south asian girls are beautiful pass it on
We have the audacity to break His rules and then ask Him for something in return and He still gives it to us. His greatness blows my mind.
“Bhagat Puran Singh 1904 – 1992 -was born in Rajewal (Rohno) Ludhiana district, Punjab. Born into a Hindu family, he was given the name Ramji Das as a child. Later, while still a child, he chose to become a Sikh. Though he never finished his basic schooling, he became a writer, a (self) publisher, an environmentalist, and a philanthropist. He is perhaps best remembered for the home he founded in Amritsar, India, named Pingalwara, a home which long after his death, is still tending to the castaways of society: the sick, disabled and abandoned forlorn people. We salute to the man who devoted his whole life to humanity. Why arent women allowed to do kirtan at darbar sahib?
Darbar Sahib and women doing kirtan? I am not sure exactly why. I dont know enough about this topic to support or condemn it. People argue that traditionally only men did kirtan at derbar shaib and it should be maintained. Darbar Sahib is under SGPC control, they are the ones who enforce these rule. They would probably be the best people to ask. Its has never really concerned me so I have never bothered to ask anyone. Maybe ill try to get an answer next time I go to Darbar Sahib.
I’m not sure if this goes for kirtan in darbar sahib as well but Santbir Singh from Toronto did a talk last summer where he explained that women not being allowed to do seva in Darbar Sahib actually came out of the time period before the Singh Sabha Movement when Darbar Sahib was under the control of hindu mahants. When the sangat took back Darbar Sahib and began reformation for the “rules” at Darbar Sahib, one of the things that was not completely changed, for some reason, was women not being allowed to do seva.
If you think about it, it makes no sense. It was Guru Raam Daas Jee who first began establishing Sri Harmandir Sahib and part of the land for Darbar Sahib was actually given to Bibi Bhani Jee, Guru Raam Daas Jee’s wife, as a gift from Emperor Akbar. Her name is still on the deed to Darbar Sahib. Sick, right? But the point is, would Bibi Bhani Jee, who spent her entire life doing seva for Guru Amar Daas Jee that we would not even be able to wrap our heads around, who helped ESTABLISH DARBAR SAHIB, be denied the right to do seva there just because she is a woman? Does it really make any sense?
This summer at a camp i was talking to a group of younger girls and we were talking about seva at Darbar Sahib. There was this one girl, who I think is in grade 9 or 10, who was telling us about how when she went to Darbar Sahib she wanted to do Langar Seva and was told that she couldn’t. At this point she just broke down in tears because her desire to do seva was completely heartfelt and innocent and she didn’t understand why she couldn’t. So she asked the singhs there and they wouldn’t give her an answer, other than that “women are impure at that time of the month”. She ended up going to the office where the people who i guess would be the committee were and questioned them about it. Eventually they gave in and let her do seva. She was telling us all of this as though it wasn’t a big deal that she did this, but we were in shock. We don’t really realize the value of seva until we have a desire for it like THAT.
I really feel that this whole rule needs to be gone. It contradicts all of Sikhism beliefs that women and men are equal. In the time period of the Gurus, women were not denied their right to do this so who gives all these committees the right or knowledge to deny a person’s will to do seva or kirtan? Some Gurdwara committees need to be re-established or something because they’re really messing things up and creating false beliefs in our religion about what we can and cannot do.
