I think before becoming human the Hanks would always do group costumes (power rangers, TNMT, Justice League... pikmin) but afterwards once they finally get the chance to pursue their own interests they do their own costumes
I think H1nk would be a huge anime fan especially shonen jump and his fav is One Piece (I was gonna make him Zoro but I felt guilty about H2nk being the only one not in green)
After H2nk started hanging out with Lyric he read a few recommendations and was like "damn vampires are kinda sexy" that was his only reasoning (the others made fun of him for picking something basic)
It was H3nk turn to help 0 with her costume and since he knew she loved video games he want ALL OUT on matching Bowser and Bowser Jr costumes (everybody was very impressed)
H4nk just wants to hang out and party he decided on kermit because he loves the Muppets (puts in the least effort and gets green paint EVERYWHERE whoever is hosting the party is pissed)
H5nk knows that 0 loves video games and wanted to be the cool dad so he googled 'cool video game dude' and bought the first costume he kinda recognised (0 doesn't play Zelda because she doesn't like the puzzles, he got completely showed up by H3nk who was the coolest dad that day)
