Punj Lloyd, the leader in aircraft parts manufacturing

Punj Lloyd forayed into the aviation sector in June 2007, with the aim of offering service support for the corporate aviation in India. Called Punj Lloyd Aviation , the company, in a tie-up with the US-based Global Technology Investments Group LLC, bought a 23.24% stake in Air Works India.

The joint venture has the honour of clinching the first private equity deal in Indian aircraft corporate aviation sphere, and aims to create top notch aviation services and solutions.

Punj Lloyd appoints Shiv Punj as additional director

Shiv Punj, the son of Mr. Atul Punj has been appointed as the Additional Director of EPC giant Punj Lloyd. Mr. Shiv has to his credit a MA Bachelor of Arts degree in International Global Studies from Brandeis University, Waltham. He completed his schooling from Millfield School, Somerset, UK. He was working as Manager (Business Strategy & Corporate Development) and was reporting to the Managing Director and Group CEO under Commercial Leadership Program, prior to his appointment as the Additional Director in the company.

Shiv Punj has done his internship with JP Morgan Chase (Investment Banking and Private Banking), London for a period of three months and with Olive Group, London for a period of six months. His last assignment was with Bain & Company as an Associate Consultant.

Punj Lloyd wins Rs 308 crore infrastructure project in UAE

Engineering Procurement Construction firm Punj Lloyd has bagged an infrastructure order worth Rs 308 crore in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai. The company has been given this contract by Front Line Investment Management Co. LLC, a subsidiary of Damac Properties Development LLC, for the construction of 168 villas at Trixis Cluster of the Akoya Oxygen master development offering a luxury lifestyle at the heart of nature in Al Yufrah 2,Dubai.

Akoya Oxygen is a magnificent community offering cleaner air, naturally cooler temperatures and a carefully designed master plan and road network system to reduce pollution, with dedicated spaces for bicycles and hybrids. It is only 25 minutes from the centre of the city along the Umm Suqeim Expressway and spread over 55 million square feet. The community will feature a selection of opulent homes set within endless green with 18-hole championship golf course, luxurious five-star hotel as well 2,000 hotel apartments, luxury Retail Strip (Vista Lux) encompassing 1 million square foot entertainment and retail district featuring a waterway and more than 1.5 km of the walkway. Speaking on this win, Shantanu Karkun, President and CEO, Buildings & Infrastructure, Punj Lloyd said that Dubai is today synonymous with luxury and it is their privilege to win this contract for a premium luxury development.  The Akoya Oxygen community will have the region’s first rainforest and will be fully completed before EXPO 2020, he added. Punj Lloyd Group has delivered several luxury spaces including the Jumeirah Islands Villa in Dubai, the Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore and the many integrated iconic entertainment resorts in Singapore, he affirmed. With this win, the Group’s order backlog stands at INR 25,708 crore. The order backlog is the value of unexecuted orders on December 31, 2015, plus new orders received after that date.

Punj Lloyd bags Tanap Gas Pipeline contract worth $409m in joint venture with Limak

Indian Engineering, Procurement and Construction giant Punj Lloyd had bagged contract for Tanap Gas Pipeline in Turkey from Tanap Dogalgaz Iletim. The project would involve constructing a 459km pipeline. The contract, which amounts to $409 million, has been bagged in joint venture with Limak. This is the second project for Punj Lloyd- Limak JV in Turkey. Punj Lloyd has a share worth $204 million in this contract.

The Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) will almost cost $10bn to $11bn. It will be constructed to transport natural gas from the South Caucasus Pipeline Company (SCPC) in Georgia to the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) in Greece.

Punj Lloyd’s scope of work in this contract would include second phase of construction from the new Eskisehir Compressor station to the tie-in point of TAP. Alongside this, the EPC giant will also be responsible for  block valve stations, pigging facility and tie-ins with metering stations. The gas pipeline will be of 48” in diameter.

Beginning from compressor station 5A at Eskisehir in Turkey, the proposed section of the pipeline will traverse through the adjoining areas of cities such as Eskisehir, Bursa, Balikesir, Canakkale and Edirne.

This project would provide gas from Shah Deniz-2 gas field, and other areas of the Caspian Sea to Turkey and a few parts of Europe.

The initial capacity of Tanap is expected to reach 16 billion cubic metres of gas per year and could potentially be increased to 31 billion cubic metres in the future.

Around six billion cubic metres gas will be delivered to Turkey and is expected to begin in 2018, while the rest will be supplied to Europe.

The global EPC giant Punj Lloyd has a state of the art manufacturing facility. It is housed with cutting edge machines and defence systems in Gwalior on a 65 acre land. The company has the following divisions under its ‘Plant and Machinery’:

Water Jet Cutting Machine

It is 5 Axes CNC Profiling Machine with a bed size of 6m x 3m. It enables cold cutting of any known material. The depth of cut can be up to 160mm with an accuracy of 100 microns per metre. It offers repeatability of 30 microns and max cutting speed is 25m/min.

Turn Mill

It is a turning center with live axis for milling operations with a choice of 8 tooling stations. It has an X Z Axis – 210 x 610 mm and a Y Axis  ± 60mm. the machine has a swing over saddle of 360mm diameter. It offers repeatability of 3 microns and 5 Arc seconds. The feed rate is 6 meters/minute.

Mill Turn

It has a bed size of 1.2 x 1.2 x 1 m and capacity of 5 tons. It offers repeatability of 3 microns. It can be used as a VTL for sizes up to 1m3 and is capable of handling metals from Aluminium to Titanium.

Horizontal Machine Centre

It has a table size of 3m x 2m with stroke XYZ 5m x 2.5m x 3.2m. It has quill axis of 700mm and XY & Z axes linear roller for high accuracy.

