Some pictures from my current Japanese travels I took on my shitty phone. Apologies for the potato quality. There's a ticket you can buy, 青春18きっぷ (or something) which basically allows you to travel as much as you want on local and express trains for 5 days (you can choose which days, they don't have to be consecutive) in a month. They offer it in winter and summer. My girlfriend and I copped a couple and set off with no destination in mind. We've been sleeping in karaoke joints and net cafés but we've gotten to see some pretty incredible stuff.
