—does it matter where we go?
"But in this world, I have found a home. Eren, as long as you’re with me, I can do anything.”
I’m slippin’ off the edge; I’m hanging by a thread. I wanna start this over again. So I try to hold Onto a time when Nothing mattered.
Annie hated mornings but if she wanted use of the bathroom before Christa got in there then she had to be up early. Her younger sister was the devil first thing in the mornings and she would rather avoid wanting to kill the little shit before breakfast… Their father, Erwin Smith would not approve of that. speaking of which, Christa was pretty quiet this morning… With a mug of coffee in hand, the blonde trailed upstairs only to catch a tail end of a a screech and a door slamming.
The door happening to be the bathroom door and Christa the owner of the noise. Annie just watched the interaction from the top of the stairs whilst leaning against the bannister as a loud, “Occupied!” filled the air causing her to snort.
"You’ll be waiting there a while…" She informed Eren with a rather blank expression though it wasn’t quite obvious if it was from the early morning or her usual stoic nature.
ℰ
An apology left Eren's lips, slightly glad that he hadn't just burst into the bathroom. Before he closed the door, he noticed Annie standing back and watching the scene transpire. His eyes moved to her own-- bored, like always-- then moved to the cup of coffee in her hands. "Good thing there's coffee, then." He smiled slightly, though he wasn't exactly friendly with Annie. In fact, they hadn't talk often. She was just his best friend's sister, and he was just her brother's best friend. It was always a strange relationship, he felt.
Apparently, Armin had just went right back to sleep when Eren had nudged him. It wasn't surprising as the blonde boy seemed to sleep forever when he had nothing better to do. Eren brushed past Annie as he made his way downstairs, not bothering to talk to her after awkwardly bringing up the coffee. He had just almost witnessed her sister naked firsthand, and that had only just hit him seconds before he started walking down the stairs.
The smell of coffee filled his nostrils, causing him to smile slightly as he walked into the kitchen. Eren treated this house like his own, walking around as if he were in the family, and that's exactly how Erwin seemed to like it. Besides, he happened to be here more often then not.
ℰ
Footsteps were heard in the hallway as Eren woke from his slumber. Armin's house seemed to be his second home, and he figured that Annie was the one making all the noise at nine in the morning. He had figured her to be a late sleeper like her brother, but she must have been the one to wake him up everyday for school. "Wake up," he said groggily before hitting Armin in the shoulder. Eren, somehow, had ended up on the floor with just a blanket covering his legs. The white t-shirt fit loosely around his skinny body as he stood, fixing his boxers as he made his way out of the room, planning on getting first to the bathroom.
A fist came down on the wooden door that blocked him from entering the bathroom. "Anyone in there?" He shouted before turned the knob and leaning in, hoping that he wasn't going to get a peak of Armin's dad. That would be both awkward and beyond disturbing.

If she couldn’t say anything to prove to him that he was human, then she would have to prove it through her actions. Tears formed in her eyes again, dripping from her lashes as she glanced down. No, he was human and she knew he was human, despite the stupid nightmares that haunted her mind at night. “I wouldn’t have come to you with them if I thought you were a monster, either. I come to you with them because I know that form isn’t the real you, that you’re still human and you always will be human." A mere mumble, but the honest truth. The raven had never thought of him as a monster, only been afraid. She was scared of him losing himself again, of being left behind and every time the conversation before they had to go to bed, it was always about ‘humanity’s last hope’. Screw humanity’s last hope, he was human and he would always be human. He was only a boy that had to carry a burden and she was only a girl that was just scared for him, worried about him and only ever wanted to be by his side.
”Monsters can’t feel love and compassion,” a tug on the scarf, “monsters can’t cry,” and she wipes away his tears, “and monsters, they don’t have hearts that they can use." She takes his calloused hand in her own, lacing her fingers through it and placing it on his chest to feel the steady thump of his beating heart beneath his clothes and protected by his ribcage. She had talked about this with Levi, it wasn’t something she could say to prove to him that he was human but she had to do something and she was trying; trying to prove it to him as best she could. She wasn’t sure when she ended up so close to him, sitting on top of his legs, forehead resting against his, a pale hand cupping a side of his face as the other was still resting against where his heart was.
”Don’t tell me you aren’t using yours, because I know you," she whispers it, her voice lowering as it breaks slightly. She wonders; does he remember any of the times he protected her, too? He hurt her, once and that’s all it was, one time. Does he remember punching that titan and then stomping on it, protecting her in the process? Does he remember shielding her and Armin from the cannon fire? Does he remember punching a fourteen to fifteen meter class titan in his human form to protect her? "And your heart doesn’t give up for anything.”

