Interesting …Do bees want to be in homes? Anyone know if this is okay?
People Are Installing Hives In Their Homes To Save The Bee Population
In 1947, there were six milllion hives, while today there are only two and a half million. Luckily, beekeepers have come up with an ingenious solution! BEEcosystem was founded by Dustin Betz and Mike Zaengle, with a mission of reconnecting consumers with the nature of food systems.
They brilliantly designed a cedar hive that can be installed right in your home. They are expandable too, so that as the colony grows, so can the hive. One of the coolest features is the glass panel that serves as a window, so you can watch these critters while they keep “buzzy” building their honeycombs.
Bees can enter and exit the hive via a plastic tube that funnels them outside. The tube fits into a space in your window, just like an AC unit.
Even though this program is very well thought out and has the potential to seriously increase the bee population, BEEcosystem does advise potential consumers that part of installing a system involves educating themselves and committing to properly maintaining the hives. Oh, and be sure to look into any beekeeping regulations in your municipality!
