Madden let out a soft chuckle. "Thanks. I think it's pretty cool myself but " he broke. "Over the past month. I was one of few to survive the accident that left me like this. I went to four before I went to Hidehill for another surgery." He stated. "I'm missing a few that are further away because I can't travel on my own like this and its too far to drive. but my guys know I am there in spirit." He said with an exhale. "I don't really know what they are doing... they kept it all from me. I found out yesterday when I got out of the hospital. Jordan said he didn't want me to worry when I had to worry about my self and I get it. I think he knew I wouldn't stay in the hospital if I found out and that's where I needed to be. But for search parties? I don't know what they are doing. I can't really join either way.
Dino fell silent, listening to the other as they uncomfortably shuffled in their chair. He couldn't imagine losing that many people, on top of that also being left injured-- having to miss funerals? It sounded like an absolute nightmare to them. "Oh god-- I'm--" silence as they thought for a second. "I'm so sorry." they whispered, taking a deep breath as their eyes wandered over the other's face. "That's nice of him-- and I get not wanting to prioritize yourself but-- with the state you're in you're not really gonna be any help." they carefully stated. "I have to say you are one tough dude you know? Going through all of this, and you still seem-- slightly optimistic-- or -- not happy but like-- I don't know, I can't really find the word I'm looking for."
"I mean, I knew you had an accent, just didn't know from where." She said with a shrug. "But yeah, I can see how it's not as strong as if you were to live there." Lakeyn herself had a cute little southern twang to her words. "I'm Lakeyn. The best damn person you will meet in this shit hole of a town."
"Oh damnit, here I was hoping I fit right in as an all-- what is it ? Red blooded American?" Dino grinned. "Oh god my accent at first was horrible, I don't speak the local dialect too much, my mom really hammerd the fact I need to 'speak properly' into me as a young child but I still speak enough for it to slip in my English sometimes." they shrugged. "Oeh love your name, the best huh? Loving that!"
"Oh believe me, I wish I could be on your level," Sienna admitted with a laugh. "I'm better now with most things but there are still some foods I just can't manage the texture of." She tried to remind herself that she wasn't trying to make friends. She was here to be under the radar, easily forgettable once her two years was up. But their smile was contagious and she couldn't help but mirror back the brightness they were exuding. "I could use a guinea pig for my baking experiments." At the mention of tattoos her eyes widened. "Oh, are you a tattoo artist? There's never been something I've been decided on enough to get inked into my skin but I think tattoo art is so beautiful and so important. I'd love to see some of your work." Her gaze drifted down to her basket, which had gotten a little fuller than she intended. "I'll definitely put mango's on my shopping list for next time. I'm currently committed to making apple cinnamon blondies with maple cream cheese frosting."
"Who knows, maybe one day you'll get there." Dino smiled. "Oh yea textures can be hell-- I personally love weird textures but I have been told I'm a pretty weird person so-- it'd be weird if I didn't like weird you know?" they spoke, grinning at their own stupid 'joke'. "Oh yes that is me, I am guinea pig, did I not tell you that's my middle name? Because it definitely is." they eagerly nodded. "I'd love to show you! I have a whole bunch of random meaningless tattoo's that I absolutely love, I might regret some of them but I will always love them in their own dumb way." he shrugged. "Oh-- oh that sounds heavenly -- please tell me I can come try some? Please? I'll do anything, like-- literally, I will commit a murder if you need me to."
Madden let a soft chuckle escape his lips. "Honestly," He paused for a beat "I'm terrible with names too" It brought a small smile to his face. It had gotten him into trouble when he was younger, trying to remember the girls name waking up in his bed. "Dino, that's a pretty cool name thought." He added in. He liked original names, he liked having one himself. "My legal name is Madden too, not some nickname. A lot of people thought it was because I played football." He added in. He did get teased a bit when he was younger, but the second his growth spurt kicked in and he towered over everyone else, that stopped. "Thanks man." He sucked in a breath. "I've just been to too many funerals the past two weeks." This was the first time he was admitting it. Even Jordan was in the dark with what happened to him overseas. "I just don't want to add Luke to that list."
