tbh I can't stop thinking about how i went into Hadestown being like "this is a tragic love story based on a greek myth I enjoy :)" and I came out the other side covered in blood being like "this is a thesis about how capitalism inevitably leads to both personal and global ruin, and so we are duty bound to resist it even as we lose, again and again and again. no matter how impossible it feels or how many times we fail and hit a wall and fall, we try again"
Sorry I'm not over the framing of Hadestown as a cyclical story. This is an old, old song, but we're gonna sing it again. We've been singing it for hundreds, probably thousands of years. It is the oldest surviving opera, the second ever written. It is, I cannot express this enough, the most common opera adaptation of all time. As soon as this story existed we were putting it to music and on a stage. This is an old, old song. And we're gonna sing it again. Because we love to sing. And because we love.
SORRY for being crazy (but also not) but i love how eurydice being portrayed by a black actress gives a completely new layer to chant reprise (Hang a chain around her throat / Made of many karat gold / Shackle her from wrist to wrist… Bind her…) in playing opposite to a white orpheus, who is being told by the white capitalist hades… the layering of both misogyny and racism. of owning another person so completely. the misogynoir on complete display. the way jack wolfe plays orpheus as wholly disgusted at hades’ words. it’s the prison industrial complex. it’s the music and language already directly influenced by african american culture; the vernacular, the jazz, swing, working class people living under the thumb of a white person who gets rich off their labour. the environmental racism. euridicye can’t remember the last time she saw a flower. hades is destroying her home, polluting the air, digging up the earth until he literally buries her inside of it.
don’t get me started on persephone also being black. that’s a whole other thing i could go into.
Insane actually that until I saw Hadestown live I'd never heard anyone talk about the candle. The candle that is hope?? The candle that's THE LAST THING YOU SEE as the stage goes dark at the end of the show. The candle that the Fates blow out, that Eurydice relights at the start of every performance? Kept safe by Hermes until the story is told again? That candle???
Well personally I'M never going to stop thinking about it
hermes in hadestown is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. a tortured narrator. a little *too* reliable. incredibly aware of exactly what is happening at any given moment, vaguely spoiling it for you in the beginning, despairing every second of it. but ultimately motivated to continue to tell the story over and over and over with a smiling face for the sake of the audience, and for the sake of the characters themselves, singing it again to keep them alive. knowing how it will end, but singing it again so that the cycle may restart and eurydice may come back to life. enduring the misery of it all, over and over, holding the knowledge of what will come to pass but continuing anyway to see orpheus happy just one more time before it all goes down in flames again.
But we look back everyday- rechecking emails, making sure a friend is still behind you, checking to see if you remebered to pick up your keys. It's second nature, a habit of care.
It was second nature for him too. He looked back, not out of weakness, but love. For what is love, if not to look back?
Hades gives Orpheus a trial he knows he himself could never succeed at, but it isn’t just that Hades knows he would turn around. Hades has been failing this trial every single year. He shows up too early. He turns too soon. He is so full of doubt that even the natural order of the world, that Persephone will return to him, is not something he can trust. Hades would fail the trial he has given Orpheus, and he already has. All alone, his blood runs thin.
Admittedly, have not played the latest intervallo yet, so idk what's fully going on, but im so so sad about aeng du having bangs. How will LCD play tictactoe now :(((
i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! disect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!
