i figured i'd make a little post with context and plot bunnies to help out, since info is so sparse.
gen starts off in a town ("like Stockholm, not Stockholm") with her cat barnabus and her best friend tom duskfall, who runs a local bakery. she's sort of flailing in her adulthood, unsure of herself, and the self-doubt has impacted her magic, which is waning, and was never very strong to begin with especially in comparison to those around her. tom suggests getting out of their town, embracing the world, but she's hesitant, fearful to get out of her comfort zone. eventually it gets pretty rough, she's unable to fly, unable to perform even a simple spell, and she knows she's gotta do something to fix it. after talking to tom and doing some research, probably chatting with other locals, she finds a lead in either a location or some sort of wizard recluse living in a tower far off, a destination wildly outside of what she's used to. it takes a bit of psyching herself up (and tom's encouragement) but eventually she sets off. this journey is the most important part of her story, and i think where most of my threads and dynamics will take place - she goes all over! trying to regain her powers, inevitably seeing the world and taking off on countless side adventures, getting wrapped up in the chaos of the narrative. eventually she'll reach the end, but that's a story for another time :)
with this in mind .. any takers on plottin'?
in dnd/fantasy style verses i like to imagine gen is either a human or a hobbit and she's just finding herself in the siliest of positions and circumstances at any given moment

– @bloodymabel asked, ❝ I can’t think of anything less pleasant. ❞
" It's not so bad, actually, " she counters, brows furrowed but smile wide as she adjusts her backpack strap, beginning to feel a bit of an ache from the weight of the bag. " I mean, I can't, like, use the kitchen or anything but I've gotten really good at sneaking into hotels and b-lining for the toaster oven at the continental breakfast station. If you're confident enough they totally don't even question you. " Another adjustment. The real issue of renting out an airbnb spot in a swanky Manhattan building is the fact she's got a live cat with her at all times, and it wasn't exactly listed as pet-friendly. She takes a breath and shrugs, a movement trying to mask some of the strain her poor arm's starting to feel (perhaps a sign she's gotta start going to the gym). " Hey, you're not –– you won't tell anyone, right? I'm sort of supposed to be saying I'm her niece-in-law or something if anyone asks. "
this is barnabus (barney) btw
SENTENCE MEME ⟶ ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING / 1.01 + 1.02 always feel free to tweak the sentence to fit your muse.
“Here’s a thing I don’t get.”
“I don’t get people who worry about living in a big city because of all the crime.”
“As any true crime aficionado will tell you, it’s the boondocks you need to worry about.”
“Nobody ever discovered 19 bodies buried in the backyard of a 14-story apartment building.”
“New Yorkers have a special way of communicating.”
“He can’t really talk, or feed himself anymore.”
“It’s a place that makes you binge Dateline to find out how not to end up on Dateline.”
“I kick him right in the nuts, I grab my knitting needle, and I take him down to the bone with that thing.”
“Sometimes, when I can’t sleep, I imagine brutally murdering that dude.”
“It’s a lot. Don’t be here if you don’t like a lot.”
“Don’t we all feel like orphans here at times, struggling to find our place?”
“Just when it’s all starting to feel the same, that’s when you get hit by something you never saw coming.”
“Even the elevator wanted that story to end.”
“I was thinking more about their unorthodox clothing choice for farm living.”
“Listen, if I’ve ever offended you…”
“I almost forgot who went missing.”
“I am all for a good peeling of the onion, but let’s pace it up people.”
“Who are you, you fascinating creature?”
“You don’t have to answer that. Unless you want to, because I’m also curious.”
“Sounds like they offed themselves.”
“Did he seem like he was gonna go do something like that?”
“What fucking podcast are you all hooked on?”
“If I meet one more true crime nut..”
“Go on ahead and enjoy your cute little lives and be glad that you still have one.”
“I can’t stop thinking about this.”
“I really did not want this to become a regular thing, but I am strapped.”
“He seemed to get pleasure out of it, making her feel silly.”
“It’s mortifying coming to you like this.”
“I’m revolted at myself.”
“Obviously it makes me very sad to hear that.”
“It’s the first time I’ve been alone in, like, ever.”
“I’d rather die.”
“Hey, did you hear about the mysterious death in the park last night?”
“Sometimes it’s easier to figure out someone else’s secret than it is to deal with your own.”
“Your lies might fool some people, but not me.”
“You think you’re so special because you had a rough dad.”
“Every person is a mystery, but to care about a murder mystery, you need to care about the person who was murdered.”
“We know he got manicures, or perhaps he just had naturally pleasing nail beds.”
“I literally feel myself aging when I listen to you.”
“Do we have to do this in a closet?”
“A murderer probably lives in the building.”
“I guess old white guys are only afraid of colon cancer and societal change.”
“He seems to have had a really sad, quiet life.”
“I’ve fallen in love with so many dead people.”
“You can’t disappear then show up and start dragging up a bunch of shit from the past.”
“You can make things right.”
“I don’t need people like you in my life.”
“This won’t take long unless you make it long.”
“Nobody liked him, but can we all just be grateful he’s gone?”
“Say something nice and move on.”
“Wouldn’t be the first to kill for good real estate.”
“Our victim is less likeable than a dead cat.”
“Don’t fuck with me.”
“I can’t think of anything less pleasant.”
“I didn’t cry that much when my mother died.”
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do right now.”
“I live in a place where they give out loose cigarettes and lighters for Halloween.”
“He was direct, but never lied.”
“I’m too poor to read.”
“You smell like a field of lavender and french fries.”
“The reason I don’t tip is out of respect for you.”
“Don’t respect me so much, okay?”
“Do I wanna break into a dead guy’s apartment and go through all his shit?”
“Are my feet bleeding through my shoes?”
“Sex toys! We got sex toys, people!”
“Nothing shameful about deviant sexual pursuits.”
“A lot of people name their pets human names.”
“I don’t think unlikeable means he deserved to die.”
“You of all people should know how fucking sad that is.”
“We should promise not to lie and just trust each other.”
“I’m just trying to figure out who you are.”
“I always enjoyed watching you figure things out.”
“He was the kind of guy that always made the sensible choice.”
“He was observant and robotic, but also kind if you looked at him the right way.”
