I feel like what a lot of people somehow miss in alien stage is that the tragedy isn't the deaths (I mean, that too though) but that all of these relationships are so incredibly fucked up and toxic but... They didn't have to be. The whole point is that their horrifically abusive environment and dehumanization leaks out sideways, and destroys their human connections. We are constantly shown glimpses of a world where things could have been different. Especially in Wiege, but also in so much of the bonus content. Whether it's the modern AU, the actor AU, or just some of the more lighthearted content in general (the famous beach comic too, all examples of what Should have been). Their relationships being toxic is the point, but beyond that is that they didn't have to be. They shouldn't have been. It should have been different, they should have been happy. I think Mizi was right to blow it the fuck up. People calling her an evil abuser for finally seeing her toxic traits are missing the point. The toxic abuser is alien stage itself
something i find very obnoxious in fiction is when a story presents us with a society of structural misogyny and decides it wants to deal with misogyny within its text but can't commit to exploring the precarity of heterosexual relationships within that system. so you end up with these relationships where these feminist or proto-feminist women end up happily ensconced within the heterosexual marriage and its like fine and they don't have any complicated feelings about it bc their husbands like them and are nice guys. which like. does nothing to counter the insane societal issues faced by these women and also insultingly implies that happiness and self-actualization can only be found for these women within the safe harbor created by a graciously tolerant man. this post is about bridgerton and also jujutsu kaisen fanfic.

I do not have the time or the energy to go into this with the appropriate amount of detail, but the tl;dr is that I am a person who studies romance novels both academically and professionally (meaning I get paid to do it) and this very issue is one of the central sites of conflict and debate in the field and the genre.
The thing to remember is that A Romance Arc especially within a romance genre text (so a romance novel, a romantic comedy film, a dating simulator) serves multiple functions and is directed at a specific audience. Something I have to point out to people quite a lot is that the majority of people reading and writing popular romance novels are women who are (perhaps not exclusively) attracted to men, and they come to the genre wanting to indulge in that attraction. Of course romance heroes are all amazing in bed! Of course they're all unrealistically hot! This is a fantasy!
I really recommend Catherine Roach's writing on "getting a good man to love" and the idea of the Happily Ever After. I think her hypothesis makes a lot of sense: the women who watch Bridgerton live in a patriarchal society which enforces restrictions upon them, but they are also attracted to men. In the context of the popular romance, finding a man who loves you and treats you well and whom you can trust to not exploit his structural power over you means you've won. Roach writes about restorative readings and the fantasy of "having it all" within a frame of reference that feels realistic; I, an accountant from Ohio, cannot defeat the patriarchy, but this romance heroine can find happiness by being so darn amazing that this powerful man with all the advantages on his side that he will do absolutely anything to make her happy. That's a really compelling fantasy!
On the other hand, heteronormativity is so strong that you end up with female protagonists who absolutely would not find this fantasy appealing but who are pushed into it anyway by the sheer force of the genre convention. One of my most common complaints of romances I otherwise enjoy is that they shy away from actually meaningful critique and don't properly explore the implications and consequences of the traditional HEA. I personally love historical romance and I don't need every histrom to also Do A Feminism, but if you're going to bring up the structural misogyny of Regency society, don't just gloss over it! Address the problem! Use your imagination and come up with alternative markers of happiness to satisfy that emotional need while not sacrificing women's autonomy!
