This reminds me of a piece I wrote in my early 20s when I was grieving a relationship that didn’t go far enough to deserve grief lol 😮‍💨

The Haunting

It will happen unexpectedly.

One day, you two will just become...

Strangers to each other,

As if all the time that you spent

Were completely in vain.

So you'll erase all the pictures you have of you

two

Except for one nice one.

And they're not erased out of resent,

You just want to...

Maybe you need to,

but erased or not

Neither of you can forget the time spent

together, and neither of you will

Not because the memories were great,

They weren’t traumatic

They just...meant something...

They still mean something

And also because the brain is too cruel

It literally won't allow you to forget

At least completely

But for the most part,

it won't be on your mind, but

Sometimes

randomly

You'll hear a song,

or have a dream,

or smell a fragrance

and the wound that you thought had already healed and scarred will open and bleed again.

So you'll take out that picture, and Go to delete it

In hopes of that it will bring...peace,

but stop short and stare

At that question that follows

"Are you sure?"

Truth is...you won't be

So you'll close your phone and

Hope they’re doing well

At least better than you are,

and you'll pray for the day that

you're no longer haunted by

someone very much alive

My wife and I are aiming for our child to be born in September.