Double Column Gantry Machine

 It has a 5 Axis Double Column Gantry Machining Center, Colgar. The bed size is 8 x 3.5 m. It has 5 interchangeable heads and offers repeatability of 3 microns. It helps moving cross beam capable of machining operation on five faces of a cuboid in a single setting.

Floor Type Machining Centre

It is a Floor Type Machining Centre, PAMA with table size 5x1.5m with rotary table of 1.6m diameter. The stroke XYZ is 8m x 2m x 1m and quill axis is 700 mm. It has a 2 T/m2 carrying capacity table and XY&Z axes’ repeatability is 3 micron.

Punj Lloyd receives highway projects worth Rs 1,555 crore

The arrival of 2016 has brought fortune along for us as Punj Lloyd has received 4 highway projects from the central government. We are happy to announce that the combined value of the projects has been estimated to be Rs 1,555 crore. The projects span across Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Punjab.

The projects at Bihar, Odisha and Chhattisgarh are assigned to us by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) while the one in Punjab by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH).

The Bihar project to be worth Rs 567 crore and it entails four-laning of 60 km of the Simaria-Khagaria section of NH31. Punj Lloyd was the developer for 140 km of the Khagaria-Purnea section on the same highway.  The Chhattisgarh package, worth Rs 513 crore, comprises the four/six laning of 48 km of the Raipur-Simga section of NH200 in Chhattisgarh. This contract includes the bypass and 22 supporting structures like flyover, vehicular underpass (VUP) and bridges. This section of NH200 is the major power hub of India connecting the state capital, Raipur to Bilaspur through various industrial and commercial establishments. 

In Odisha, Punj Lloyd has been entrusted with the rehabilitation and upgradation of four laning with paved shoulders of 50 km of the Talebani to Sambalpur section of NH6 in the state of Odisha. The contract is worth Rs 392 crore. The fourth contract in Punjab has been bagged in joint venture with VRC Constructions (I) Pvt Ltd for four laning of 35 km of the Tallewal-Barnala section of the NH 71.  The scope of work for this project would include the construction of the Barnala bypass and 13 other supporting infrastructure including flyovers, passenger underpass (PUP), and road over bridge (ROB) and bridges.

1.2   Aero structures and dynamic components for aviation: Manufacturing and Systems Integrations Division has AS-9100C certification to manufacture aerospace components. Our first order, from HAL, includes 4m long wing components for the Su-30 Fighter Aircraft. We are simultaneously working on various other aerospace related projects for HAL.

2.       Products

The Punj Lloyd Group has the capability to manufacture and supply a wide range of products which include components, assemblies and fully integrated systems.

2.1 Upgrade of 130 mm Artillery Gun

Punj Lloyd has proposed a solution for upgunning of the existing 130 mm M-46 gun held with the Indian Army. The upgrade involves replacement of the existing 130 mm barrel, muzzle brake, breech block and associated modification to the recoil system of the existing gun. The new gun will be modified to 155 mm/45 cal capable of firing the entire family of 155 mm standard NATO ammunition as per JBMoU.

2.2 Upgrade of ZU-23mm 2B Air Defence Gun

Punj Lloyd upgraded the existing ZU-23 2B Gun by replacing the manual laying system with a rugged Electro Optical Fire Control System (EOFCS) for the Corps of Army Air Defence. The EOFCS gives the gun the capability to engage at aerial targets during day and night in plains, deserts or in mountains. The Gun has been modified with a day and night camera, laser range finder and a digital fire control computer.  The upgraded-gun can engage NATO standard aerial targets, upto a range of 2500 m flying at 300m/s.

2.3 Foreign Object and Debris

Punj Lloyd has a strategic tie up with Stratech Systems Ltd., Singapore for the iFERRET system. iFERRET is the world’s first intelligent vision based Foreign Object and Debris Detection System that provides real-time, automated FOD detection, location and recording, at commercial airport and military airbase.

2.4 Small and Medium Caliber Weapons

Assembly and integration of small weapon systems like automatic and semi automatic rifles, anti material rifle, hand held rocket launchers and accessories.

3.       MRO

Punj Lloyd has a variety of construction and specialized equipment that requires periodic overhaul at facilities which are strategically spread across various geographies for instant mobilization and repair support. One of our facilities in Banmore is capable of handling MRO activities for engines, hydraulics, tracks, transmission and control systems and all construction equipment. The company is leveraging the facility to carry out MRO activities for T-72 and ICV BMP-2.

A lot was being said about Indian PM Narendra Modi when he was about to embark on a visit to the UK. Politicians of opposition parties criticized this visit and termed it as a useless ‘travel’ even before it could commence. They protested that Modi was wasting time and evading issues of national importance that demanded his attention. Few went a step ahead and questioned his foreign trip citing the cost the country would have to incur. But our PM, being determined as always, went ahead with the trip. In three days, 27 deals amounting to £9-billion were sealed between the two countries. Deals were signed for various sectors including energy, finance, IT, education, logistics and health sector. Ever since David Cameron came into power six years ago, he had been trying to maintain healthy relations with India. This visit from Indian PM has ascertained that the feeling is mutual.

The company has already manufactured the Lower and Upper Tank Panel for Su30 Aircraft for HAL at Nasik; main Gear Box Assembly for ALH at HAL Bangalore and Combustion Chamber Mig 27 at HAL Koraput.

In context with the ‘Make in India’ initiative’ Mr. Ashok Wadhawan feels that for a healthy business environment, the administrative machinery must be efficient and a hassle free clearance mechanism needs to be established in the country. He opines that India should give tax concessions to companies which set-up units in the country.