Green hues met charcoal orbs. Eren felt hopeless. Mikasa was afraid of him. The one person that he had always tried to protect was now afraid of him because of this curse. The curse was something he hardly even knew about, for one, and that drove him mad. This curse that was standing between them didn't even have a face. Eren was the only shifter that had tried to help humanity. Annie, Ymir, Bertholdt, Reiner; they had all tried to destroy humanity, one way or another. Eren wasn't a monster like them, but why did he have to take their form? Why did the world have to be so cruel to give him this curse that no longer protected the people he loved?
His eyes moved away from her own as the silence was deafening. Mikasa had nightmares about Eren. She was afraid of him, afraid of what he had become, and Eren wasn't sure how to take it. Either way, it wasn't going to be good. His heart had sunk into his stomach when he realized that she felt like that. Mikasa was the stronger person Eren had ever known, yet he had somehow broke down that wall of security to have fear strike her heart. Maybe Eren couldn't remember a whole lot in his titan form because he didn't want to. Attacking Mikasa was too much for him to bear, so he had forced it out. Speculation was all he had left.
Then she began to speak. Mikasa began to speak words of wisdom. Though she wasn't necessarily whispering, he felt as if the room had dimmed and her words were all he had left. His heart pounded in his chest when she pressed both of their hands against it. He had a heartbeat. It was something he could have checked long ago, but he had forgotten that a heartbeat meant warmth and life. No monster had a heartbeat. He blinked away the tears that had built up in his eyes. Monsters didn't have emotions, so they never cried. Her words took him back to the day he had told her how he felt. Monsters couldn't feel love or compassion for another, yet Eren had love and compassion for Mikasa.
"I'm human." Eren said under his breath, realizing that this was fact. He didn't say it out loud for Mikasa to hear, but he said it for himself. "I'm not a monster," he said with a small smile, looking at his hands through the darkness. "I'm human." Suddenly, things seemed to be clearer. Eren loved Mikasa, and he also loved his comrades and friends. Eren cried more than anyone he knew, which meant he had emotions. This titan shifting ability was no longer a curse to him. It was, in fact, humanity's last hope, for the moment. This ability was a gift that he would no let go to waste.

Mikasa held tight to his hand, finding it unnecessary to speak and uncaring that he took the bread that got her in this situation away. She did nod to his words, even if Eren couldn’t see it. Quietly, she hoped Armin was far away. If these men were after what she thought, their blond friend could be mistaken as a girl.
He was working a job today though, wasn’t he? Mikasa now hoped they kept him late.
Her feet were quick to stay close to him, the child panting heavily and swallowing between gasps. She had been tired from her morning work in some fields, this wasn’t what she needed. If these men were just a little younger, she wouldn’t be concerned about just fighting them off.
As it stood, her better option was to run. People merely watched until she reached Eren. Maybe they assumed she was stealing and about to be rightfully
The fact that no one had helped either of them, despite them running past with three grown men behind, told a story. It told Eren that the world was a cruel place, like he had found out all those weeks ago, and that even in the darkest times only he could save himself. Now, he had someone to look out for. Instead of worrying about Armin, he worried about Mikasa-- the only family he had left. He was slowly erasing that image, his drive to kill all of the titans taking over his entire being, but, for now, he felt as if he were her big brother. Eren planned on protecting her, just like he did after the death of her parents.
Footsteps grew louder as he came to, realizing where they were heading. The middle of town would help them immensely. There were so many people crowded around the markets that the men wouldn't be able to keep up with the children. It was obvious that they were trying their very best now that they realized there were two of them, but their youth seemed to drown them out.
A breath caught in the back of the throat, almost immediately causing for him to lose it. His lungs were beginning to burn, oxygen hardly getting to his brain, as they ran through the interior. Eren wanted to ask her if she had a plan, but he didn't want to be the weak one. He wanted to be the leader of the two, the one that knew exactly what was about to happen, even if he had no idea what they were going to do.
There wasn't much that Eren could do. He was a boy, yes, but he wasn't strong yet. Mikasa was stronger than him, and if she ran then he should too. There was no way both of them could take on two grown men with arms bigger than both of their heads combined. Unspeakable actions had already been forced into the child's mind, remembering those few days after the migration that left people in ruin. Children were kidnapped, and the alleyways were no longer safe. The Military Police had cleared a few things up, but it was still bad.