"Glad I'm not the only one." Dino smiled. "Thanks." he grinned, 'named myself that' he mentally added, though they wouldn't say it out loud. Not yet, while being confident and comfortable in their own skin, genuinely coming out was one thing. They preferred to test the water first and see how people perceived him without having to actually state anything. "I like your name, very badass, suits ya." they smiled, leaning his head in his palm as they looked across the diner for a second. Their attention snapped back to the other at the mention of funerals, plural. That didn't sound good. "Multiple funerals? In two weeks? Jeez dude that fucking sucks." they said, mouth slightly open in disbelief. "I can imagine-- if there is anything I can do, I'm always open to help -- I don't know if they have like-- search parties or whatever, I haven't really-- looked into that. But if there are I got plenty of free time."
"You've been the Belgium?" She questioned. She always wanted to leave the country and with her finical status she easily could. She never understood why they never did growing up. She lifted her chin and a smirk spread across her lips. "I like your confidence." She let out a laugh. "What was your name again?" She questioned.
"Well yes, I was born there." Dino smiled. "Most people say I have a bit of an accent, though I do believe I'm losing the accent a bit, I have been here for a couple years so I hope I'm losing it." they shrugged. "Thank you, worked hard to get it." they half-joked, winking at the other. "Dino, pleasure to meet you."
𝐀𝐇, 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐇. 𝐆𝐀𝐄𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐃 when there was once a time where he could live completely oblivious to the world, but everything had changed the very moment ella came into the world. it was something that he never predicted for himself, having to act like an adult at sixteen. ❝ oh fuck yeah that bad -- if i find a record that i've listened to my entire life in mint condition, how can it not come home with me ? ❞ he liked dino, he considered them to be a good kid as far as hidehill's younger generation was concerned. gael had always considered himself to be a good judge of character, even with the pending doom looming overhead. ❝ you see i used to do that -- but the older i get the more i have to learn how to keep myself in check. i have a kid's college expenses to pay for. ❞
"I mean it's a sign, it'd be stupid to ignore signs send from-- whatever you believe in you know? Bad karma if you did." Dino joked, winking at the other. "I--" Dino was about to comment before stopping, the 'kids college expenses' hitting them. "You have a kid?" he questioned, frowning as he looked the other up and down. "Sorry that might-- sorry that may have come out rude. I didn't mean it -- you just-- don't look like you got a kid in college you know?"
Sienna laughed at the playful shock volleyed in her direction. "I was a picky eater. Berries were hard for me because there was no consistency. One was big and sweet, another would be squishy and more sour. It took me a while to learn to appreciate the mystery of it." With a nod of agreement, she lit up at the mention of apples. "Apples are my favorite. In the fall I make my own apple cider and lots of apple baked goods. I don't...I don't think I've actually tried mango. I mean I've had mango flavored drinks and stuff but I don't think I've ever had the whole fruit."
"Oh damn-- I get that though, although I never understood picky eaters? Like not in a bad way, but I'm a total pig like give me anything and I will eat it. Or at least attempt to there are in fact things I don't like but like-- I cannot imagine not liking like-- everything, personally. But I'm happy that you're exploring and embracing the mystery, good on you." they smiled. "Oh-- oh I do believe we are meant to become best friends, you give me baked goods and I will give you amazing company. And if you're interested, free tattoo's!" they smiled. "Oh mango is so good! You got to try it, although I usually eat like half a mango and freeze the rest for like-- smoothies because a full mango is too much. You have to try it's genuinely so good."
Dino's house is a mix of colorful and spooky. From brightly colored furniture to skulls, bats and moon themed objects. They have a very maximalist home with lots of little things all over the place.
𝐀𝐇 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 -- 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒𝐓 form of processing, if one was insane enough to believe that. it seemed that gael was bound to this concept, hopeful that he could keep his head on his shoulders. for his friends, for his family, for his coworkers.. so they could have a shoulder to lean on. someone to cry to. curse the internet for being available, giving his college-bound daughter more reasons to worry, the list growing longer every day that lucas was missing. he wanted her to stay there, continue her education and not worry about him for a single second. thus, he found himself blindly led to the record store, hoping that a collection of impulse purchases may lighten his mood.
