personal preference.”

matt smiled fondly at her, letting out a soft chuckle at her joke -- which, admittedly, went over his head, but it was still cute to him regardless. she seemed to just want to move past it ( even though he partially wanted to ask about it ) so he just nodded and looked down at the camera. “ yeah !! i tend to bring it everywhere... you tell me which animals you want pictures of and i’ll make sure to take the best ones. ” he grinned, following along through the gates. it’d been a while since he’d last been to the zoo, which was part of why he’d suggested it, and stopped to take in the greenery past the gates. he hummed for a moment, considering what would be the best way to start. “ what’s your favorite to start with ?? ” he asked, turning to her with a smile.

“Janis!” Cady giggled, blushing at her friend’s words. “It’s just the zoo, and a first date. During the day. Hardly any time for any sort of…panty dropping.” She grinned, whispering the last words as they passed a group of older women on the street. Still, Cady could barely keep a laugh down. “And I don’t even know this guy. He could be a serial killer for all I know. I mean, he’s actually super sweet, but so was Ted Bundy.” She pointed out, making a mental note to plan True Crime documentary night with Janis soon. “His name is Matt. He’s a photographer for a magazine. We were both on Bumble, so this is kind of the first time we’re meeting?” Cady explained, hoping they didn’t think it weird. “But it’s 2020! That’s how everyone is meeting, right?”

janis looked at cady over the top of their sunglasses, grinning brightly. if there was one thing janis loved in this world, it was the chance to tease her friends. “ you can’t trick me, cady. i know you. he’ll make some comment about a lion and you’ll be ready to pounce. ” she made fake claws with her hands before laughing, shaking her head. “ i think serial killers stopped going the route of dating apps like, seven years ago. they all get caught too easily and moved on to just drugging and kidnapping, like the old days. ” it was half a joke and half an attempt at reassuring cady that this was going to be good. “ definitely not weird. artsy or classist and dick-ish, maybe. jury’s still out on slightly creepy. show me a picture. ”

it had been a rough day for gretchen, after an argument with her mother over the phone - her mood was well and truly shot so she had decided to go shopping and see if that would help her forget for a little while. lost in her thoughts as she gazed at some converse through the store glass, hearing her name made the brunette turn to face the voice. “ janis ? oh hey.. i wasn’t expecting to see you here. uh, i’ve lived here for the past three years. ”

“ wow. small world. ” janis blinked, arms crossing in front of her. it wasn’t that she didn’t like gretchen -- there wasn’t enough to form a true opinion post-regina other than both of them knowing what she could be like. so janis said hi, but the shock of this run-in had her stopping and actually wondering about her. “ how are you ?? it’s been... fuck, a while. ” not that she kept up with her, nor expected the opposite. “ cady’s out here, too. i guess everyone wanted out of that bumfuck town. ”

ELLE rolled her eyes before a small grin formed on her lips. she briefly looked up from the magazine in her hands to glance at janis. “ and who did what now ? ” her tone was mildly playful , as if already entertained with the possible answer. “ it could depend … ” she pursed her lips as she considered the question. “ it could range from reckless endangerment or assault to … manslaughter ? maybe even second - degree murder ? ” her tone was unsure. it was all in theory , after all. “ it depends on what harm comes to the victim and / or the vehicle. ”

“ idiot walking slow on the sidewalk on the phone ignoring the fact he was walking in the dead middle and no one could get by. ” janis said simply with a small huff. it was annoying as hell, and clearly the guy didn’t care about the others around him. “ okay, what if he tripped and just so happened to land in front of a speeding bus ?? then it’s an accident and no one actually gets charged, right ?? ” she was completely joking, and a small grin showed that fact, but it was also an excuse to hear elle talk about legal things, something janis loved about her friend -- they could have actual intelligent conversations, as opposed to ninety percent of the population in L.A.

          WHILE THINGS MAY HAVE gotten off on the wrong foot, it seemed, nothing eased the tension like a mutual connection. at least, from past experiences in her life, it never seemed to fail. “she’s the best! i met her because i needed a tutor for my algebra classes, i’ve never been great with numbers but, we hit it off. i remember on halloween we were talking and she told me about you, it’s nice to meet you finally in a more formal-ish way. sorry about using your window, i really didn’t think anyone was in there. lighting inside of stores is statistically made to alter colors, i just wanted to make sure it was correct.”

janis drummed her fingers on the steering wheel as cher talked. maybe she’d misjudged her -- she had a tendency to do that sort of thing, but when someone was blonde and seemingly fashion forward, her fight or flight was triggered. but if she was friends with cady... “ oh yeah, she’s a math wiz. i would’ve failed in high school if not for her. ” she stuck her hand out to shake cher’s, smiling a little. “ nice to formal-ish-ly meet you. ” she laughed a bit, nodding. “ i get it, they do the same thing for art supplied. the amount of times i’ve bought paint and it been three shades off from what i need is fucking ridiculous. ”

      “WELL DAMN, THAT’S gotta suck…” he mused, seeing the mess before sighing and glancing around before spotting a nearby outdoor table with napkins on top of it. grabbing a bunch, he handed them to janis with a shake of his head, “i mean, we’ve all had those days, life can be a fucking bitch that’s for sure.” cliff huffed out, kneeling down to help clean up some of the stuff they lost, “you all good though? that fall looked a little nasty.”

“ utterly. ” janis grumbled, accepting the napkins and dabbing at the ruined sketchbook in hopes of saving at least a little bit of it. it didn’t seem like it was any good, but they still tried with false hope. “ yeah, i’m fine, been through a lot worse than that. ” they huffed a bit, stripping off the jacket before sitting back and just looking at the ruin. “ it’s just been one of those fucking days, y’know ?? thanks for the help. ”

Whoa, now Cady knew Janis was excited. They’d hardly been a sentimental person, but Cady couldn’t help but feel a rush of happiness at the artist’s words. She’d really been without Janis for much too long. Between hanging out with Janis again and going to the zoo, Saturday was shaping up to be a pretty good day. “I know, right? At first I was gonna say no, because I’m so busy and everything, but it was his idea to go to the zoo Janis. His. Idea.” Cady hardly fell for people as hard as she used to anymore, but the zoo had a special magic all it’s own. “But don’t worry, I have my usual route I take around so I estimate I’ll be out with at least two and a half hours before we need to be there.” She promised them, looking proud of herself. 

“ okay, cady, don’t drop your panties just yet. ” janis grinned at their best friend’s excitement. it’d been a while since the last time she’d seen cady this taken with a guy -- probably aaron, really, and janis would be the first to admit they were disappointed with the outcome of that situation. but it was nice to see her excited like this, and if he was the one suggesting the zoo, no doubt they’d be a match made in heaven. “ cady, take your time and enjoy yourself !! i’m off saturday so i’ll just be here, just come by when you’re done and we can get ready together here or something. ” janis shrugged. they both had things exciting them now, and it was a great feeling. “ okay, pictures, tell me about this guy who’s somehow both dumb enough and smart enough to suggest the zoo for a first date. ”