"Somebody’s…chasing…somebody…" Mikasa panted unhelpfully. The somebody was more like somebodies. She clutched the bread a little tighter. She hadn’t stolen it, it was given to her under the pretense of being an innocuous gift. She wanted to share it with the boys, so Mikasa didn’t eat it right away…
However, the man that gave it to her followed the child. When her pace increased and she looked back, there was more than one man. At this point she ran. At this point, she wondered if the bread hadn’t been tampered with, it was a bit stale.
"…somebody…we need to go."
Eren looked up at Mikasa, confused, before he looked down the alleyway. There were four men that appeared to have been chasing her. They looked at him, sizing him up, before looking back at the girl before him. They didn't take much interest in him, so he began to understand what was happening. Before he could really think, he jumped up and took the bread from her hands. If he needed to distract them, he would use that.
Calloused fingers grabbed Mikasa's hand, walking backwards before turning around to run. They weren't all that close as Mikasa was too fast for them, but they were most likely going to chase them down until they got what they wanted. Eren would fight until his dying breath to protect Mikasa, to save her, just like he had all those nights ago with her parents and those animals that somehow took the appearance of men. "Don't look back," he told her as they ran down the rest of the alleyway, remembering the sharp turns and dead ends as they moved forward. "We'll be fine. Just keep running."
Vengeance will be mine.

It took a good deal of self-restraint to keep the smug grin from her face. Instead she settled for a shrug. ❝Making sure you didn’t sell me out for brownie points.❞ She glanced around before kneeling to untie her shoelaces. ❝I’m surprised your babysitter didn’t follow you here. Does Ackerman know you’re out after dark?❞
Annie couldn’t help but notice the three from Shinganshina were nigh inseparable. Especially Mikasa and Eren. Word in the girls’ cabins was that Mikasa would follow him into the Survey Corps despite being the highest-performing trainee in their squad. Annie had scoffed with the rest of them but kept her true feelings hidden. With the 104th’s golden girl at a safe distance from Wall Sina, Annie would be able to infiltrate the Military Police with relative ease, existing just under the noses of the drunken fools she’d be joining.
A part of him felt the need to protect Mikasa, to stand up for her even though she wasn't here, but he didn't. Annie almost seemed as if she were scared of the raven-haired girl, but even Eren knew it was silly to think that the pale blonde was afraid of anything at all. "Do you think I'm a snitch?" He growled under his breath, staring at her through the dark. The moonlight seemed to hit her perfectly, showing only half of her face as her dark eyes seemed to pierce his own. If it wasn't for the look she always had on her face, Eren might have even called her likable.
Teeth found his bottom lip as he tugged on it, wondering why she thought he always had to have Mikasa with him. "Nobody is coming, trust me." Considering they would most likely be working together sometime, he needed to know that she trusted him. They weren't going to be outside of the walls anytime soon, or facing any real danger, but Eren wanted to know that when shit hit the fan Annie would keep a steady head, just like she always seemed to do, and have his back. "Can we just get to the moves?"

It had been a few weeks since the migration of humanity. Moving into the inside walls was easy, but keeping everyone fed and under control seemed to be something the government couldn't handle. People were out of jobs and their homes, and many were starved as they were too old to work or too young to join the military. Eren, of course, planned on going into the Survey Corps, but he had no current idea of what Mikasa or Armin were hoping to do. Armin was smart and would most likely become an author of sorts, or an adventurer. Mikasa was strong, so he figured she would join the Military Police Brigade. There was no doubt that she would be top of the class.
Footsteps came up on him, fast, as he rested his head in his hands, trying to catch a few minutes of sleep before their next job. A hand snatched away one of his arms, causing him to jerk awake and look up at the young and beautiful Mikasa. "What is it?" He asked as she seemed to be panting, a loaf of bread in her hand. Did she steal that? He asked himself, looking from the bread to Mikasa. It wasn't that he was angry with her, but if she had stolen something then they needed to run.