❝ eh, more than i care to admit. ❞ he laughs as the other speaks, arms crossed over his chest as he removes his gaze from a limited edition jimi hendrix record. ❝ if i came here more often than i do, my bank account would be absolutely fucked. ❞
"Oh I get that." he chuckled, nodding as he looked the other over. "That bad huh? That's why I only occasionally check my bank account-- I can live in absolute oblivion to the fact it's screaming at me to put my card down."
𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐍 this spiral coming from a mile away and yet -- with the discovery of lucas' ear, it felt as if she had been hit by a truck. engaging in any kind of routine felt wrong now. no matter how much his shame for being with her had ripped her apart, she couldn't help but care. it was a trait that she both adored about herself and despised. it left her hurt more often than not, leaving her detached and alone. no matter how much she drank, no matter how much her throat burned, his face still sat in the front of her memory. smiling at her. telling her how much he loved her. that one day, their love would see the sun. and now, he never may again.
❝ his ear, they found his fucking ear... ❞ the blonde mumbled in a time that was shockingly coherent for her drunken state. ❝ what the fuck is happening.. ❞
Dino was definitely someone to eaves drop on other's conversations. They wouldn't admit it, but he did do it often. Bars were one of their favorite places to be, the vibes, the music, the alcohol-- and the conversations. It was all truly inspirational.
Dino wasn't a heavy drinker though, mainly just the type of person to slowly sip a beer while appreciating their surroundings. Although this-- was something new to overhear. Something that shocked them enough to actually look at the person he was eaves dropping on. "You-- you okay?" they questioned, leaning a bit closer to the unfamiliar face next to him. "I'm guessing you're talking about-- Lucas?"
Madds shrugged his broad shoulders. "Sure" He responded to the others offer of company. "Jordan is my little brother... not so little if you look at his size... anyway." He paused. "Lucas is his best friend and the three of us were menaces' in high school together. We all played Hockey, I played football with Luke. Lacrosse on my own. But yeah. He was like a little brother to me. Bought him his first beer, drove them everywhere until they got licenses and cars." He paused again, why was it hard talking about him? He wasn't dead. He couldn't be. "He was a stand up dude. We grew out of our high school days, well me and Luke did, Jordan is debatable. I feel for his girlfriend. They were together a while too." he picked up the cup of coffee the waiter had placed on the table. "I'm Madden by the way." Maybe they had herad of him. Everyone was proud of their 'hero'; the boy who joined the marines and made his town proud. Now look at him, barley surviving the guilt that ate him from the inside.
Dino nodded, taking a seat across from the other, putting his belongings by their feet on the floor. Dino listened patiently, every so often nodding or giving a little hum to show they were listening. "I've heard that name before-- can't quiet remember but I'm usually bad with names if I can't put a face to it you know?" they shrugged. "I'm Dino, and yes that is my actual legal name." they shrugged. "I'm sorry to hear about -- all of this though. I can't imagine losing someone so close to me... especially not without the knowing of what is going on with him. I do hope they find him though. He sounds like a good dude."
The answer, of course, was yes. No harm had come to her, or any of the cereal boxes on the floor. She was fine for all intents and purposes. But her mind was a flurrying storm of embarrassment and anxiety, her brain practically presenting a power point of every single time she'd ever done something klutzy or embarrassing. She wasn't fine for a moment, but then she worked on her breathing, let her eyes drift down to the flooring for a moment, found a spot on the hardwood that was slightly discolored. "I'm good," she answered when it was true, lifting her gaze to the other and offering a smile. "You have good taste in cereal," she offered, shifting her grocery basket to show she had the same brand among her purchases. "The strawberries are on sale...if you like those...I hated them when I was little but now they're my favorite fruit."
Dino followed her eye movement for a second, waiting for her response. "That's good, didn't hurt you in anyway did I?" they asked, looking the other over. "Oh thanks! So many amazing choices here you know?" he smiled. "How-- how does one hate strawberries? Especially when little?" they questioned, feining shock. "Strawberries are the best-- although I do also love a simple old apple, but nothing beats mango."
