“We don’t have a car, you realize. And we - there are sort of a lot of us,” Irma said awkwardly.
Phoebe continued, “So we don’t fit in most cars unless we’re really packed like sardines. Or someone hiding down on the floor, I guess, it depends.”
“It doesn’t sound like a lot of fun,” Sophie said dubiously.
Kitty smiled softly. “Oh don’t worry about that. There’s a bus that can take us. But only if you want to.” She shrugged lightly. “Whenever you want to.” She laughed softly at the the comment.
“The name is definitely off putting.” She sighed. “But I promise you it’s not so bad.”
“Yes, I am new here,” Laura confirmed. “Is that obvious?”
Kitty waved at the girl. “Hey. No it’s not too obvious. I mean this place is huge so everyone looks a little lost sometime. I’m Katherine but you can call me Kitty.”
“Yeah, that’s the problem with you pretty girls,” Tabitha replied with a cheeky smirk. “The funny feeling is the mask saying ‘da’fuck do you want from me? You’re already stunning’”
She felt the warmth rising in her cheeks at Tabitha’s comments. “You’re so charming, my goodness.” She shook her head and looked into the mirror. “But you’re the pretty one here. If anything the mask is saying ‘How dare you think you’re worthy of me?’ She giggled.
“We asked a man in the kitchens but all he had was already brewed and it had gone cold,” Phoebe sighed. Either he was holding out on them with the better product or he had very peculiar tastes.
“We’re not that pressed about it, don’t worry,” said Irma.
“We’re far more concerned with our prospects of passing this Danger Room class. The name does not inspire confidence,” Sophie said.
“Ew.” She shook her head and sighed. “I feel like you can do better. There has to be something. Maybe town. We should go sometime and see if we can find some decent tea around here.”
She flashed Sophie a soft smile. “It’s intimidating at first, I won’t lie but once you get accustomed, it’s actually a lot of fun.”
“Ugh. Tabi....is this face mask supposed to feel this weird? I feel like my face is going to melt off!” She grinned. “Fineeee I’m exaggerating but still, it feels weird. How do girls do this all the time?”
“We’d be a visually striking chorus line but we haven’t got the pipes to manage it in the long term,” Irma sighed, leaning back in her seat and staring up at the ceiling.
“We’re fine,” said Phoebe blankly.
“Why wouldn’t we be?” Esme asked.
“Just because you lot are a bit weird about things like dumping too much sugar in your tea doesn’t mean we can’t cope,” Celeste agreed. “And putting the month before the day when you write the date, that’s just frigging weird you know.”
“You girls would definitely make a beautiful chorus, I agree.” She giggled. “I can back you up with my guitar?”
Kitty smirked as Celeste went out. “I don’t really understand the sugar thing either actually. Hey, have you been able to find some decent tea?”
✵ For someone who considered himself so easygoing and unpredictable Jono’s face turned rather confused. What? Was this now? Just like that? Of course, it was not as if he had any better place to be, or something else to do. He tried to look cooler about it as they started to walk. He kept his phone on his hand, although typing and walking wasn’t the best combination, but it was not like he was driving and texting anyway. He wasn’t going to let this end the most meaningful conversation he could have with someone (to his standards).
╓
Picking up just one is hard.
Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones. U?
╜
Kitty walked beside Jono, holding her textbooks close to her chest and looking over to him as he typed. He seemed pretty cool so far and was looking forward to showing him her collection. It was actually something she was quite proud of and if anyone would appreciate it, it would be someone like this guy. She smiled as she watched him type and read his response quickly. “Good choice! I love Pink Floyd. People usually think The Dark Side of the Moon is my immediate response when asked my favorite album but it’s actually The Wall and Wish You Were Here. She thought about his question carefully and then smirked. “Alright. I’m going to say Nirvana and Weezer. Didn’t see that coming, huh?”
✵ Seventeen. She was so young to be in a place like this. On the other hand he was only a couple year younger than him. Maybe he was underestimating her. She seemed to know how to live a life,or at least she had a good soundtrack for it. He nodded her her offer. Hanging around with someone could not be such a bad idea. Sooner or later he would need to make some friends.
╓
You have good taste in music.
This should be fun.
╜
She beamed at his response and closed her text books. “Let’s go then.”Kitty grinned at her hopefully new friends and gestured him to follow her. “So, Jono, are the Sex Pistols your favorite band or do you have another?” She wanted to make as much conversation as possible with him. Kitty held her books close to her chest as they walked through the hallway of the institute.
“We are in a bit of a limited market in the school,” Phoebe observed, turning a page in her book without looking up at the conversation.
“Unavoidable problem, I think,” Sophie said, “But worth noting. It’s a boarding school. Are there really so many people desperate for tutoring that the lot of us would be able to keep any sort of operation afloat, or would we just be press-ganging freshmen into signing up?”
She signed. “Agreed. Kitty closed her book to look up at the girls. Her eyes were already hurting her and she could feel the migraine coming on.
“Noted. It’s either plan B or a different business.” She chuckled lightly and then looked down at her phone at the blinking text message. “Looks like my guys isn’t showing anyway. So, how are you girls adjusting?”
“We were tutoring those freshmen, honestly. They needed math help and for someone to suggest that they can stop plucking their eyebrows within an inch of their life. It’s a kindness.”
Kitty smirked, looking up from her book. “Well, then they can’t protest, hmm?” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and lowered her gaze again to the text she had read several times. “We should open up a tutoring business even though my client is still very tardy.”
