Vernon watches as you glance at the corner of the room, where he sits, almost as if you can see him. He watches as you reach to the floor pulling a t-shirt over your head and leave without another word to the room.
He can’t help but feel pride, like maybe you were finally learning, growing from your past broken promises.
Vernon flips the middle finger up at your boyfriend, smiling as Jeonghan flops on the bed in defeat. He follows you out of the room, sitting on the edge of the balcony as you suck in the fresh air, looking down at the quiet city below.
You hair was still cropped short, sitting just above your shoulders, a more natural deep brown colour, the locks knotted with sex. You run your finger through your hair, as best as you can anyway, letting out a quiet sigh as it gets stuck in one of the knots.
“Baby?” Jeonghan’s voice calls from inside, now wearing a hoodie and a pair of boxers, a jacket in hand for you.
Jeonghan wasn’t a bad guy.
He just couldn’t treat you the way Vernon knows you deserve.
“Sorry, I just got a bit overwhelmed.” You apologise, Jeonghan waving away your apology, quickly making his way out onto the balcony, slinging the jacket over your shoulders helping keep away some of the cold.
“You don’t have to apologise.” Jeonghan reassures, rubbing soft circles on your back. He presses a kiss into your hair, trying to guide you back inside, but you refuse, asking for a few more moments in the fresh air. “Okay, well come to bed soon.” Jeonghan says pressing one last kiss to your cheek, looking at you fondly before shuffling back inside.
Okay, maybe Jeonghan was a good guy.
Vernon rolls his eyes, crossing his legs as he watches you, watching other things. He rests his cheek in his palm, wishing just once you’d notice him there.
“Let’s make a promise.” You say out into the night, no one else to hear you.
Well, except Vernon.
“Let’s promise to only do things for us. We come first.” You continue, patting a affirming hand against your heart.
The promise lands in Vernon’s hands. It’s heavy, the ones made to yourself tend to be the heaviest. The hardest to keep.
Vernon looks down at the promise, they appeared differently to different keepers, yours were always a piece of scrap paper, the promise scrawled along the edges. Your handwriting on each of them, the earliest promises were mere scribbles in crayon.
Vernon tucks the promise in his pouch, smiling as he feels it sink to the bottom. It was a solid promise, one that would help you grow.
He loved those kind of promises.
You kept your promise. Your life progressed quickly, things with Jeonghan had continued smoothly, comfortably. You had both graduated, moved onto your blooming careers.
You moved in together, finding a newly renovated apartment in the middle of the city, close to both your workplaces.
Vernon watched you age, wondering what it would be like for him.
What career would he want?
Would he be in a relationship?
He never really got to indulge in those thoughts, they always ended the same. They always ended with your hands in his, the ultimate promise on the tip of your tongue, before reality came crashing back down, it could never be. He didn’t even really exist.
Not to you anyway.
The day finally came.
The day he had always dreaded. He got to see you in the aline white dress, the bodice made of sheer lace, the undertone a light lilac colour, your hair pinned away from your face, but sitting softly on your shoulders.
You looked beautiful.
The way he had always imagined you.
You were smiling. Beaming. Only it wasn’t at him.
Jeonghan returned your expression, neatly dressed in a tuxedo, a pretty diamond ring in his hand as he speaks his promise. Vernon can see his keeper, a man around his age, large brown eyes, the longest eyelashes he had ever seen, the keeper just smiled, looking at Jeonghan proudly.
It was your turn now, Jeonghan’s keeper turns towards Vernon, a look of pity on his face as Vernon feels his heart ripping out of his chest, the promise landing softly in his hands.
Huh.
It was light.
It was fragile. Vernon couldn’t help but wonder, would it break so easily? Surely not. He corrects himself as he gently tucks the promise into his pouch.
He was wrong of course.
The promise does break easily.
Eleven months later to be exact.
“Just leave him.” Vernon growls as he looks down at you. He had been pacing in front of your for an hour now, your hands firm on your growing stomach, the tears drying on your cheek.
He tries one more time, reaching to brush the falling tear from the corner of your eye, it doesn’t work of course, his hand nothing more than reflections of light.
“Please, he won’t change his mind, you need to leave him, keep her safe.” He begs, falling to his knees as he looks down at the soft swell of your belly.
You had found out your were pregnant twelve weeks ago, and every night ended the same.
Jeonghan wasn’t ready for kids.
“I still have my whole life ahead of me.” Jeonghan has justified as he handed you the pamphlets for the adoption centre.
You had cried yourself to sleep that night.
Things had gotten tense in the house, you mother had dropped by earlier today to take you to your first ultrasound, she had been exploding with excitement at the reveal of your babies gender.
A little girl.
You were going to have a daughter. Vernon was ecstatic.
He hoped she got your eyes.
“Remember your promise.” Vernon reminds you, hoping maybe just this once you would hear him, “do things for you.” He adds.
Vernon stumbles back as you jump off the mattress, stomping your way over to the closet, pulling out the largest suitcase in there.
You were doing it?
Had you heard him?
He watched as you spent the next two hours packing as much as you could, organising every left over, everything you would have to come back to collect. Vernon tenses as the front door swings open, your mother still jabbering on the other line of the phone as you zipped your suitcase closed.
