Bandersnatchgate is alive and thriving
So while everyone has been going crazy over Noah's comments at the cons, we've had one of the first public Duffer outing in ages that we've somehow collectively overlooked, which is crazy as it's some of the biggest CG proof in months?
The Duffers hosted a Q&A with Genki Kawamura, the director of the upcoming film Exit 8. A film based on a video game about a man trapped in an endless corridor - the only way to escape is to carefully observe your surroundings and notice anomalies in the corridor. Things that seem out of place, that aren't supposed to be there. If you don't turn around after there's an anomaly, it resets and you end up at the beginning again.
During the Q&A, the Duffer trolls asked Genki "how he found the balance between what is explained to the audience and what is open to interpretation"
Yup. They went there.
Genki gracefully answered that the explanation would feel "very, very minimal" and that, narratively, both music and the modern artwork shown on screen, played a big role. Specifically, he was referencing the Mobius Strip II painting by Escher, which hangs in the hallway and symbolises the infinite looping nature of the corridor.
Does this sound familiar?
You might be asking yourself how Genki's answer bears any significance on the Duffers. Well, during the panel, Ross teased Genki about their potential upcoming project:
"We may or may not be working on something with you Genki but we can't talk about that"
Another secret project that they can't talk about? Hm...
Coincidentally, they're working with a director who recently adapted a video game into film format... Sounds awfully close to an interactive film. Here's what Genki had to say about his process:
"So the fact that this game didn't have a story, I saw that as both a challenge and an opportunity. And initially I approached this not with the intention of making a video game adaptation into a movie, but trying to blur the lines between the video game and movie mediums.
I had the opportunity to be on a panel with Miyamoto, who said that what makes a great game is not just entertaining players but also the people watching the player and what the player is putting on the screen. So at times I wanted the audience of the film to feel like they were in the shoes and POV of the player and other times I wanted them to feel as though they were watching a twitch live stream of a game happening before them. So I tried to capture what is happening in the video game space holistically and distill it down to a film"
Ross goes on to say that it did feel like watching a live stream at times, that he kept wanting to yell at the screen to tell the player to turn around when he spotted an anomaly.
Such an interesting panel, all about blending the interface between both the movie and video game mediums... hm....
I was digging into some more of the Duffers interviews, and they, interestingly, also decided to interview the Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima as part of the Season 5 press tour. I didn't deep it too much at the time, but it did stand out to me as an...odd choice? Not completely wacky, but also not completely what I had been expecting!
I did some more digging and found this clip of them post-finale talking about the nature of the "Stranger Things Mystery Project" that I cannot believe more people haven't talked about!
This mystery project is not the live action spin-off, not the play, and not the animated TV show!
"Josh: We know about the spin-off you guys are getting serious about...We know about the play... The animated show we already know about...
You've hinted at something else though...Is there another Stranger Things project that is yet unannounced? Is there something else cooking that we just don't know about?
Matt: Yes...
Ross: I don't know why you'd tease this. Uh yeah, there is there is something else though...
Matt: I don't want to be like "there's nothing else, when there is something else and it's super rad. It's not what people are probably going to think it is.
Josh: Is it a different medium? Are we talking about a video game?
Matt: No! No, it's not a video game! I wish it was a video game! No, no, I'm not, uh, I wish there was also a video game, let me rephrase, we've tried Josh, we've tried!
It's rad and it will be announced at some point..."
So oddly flustered about such an innocent question about video games... Interviewing famous Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima... Collaborating with Genki Kawamura who's currently adapting a video game into film format...The trademark for an interactive online TV series filed in 2019...New content that people may be surprised by...
I smell... I smell...
BANDERSNATCHGATE!!!
As a final send-off, I noticed something... odd... when watching some of the Exit 8 gameplays...
This hallway from Exit 8 looked oddly familiar...
I wonder where I've seen this before...
That's right - it's the hallway that leads directly to the Rainbow Room...
Remember this Season 4 poster?
Now look at the Exit 8 film poster...
Something is coming but we need to lock in and stop getting distracted by Noah's con comments, because he's distracting us from the real tea!
Bandersnatchgate is happening!!!
PS - @nightnut peep that Lynch reference at the beginning of the first clip! We're not crazy! Now, how do we get TwinPeaksGate to pop off...
PPS - the end is nearing my friends, the trolls have finally left their caves... keep an eye out....
