My gawddamn sticker collection started when my college BFF Val would mail cards with these tiny trinkets she'd collect from her local, Seattle art markets.
They signified something so particular to one place in the world, one artist's style and substance which were like diamonds to me.
So started my own Los Angeles tiny, sticky art gallery.
Most artists who do any kind of 2D work will have these cheap bites of their catalog, and it's been a cost-effective way to support multiple vendors at one event and come home with a diverse bounty.
In just a couple years, I'd STUFFED a dollar store binder and plastic baseball card sleeves with my collection. But I'm not a hoarder... This hobby has taught me to let things go as if I was a child learning to share again.
With literal stickers.
Every sticker I purchase (if it's not one of the free, brand stickies handed out at the booths) involves a design I'm personally attracted to. And, suffice it to say, there's inevitable overlap of taste and interest within the assorted personalities of my friends.
So every birthday, small holiday or congratulatory event, my friends receive a few pieces of tiny, sticky art that symbolizes a link between the two of us.
THE WITCHING HOUR IS (STUCK) UPON US
Per my personality, it makes sense that a significant portion of my collection is CWEEPY. This gave me the idea to handmake and mail Halloween cards this year with a few stickies for about a dozen friends.
Since starting the sticker swap, I've made a habit of penning the artist name and origin (art market, event, city etc.) on the back while leaving room for funny, cryptic messages or specific notes to individual friends like an inedible fortune cookie.
Some of my favorites include "There's a light inside all of us like the candle in a jack-o'-lantern" (behind my derpy pumpkin), "Some of our souls have patches and holes" (on back of my tea towel ghost) and "When the world gets scary, scare it back" behind my scaredy cat.
These duplicates are my own art that I illustrated a few years ago as part of my own contribution to the culture I'm such a fan of (much like the purpose of this Tumblr blog.)
You're looking at the 5th home print run (highly recommend the Epson EcoTank for color, clarity and ink/cost saving) after hand cutting and passing them out with candy around our local front yard haunts. I live in an apartment building, so it's just easier to take myself to the trick-or-treaters.