Lakeyn nodded. Why was that so surprising? She bought a record store, she liked music. "Well yeah, if you go off the stereotype of record stores. You would think I'd be an old man and this place would be dusty and boring like we walked out of the 90s" She wasn't really known for her sweet words or pleasant tone. "Which this place is not." She added in. She had done a lot of updates when she bought it off the previous owner. It looked a lot more zen and relaxing but also brought it in to this age. "You can't be everyone's type." She said bluntly, this conversation took a turn. Maybe she was slightly offended. Did her décor suggest she was older? She would need to redecorate again.
"See! You get it, so sorry I did not mean any offense-- in Belgium the record stores are usually owned by dusty old men. Who will act like they are superior for owning a record shop." they shrugged. "Is that a statement or a challenge?" he winked, grinning. "Don't worry I know I can't, would also rather not be. Too many weird people in this world you know? Can't vibe with 'em."
Diego was a big lover of music, specifically rock music. He was rarely seen (or rather heard) driving around in his Mustang without some ACDC or Guns n Roses or Nirvana blasting out of the speakers. And, like all real music buffs, he knew that shit sounded way more fire when they were on 9" pressed vinyls. So, yes, he was a regular here. "Yeah, man, shit is fire," he said before laughing when he said it wasn't a pickup line. "Nah, you're good. I don't swing that way, by the way, even if it was, y'know?" Diego smiled as he flicked through the records. "What you lookin' for?"
Dino grinned at the other's statement, nodding. "It really is-- I'm glad the good old classics are making their come backs you know? Vinyl's are the superior way of listening to music." they chuckled. "This is usually the part where my ego takes over and I make some-- wildly inappropriate comments but seeing as I'm new here I'm definitely working on -- you know-- not being that weirdo." they shrugged, Dino might be secretive about their life but god did he talk too much. "Eh just browsing mostly-- I'm looking to treat myself but I got so many on my want list that it's -- hard to choose."
the happenings in town had unnerved orla martin. she had once been one to shrug the disappearance off but then the texts came in and then, a body part? none of it was a good sign that lucas was well. there was a sense of guilt coming from the woman as she wondered why she wasn't more worried about it to begin with. the woman had done just about everything to keep herself entertained, even got up to date on her paperwork, of all things because she decided to finally leave her house (that she hadn't left since the news had broken) to stroll around town.
of course, she'd be constantly looking over her shoulder for any sort of threat that could follow her or that she could spot. hearing the voice behind her at the record shop, orla nearly jumped out of her skin. "jesus christ." she looked back, eyes wide. "sometimes, yeah. like to look at the artwork. i have a player and that but need to be careful what i spend mi money on."
Dino took a step back at the others reaction, throwing their hands up to show they mean no harm. "Sorry-- I -- wow I did not mean to scare you." they said, an awkward laugh rolling out of their throat. "Ah that's fair, I'm a collector myself-- I might have a bit of a hoarding problem in all honesty but -- this is just-- it's so good, it's classic and good you know?"
Forgot his name? What had happened to this town in the time he had been away? Of course the population grew a bit and it was becoming more modern. Was hidehill o it's way to not being a small town anymore? Where neighbors know their neighbors? He was one to talk thought, not knowing the person in front of him. "Lucas" He breathed out. "Yeah. That's exactly who I mean." His voice was low, tone emotionless. "You didn't know him? He was a great dude - is. He is a great dude." He caught himself talking in the past tense but no. He's not dead. He couldn't be.
"Lucas, right, sorry." he spoke gently, awkwardly shifting on his feet as he looked down at the floor for a second, before looking back up. "Ah no sorry I only moved here like-- two months ago-- I'm only now really going out and getting to know people so I-- I didn't get to meet him-- before." they spoke, carefully choosing their words. Obviously the person in front of them knew Lucas, and he wasn't about to say the wrong thing and make someone feel even worse than they seemingly were already feeling. "I bet he-- is." he spoke. "Want some company? I'd love to hear about him."
