so,  i took a weekend –– and a few extra days –– off to go to NICE, to get away from my bullshit excuse of a life. and i return to this far inferior country with this question in mind: why do british girls have a huge stick up their ass, compared to french girls? or, maybe it’s just the girls i know, since my fake girlfriend –– the girl that i UNFORTUNATELY spend the most time with –– has a fuckin’ branch up there.

Evelyn’s brows arched at the guy’s response, hesitant to simply hand it over if one was unable to state directly whether it was theirs or not. “You have an ID or something in here?” She asked, placing her grocery bag on the sidewalk beside her. “I’d point out that the fact that someone else with an Italian wallet losing it around here is pretty rare but if you have more than one of these maybe that’s not so much the case,” the brunette chuckled.

Hugo raised one eyebrow, not expecting more than an exchange of the wallet and a quick thank you. “i don’t need to show you id,” he sputtered, crossing his arms in indignation. “you know what –– keep it. as i previously SAID, i have more than one of those. and there’s only a couple hundreds in there, anyways.”

“Do I need a reason to drink in an establishment for drinking? A drink which I still do not have, for some reason,” he scoffed, gesturing towards her working hands for effect. Even he realized he was being a bit harsh, but he wasn’t in the mood for an interrogation. That’s all he’d been getting for the last few weeks, after all.

“ that wasn’t a threat ! ” rosie couldn’t help but snap, seething. she forced her eyes closed for a moment, grounding herself before she had the chance to give him a monologue beginning and ending with how could yous. finally, she turned in her seat to face him, ONLY to make a show of how tired she was. “ i DO care about you. you’re my friend, hugo. i’m not going to do anything to make this situation any worse for you, no matter how majorly you’ve screwed me over. great effort on the apology, by the way, you fucking ASSHOLE. ” half joking into her glass, she finished her drink and set it aside, still entirely unimpressed in expression. “ …and there’s absolutely nothing riveting about this. so why don’t you pretend you actually care for a few hours, and leave me alone ? ”

hugo knitted his eyebrows, accompanying the action with an eye roll. “what? what do i need to apologize for? i’ve done nothing wrong. actually...” he trailed off, realizing last second that he’d done enough accusing. “thank you,” hugo breathed, “for not, you know. meddling,” hugo finished, the words struggling to come out. “leave you ALONE? no way. i don’t have anyone else to bother.”

“Hey, hold up,” Evelyn called out to a person ahead of her. She had just bought some groceries as she exited the store and saw what appeared to be a wallet lying on the sidewalk right in front of it. “Is this yours?” She asked, holding the item up to the other.

hugo took a moment before he turned around, out of focus. the grocery store situation was a little overwhelming him, since he only did it... well, never. he buttoned his black suit coat as he turned, squinting his eyes to look at the wallet. “hmm. hm. looks italian, so probably. i have a lot of those so i’m not exactly sure. thank you, though.”

each new conversation felix had with hugo had felix questioning how they had gotten to this point. not even an hour ago had felix wanted to practically rip hugo’s head off ( stated in the nicest way ), and now they were doing domestic things. like standing in a grocery store bickering. great. “ hugo, you realize i could probably get my own personal chef if i wanted ? i just don’t need everything done for me, unlike you. you’re like.. an adult baby. you might want to learn how to cook at some point in your life.” felix’s eyes roamed around the food stocked on the shelves, shrugging his shoulder. “i dunno. how about spaghetti ? i feel like that’s pretty simple. i can even teach you how, so many you can give your personal chef a day off and cook for yourself. ” felix started walking out of the aisle they were currently in, looking for the one where spaghetti would be. as he walked into the necessary aisle, felix turned to hugo. “ shit, you know what else we should make ? cookies. can’t have dinner without desert, can we ? ”

at this point, the weak insults rolled off of hugo’s back and he laughed them off, as he removed his suit jacket and slung it over his shoulder. “why would i ever need to learn how to cook?” he wrinkled his nose, shaking his head. “that’s what the chef is FOR. duh. and if i ate spaghetti every day, i would get fat, and we CANNOT have that. fortune 500 and all that. and maybe you’re superficial and you’ll stop being in love with me if that happens. and then i’ll just SPIRAL.” he followed felix around the store leisurely, since he’d decided that the wine here probably tasted like goat piss and he should probably stick to his personal collection. “cookies?” he glanced at felix skeptically, brushing hair out of his line of sight. “an oven? you’re gonna have to lead on that. can we go yet? this is taking forever.” hugo checked his rolex: it’d only been ten minutes.

rosie let a short laugh escape her, dark and exasperated, keeping her back turned to hugo. “ tell them to relax. as if things could get any worse. ” she bit back, though her defiance was all just an effort to make everyone else suffer her stress. of course, EVENTUALLY she would do whatever she was told. not that she really had to be told, anyway, a part of her being anxious for hugo long before the drama even solidified. “ SURE, and if you get sent to prison, do i get to go on a fucking vacation by myself ? or should i just wait for your release ? ” tightening her hold on her drink and pressing two fingers of her free hand to her temple, rosie released a long and frustrated sigh. this was just one of many opportunities she had recently received to go in on one of her exaggerated tantrums, but she continued to assume that bit would be wasted on hugo. instead, she gave him a brief and bitter look over her shoulder. “ please, i’ve done my bit by not airing all your dirty laundry in a prime time interview. if that’s not LOVE, then i don’t know what is. try floyd. i’m sure i’ll be busy. ”

hugo blinked for a moment at rosie’s reply, a little stung at the lack of doting care in her voice. he expected everyone he knew to pour all their energy and love into him, but –– of course, instead rosie had basically asked him to use his private jet. “and miss the most riveting trial since oj? absolutely NOT,” he scoffed. “you don’t even know one eighth of my dirty laundry so don’t even think about insinuating a hint of a threat, mon amour.” he crossed his leg, raising a singular eyebrow at her withering glare. “and by the way, things could get SIGNIFICANTLY worse, rosie. i’m serious.”