“Angel?” Jeonghan’s voice questions as he walks into the bedroom, his eyes falling straight to the suitcase, Vernon smiling at the familiar determination on your face. The same look you had as you tried not to eat the cookie.
“I’m leaving, Han.” You say quickly. “You don’t want to do this with me, so I will do it on my own.” You spit out. You pull the suitcase off the bed, setting it on it’s wheels.
“You’re leaving me?” He questions slowly, his brain trying to process the situation.
“I can’t let her go, Han.” You whisper, stepping forwards to take his face in your hands. “I love you, but I can’t fathom the thought of not loving her.” You add, leaning forwards to press a short kiss to Jeonghan’s lips.
“You’re not ready for her and that’s okay. But I am.” You say one last time, before stepping away from him, pushing your suitcase down the hall.
“What about our promise to each other?” Jeonghan shouts.
Vernon scoffs rolling his eyes, silently willing you to continue to roll the suitcase down the hall, the familiar words ringing in his ears.
“Promises aren’t always meant to be kept.” You respond, not even turning to look back at your husband. Vernon feels the fragile vow of marriage rip in his pouch, he knows balance has been restored.
You get into the elevator, Vernon close behind.
“Thank you.” You whisper into the silence. “Whatever you are, thank you for reminding me.” You smile to yourself, Vernon’s hand grasping at his chest.

Summary: You don't feel alive unless you're crisping up on his backburner

Your finger hovers over the green button even before the second ring and you tell yourself to count to 12 before you let it make contact with the screen. The slight tremor in your hand is enough to remind yourself why you should have hit decline instead, but when his tired voice fills your ears, it hits you like air in your lungs and you wonder how you even live when he’s not there.
“Hey,” he says. He sounds sad, and the silence in the background instead of the usual overlapping chatter tells you he’s alone too. He must have snuck away to his studio to get away from everyone.
“Hey yourself,” you reply, trying to tone down your excitement. It had been weeks since Jihoon had last called you and you had missed him, to say the least. Every day the temptation to call him first, to text him first, grew harder and harder to resist. But you told yourself it was time to break yourself out of this perpetual cycle of being at the beck and call of someone who you would never be able to call yours. Did you ever actually break out of it?
If you did, you wouldn’t be here, sitting with your unfinished assignments scattered in front of you on your desk, lying that you have nothing to do so you could listen to him talk idly about a song he learned on his guitar by The Goo Goo Dolls and how he wanted to play it for this new girl he’s been seeing lately.
You roll your eyes and decide right then that The Goo Goo Dolls are dead to you. But you don’t say this out loud. Instead you say, “Oh she’ll love that. Anyone would be lucky to hear you sing that for them.”
And you wish he would tell you that you’re the only person he could ever dedicate a love song to. Instead he says “Right? I think she’s pretty into me already so this is just gonna seal the deal.”
You have nothing to say to that, but part of you is scared that enough silence might convince him to hang up the phone, and you aren’t sure you’d be able to go another 3 weeks without his voice. So you ask instead about the anime he started watching and it gets him going.
You don’t have a single clue what he’s talking about but you do know that when he says “I miss watching Naruto with you,” your heart skips and you feel the oh so familiar ache of missing him once again.
Maybe he’ll finally choose you after he’s had more time.
But maybe, you’ll settle for being the one he calls when the girls he loves become a song in his notes app about never being the one who’s chosen and you’ll do the same thing you do now – you’ll hate yourself for picking up his call but feel a twisted sense of pride when he tells you you’re the only person he would ever tell this to. He’ll tell you that there’s no one else like you and sometimes he might even tell you that he hopes your heart never breaks the way his does and he’ll never know that it already has.
He’ll call you and he’s crying, which he never does in front of anyone but you. He asks for advice and in a month you hear him sing your words on a song he wrote about another girl and you’ll remind yourself that he looks ugly when he cries. You’ll hate him for a week but then he calls again to invite you over and you’ll fight yourself all the way to the front door as you wear the perfume he likes and the shirt he once gave you and you’ll find yourself laying against his chest, his arm wrapped loosely around your waist and you’ll close your eyes and pretend that he called you here because he loves you and not just to feel the familiar warmth of a body next to his. While he’s asleep, you’ll let a tear slip out and tell yourself it’s the last time.
But when you wake up without him beside you the next morning and you see the burnt pancakes pushed to the back corner of his stove with a note that says “don’t eat these! They’re no good, be back soon :)” you remember where you exist in his heart and you wonder if he’ll forget about you the way he did the pancakes. But every time he’ll come back and you’ll let your own heart root for him just a little more.
He’ll be back. Jihoon always comes back.
You say it to yourself every time he leaves. Maybe that’s why you believe it now too. After weeks of radio silence, when you think he’s finally gone, and you can finally pull yourself away from his grasp to find someone who won’t love you part-time, his name will etch itself onto your phone and your heart once again.
Then you’ll find yourself here once again answering a siren’s call, and you’ll curtsy with a smile right as you walk off the plank.
Maybe he’ll choose you after he’s had more time.
The truth is you know he won’t. But whether it’s of free will or predestined, you know you’ll always find yourself on his back burner.
