A Vow as the Light Fades
A home of our own. A summer evening you hear the birds going home; home to their families. You come home to our family. A family we desperately craved after surviving destruction of our own families. Our children playing in the backyard and I cooking your favorite. The smell of love and hospitality fill the room, dancing from one to the other. I greet you with a kiss and show concern for your day as you do the same. We are a perfect match made in heaven. For how can something so beautiful and delicate come from something so opposite? I call the children in and we all sit once you have settled in. I sit and stare at my perfect little family as our dog and cat play in the other room. You stare at my from across the table with your perfect smile. I stare back, only to see something off. Somthing… not so perfect. In your eyes was a vision of misery. An apartment with a leaky ceiling. A broken thermostat where it’s always too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. It was all the was apparently there was. A home unlike ours that was full of brokenness and despair. What was love and laughter to us, was threats and despair in your eyes. A darkness like no other. I stare deeper to see the scraping of Pennies from the hole filled pants to keep food in the fridge. Spending time at work and never at home with the family. A home where meals are in separate rooms in front of a tv. And nights where we faced away and never say “goodnight, I love you”. Suddenly a light emerges. A reality? No. The darkness I seen in your eyes was my own. It was our reality. It was our real home…
I sit here on this empty bus. The lights begin to flicker as if it is trying to tell me something in Morse code. I try and close my eyes to ignore it, only to be bombarded with memories of moments I deeply regret. From things so major, to those so minor, only false perceptions could make them worse…. And that is exactly what I allowed to happen. A downward spiral began to form in my mind. I stare at it and feel as though I am being pushed by my guilt to fall into the abyss of despair. I open my eyes back to reality. Back to the empty bus and the flickering lights. As I sit and catch my breath, I stare at said lights and recognize what it is trying to tell me… “Save Yourself” Shocked, I am startled by the intercom. I look around and notice I am no longer where I recognize. The bus driver grabs his microphone, and begins to say in his raspy voice, “This is your last stop”
I’m a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but that’s just my other personalities
As I sit here and talk to the moon, it tells me the stories of all those who lost themselves. Drowning themselves in self pity and telling the moon about it all. I tell the moon my story and I see his tears. I ask the moon, what’s wrong? He tells me the stories are suffocating. For who will listen to his stories as he chokes on his tears. Who will listen to his pleas for help, who will he stare at when he’s longing for someone himself? Who can he go to when everyone goes to him? And that is the saddest story of them all.
Every night I stare where the moon is supposed to be, blocked by rain clouds and the screams of Mother Nature as tears form raindrops. I stare into each droplet dropping on my window, each one carrying a memory that I never want to be reminded of. I laugh, I cry, I type that phone number and delete it three times. I look at each droplet wash away, along with each memory as I take a sip of this Hennessy… for the 3rd night this week

I constantly have this dream of trying to run away, but I have no idea what I am running from. Multiple obstacles fall onto my path as I close in on the exit, but I barely overcome each one. Crying for an escape from what feels like an internal personal hell. Watching myself run and not being able to help myself is absolutely horrifying, but alas I see the exit sign!!!! I’m so fucking close…. I woke up again. Never escaping the hell in my dreams, only to enter the hell I face in real life
